Instructions:
1. This paper consists of section A, B and C with total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer ALL question in Section A and B, and two (2) questions from Section C.
3. Section A Carries sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty four (54) marks and Section C
thirty (30) marks.
4. Mathematical table and non-programmable calculator are allowed.
5. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the examination
room.
6. Write your Examination number on every page of your answer booklet(s).
7. You may use the following constants

SECTION A (16 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section
1. For each of the following items (i) – (x) choose the correct answer from the given alternatives and
write its letter beside the item number in the answer booklet provided.

3. a) A swimming pool appear to be 1.5m deep. If the refractive index of water is 4/3. Determine the
real depth of the pool and give the comments on the real depth you obtained and the appearance of
the depth of the swimming pool. (3 Marks)
b) a compound microscope has an objective lens of focal length 2cm and eyepiece of focal length
6cm. An object is placed 2.4cm from the objective lens. If the distance of the objective lens and
eyepiece lens is 17cm. Find
(i) The distance of the final image from the eyepiece lens (3 Marks)
(ii) The liner magnification (3 Marks)
4. (a) The sinking of the wheels of a Lorry into a soft sand may be prevented by letting off some air
from the tires. Explain this observation. (4 Marks)
(b) A uniform half-metre rule is freely pivoted at the 15cm mark and balances horizontally when the
body mass 60kg is hung at the 10cm mark. Calculate the mass of the half metre rule (5 Marks)
5. (a) Briefly explain why while catching a ball a goalkeeper extends his hands forward? (3 Marks)
(b) A 4kg ball travelling at 6mls to the right collides head on with 6kg ball travelling at 4mls to the
left. If the collision is perfect elastic. What are the velocities of two balls after collision?
(6 Marks)
6. (a) Suppose you are assigned to design a thermos flask. Explain how you will minimize heat loss by
conduction, convection and radiation? (3 Marks)
(b) 45g of water at 500C in a beaker is cooled when 50g of copper at 180C is added to it. The
contents are stirred until a final constant temperature is reached. Calculate the final temperature.
The specific heat capacity of cooper is 0.39 Jg-1 k-1 and that of water is
4.2 Jg-1 k-1. State the assumptions used. (6 Marks)
7. (a) A rectangular box of mass 10,000g rest on an inclined plane. If the co-efficient of static friction is
0.55 and co-efficient of kinetic friction is 0.25
(i) At what angle will the box begin to slide? (3 Marks)
(ii) If the plane is kept that angle after the box begins to slide, what will be the acceleration of the
box (3 Marks)
(b) A pulley system is made up of 8 pulleys. An effort of 200N is applied on the pulley system. If
the pulley system has efficiency of 80%, what is the maximum load that can be raised by the
effort applied? (3 Marks)
8. (a) Regardless of a lot of sustainable energy we have in Tanzania still the Government opt to
construct Mwalimu Nyerere hydroelectric power plant as one of the sustainable energy sources. Give
four (4) reasons for this option. (4 Marks)

(b) An increase in temperature to the environment has become a global problem. Analyses five
solutions to this problem. (5 Marks).
SECTIONS C (30 Marks)

9. (a) Why do recording studios and concert auditorism sometimes have their ceilings and wall covered
with soft perforated board? (4 Marks)
(b) The frequency of 3rd overtone (4th harmonic) produced by an open pipe is 840HZ. Given that the
velocity of sound in air is 330mls, Calculate;
i. The length of the pipe (3 Marks)
ii. Fundamental frequency (3 Marks)
(c) String A is 2m long and has a linear density of 9g/cm. string B has linear mass density of 18g/cm.
If the tension in both string is the same. How long must string B for it to be at resonance with
string A? (5 Marks).
10. (a) With the aid of labeled diagram describe the penetration abilities for beta, gamma and Alpha
radiations (5 Marks)
(b) A Physics teacher guided the students to draw an electrical circuit which has total resistance of 3Ω
unfortunately, in the school laboratory there were those three (3) resistors of 2Ω each. Explain how
will a student form a desired resistance and draw its circuit (4 Marks)?
(c) A battery of unknown e.m.f, E and Internal resistance, r is connected in series with an ammeter
and the variable resistor R. The current in the circuit is found to be 2.0A when the Value of R is
0Ω and 1.5A when the value of R is 0.6Ω. Determine the value of E and r (6 Marks)
11. (a) Briefly explain, how does an alternating current generator (A.C) produce electricity? (4 Marks)
(b) A 240V main transformer has 1000turns in its primary coil and it is designed to supply
electrical energy to 12V, 24W lamp. Determine the efficiency of the transformer if the current
drawn from 240V main is 0.125A. Explain by reasons why the efficiency of transformer is
always less than 100%? (6 Marks)
(c) The diagram below shows a circuit with two diodes D1 and D2, two lamps L1 and L2 and
battery. State and explain the observation that would be made when switch S is closed. (5 Marks)
