1 Deployment topology
Overview
Two main packages should be distinguished in your Sercel e-product
software:
• Server software: typically to be installed in the recording cab.
• Client software: processing and graphic user interface software that
can be installed in the recording cab or on remote computers.
Remote users can access the server through an Intranet or Internet
connection. Access via the Internet or Intranet requires the installation
of an additional computer (referred to as Seismic Gateway).
There are four different ways of implementing your Sercel software:
• Local user topology (page 11).
• Intranet user topology (page 12).
• Internet user topology (page 13).
• Intranet/Internet user topology (page 14).

Overview
SERCEL supplies the necessary administration software for the
Gateway computer. Depending on which topology is used, a Seismic
Gateway may be required for interfacing with an Intranet (Figure 1-2),
or with the Internet (Figure 1-3), or with the Firewall in a contractor’s
DMZ (Figure 1-4).
• On an Intranet: the Gateway computer is used as a gateway and
router between the seismic recording system’s local network and the
contractor’s private network.
• On the Internet: the Gateway computer is used as a gateway and
firewall between the seismic recording system’s local network and
the Internet.
• In a contractor’s DMZ: the Gateway computer is used to route the
HTTP packets to another Seismic Gateway within the contractor’s
Intranet.
The Seismic Gateway may provide the following services:
• Administration of Proxies: one Proxy for each Sercel product or one
Proxy for each each seismic crew (SADMPXY software).
• Firewall or routing management (SADMFW software).
• Inmarsat satellite interfacing:
- SADMBGAN software for BGAN Inmarsat terminal;
- SADMRBGAN software for RBGAN Inmarsat terminal.
Install sadmbgan_v_v_0.i386.rpm
(if using Inmarsat BGAN)
No Yes No
or sadmrbgan_v_v_0.i386.rpm
(if using Inmarsat RBGAN)
Note: The firewall and the mail service are provided by the geophysical
contractor’s software if installed in the DMZ (for an Intranet user
topology) or by Sercel software if installed in the recording cab (for an
Internet user topology).
The following is required for the Gateway:
• A standard PC, as specified by SERCEL, equipped with two Ethernet
cards.
• Two Ethernet cables.
• SERCEL software package CD-ROM.
• Linux Workstation V4.0 Update 4 CD-ROMs for a Dell 745, or
Update 6 for a Dell 755.

Uninstalling SADMPXY
If you need to uninstall SADMPXY (e. g. prior to re-installing the Web
server), SADMFW and SADMBGAN (if present) must be uninstalled
first. To uninstall SADMPXY, do the following:
- Log in as root.
- Open a Terminal window (click on the red hat, select System
Tools then Terminal).
- Type the command: rpm -e sadmpxy
Reinstalling SADMPXY
If you need to reinstall SADMPXY, first uninstall it (see above). This
automatically saves parameters which are recovered when you reinstall
it.
Uninstalling SADMFW
If you need to uninstall SADMFW, do the following:
- Log in as root.
- Open a Terminal window (click on the red hat, select System
Tools then Terminal).
- Type the command: rpm -e sadmfw
Reinstalling SADMFW
If you need to reinstall SADMFW, first uninstall it (see above). This
automatically saves parameters which are recovered when you reinstall
it.

IMPORTANT
Because the Seismic Gateway computer is configured to get its IP
address from DHCP, you have to power on the satellite terminal first.

3. The terminal automatically tries to get a GPS fix from its built-in
receiver every time it is powered on. You may wait until a GPS fix
is available (see the manufacturer’s documentation), or choose
your nearest city by clicking on the map. The pointing wizard will
use your location to determine the recommended orientation of
the terminal towards the satellite.
4. Use the “Antenna Angle” and “Compass direction” displayed by
the pointing wizard to point the terminal’s antenna to the satellite.
Accurate and precise pointing is important, because a badly-
pointed antenna can reduce the data rate achievable over the
network.

Figure 2-13
Five types of data connections are available: one “standard” and four
dedicated “streaming” types.
• The Standard connection is charged per Mb (you are charged only
for the amount of data that is sent). The bandwidth you are allocated
depends on the type of terminal and on the number of users.
• A Streaming connection (32, 64, 128, 256 kps) is charged by time.
This type of connection enables data to be sent in a continuous data
stream, but you are charged for the amount of time the connection is
active. Typically, the 256 kps data rate is the most suitable for a
streaming connection.

Registering a crew
The network Administrator has to configure the connection to each
crew (after installing SADMPXY) only in the case of a gateway
machine in a contractor’s DMZ (see Figure 1-4 on page 14).
Configuring the connection to a crew consists in specifying the IP
address of the Seismic Gateway, in accordance with the contractor’s
Intranet address routing table, so it can be accessed on the private
network.
To register a crew, the Administrator must do the following:
1. Launch the Web browser (Mozilla).
2. Log on to the Intranet Web site hosted on the gateway machine
with the eth1 interface URL (http://IP). A Login name and
Password is required. By default, the Web site is configured with
the following:
- Login: proxy
- Password: administrator
(Note: once connected, you can use the Change Login menu to
change the Login and Password).
