Problem Set No.2

The document is a problem set for a hydraulics course, detailing various fluid mechanics problems related to flow rates, discharge calculations, and measurements using devices like Venturi meters and weirs. It includes specific scenarios involving water and oil flow through pipes and orifices, requiring calculations based on given parameters. The problems are designed for students in the Civil Engineering Department for the academic year 2023-2024.

Problem Set No.2

1. Water is being discharged through a 150-mm-diameter pipe directly into a container that has a
volume of 6 m³. Find the velocity of flow through the pipe if the time required to fill the container
is minutes and 28.7 seconds.

2. Calculate the discharge through the submerged orifice shown in the figure.

3. The truncated once shown has 𝜃 = 60°. How long does it take to draw the liquid surface down
from h=5m to h=2m?

4. What length of a Cipolletti weir should be constructed in order that the head of flow will be 0.96
m when the flow rate is 3.76 m³/s?

5. Oil s flowing upward through a Venturi meter as shown. Assuming discharge coefficient of
0.984, calculate the flow of oil.

6. A Venturi meter having a throat diameter of 150 mm is installed in a horizontal 300-mm-

diameter water main, as shown. The coefficient of discharge is 0.982. Determine the difference
in level of the mercury columns of the differential manometer attached to the Venturi meter if the
discharge is 142 L/s.
7. Determine the head on a 45° V-notch weir for a discharge of 200 L/s. Use C=0.57.

8. For the sluice gate shown, if Cv=0.98, what is the flow rate? If Cc=0.62, what is the height of the
opening?
