UNIT PLAN
INTRODUCTION:
The Teacher has to recognize the content of the text book on the subject into suitable units.
Unit is developed psychologically in students as a mean of integration; unitary teaching
necessitates the interlocking of ideas in order to achieve full understanding. Usually after the
year plan should therefore be ready before once starts preparing unit plan. A teacher who is
experienced and competent enough in the subject matter should prepare the year plan,
keeping in mind the ins and outs of the units of subjects.
DEFINITION:
“Planning the unit is known as unit planning”.
A unit consists of a comprehensive series of related and meaningful activities to achieve the
purpose, educational objectives by providing significant educational experience that would
result in appropriate behavioral changes in the learners.
CRITERIA FOR A GOOD UNIT:
The needs, capabilities and interests of the students should be kept in view.
A variety of experience should be planned for better learning. Eg:- field trips,
experiments, demonstrations, projects etc.
The previous experience and background of the students should be taken in account.
The length of the student should be based on the interests of the students.
Provide an opportunity for new students.
Familiar and related topics should be included in the unit.
It should be related to social and physical environment of the students; help, anticipate
and satisfy some of the future needs of the students.
Unit should be a part of sequence that permits growth from year to year.
Unit planning should be the result of co-operative planning of teacher and students.
Signify the unity and wholeness of learning activities related to some problem or
project.
Psychological principle,' leaning by whole' is followed.
Importance has to be given to integrate learning outcomes.
Represents subject matter into units of experience.
Organizes similar types of subject matter.
It achieves asset of specifications and objectives.
Teacher should have thorough knowledge about subject content so that she can decide
the difficult units.
The availability of periods should be considered.
ESSENTIALS ACTIVITIES IN PLANNING A UNIT:
Common activities which are involved while planning and develop teaching-learning units.
Selection and statements of objectives: to bring desirable change in behavior which
are manifested result of specific teaching-learning activities.
Selection of content
The facts, concepts, principles, which are learned to objectives of the unit.
Information, generalizations, subject matter, which are organized into knowledge.
Sources for its knowledge component- textbooks, references, periodicals, journals.
Audio-visual aids.
Educational resource- study of a client at home, hospital or clinic or any
situations.
The content and learning experience for a unit vary according to the types of a
unit, objectives, the field of study. Primary emphasis in nursing course is planning
scientific principles along with the development of skills.
Pretest has to be administered to test the knowledge, understanding and skills in
the particular area
Study guide has to be prepared by the teacher in advance and give to the students
to work out earlier as its orients, reviews the topics related familiarizing the
student for the topic.
Distribution of time and the allotment of time.
Organization of the content of the unit to meet the desired objectives keeping in mind
the curriculum, policies, administrative pattern, subject matter or learning experiences
has to be organized for student development to produce a cumulative effect i.e.
accumulation of results of experience in a desirable manner. Reinforce in a manner to
create a broader and deeper understanding of knowledge skills basis and to develop,
refine and strengthen the skills already acquired.
Selection of teaching and learning activities.
Tracing out and utilization of available education resources and flexibility according
to the needs, providing opportunities for students to develop as a result of
participation in these activities.
Teachers expertise
The teacher should have the knowledge
Of the subject that she is teaching.
Teaching learning process.
Learners for whom she is planning the course.
Of the unit.
Her positive attitude towards teaching and her students together with her
experience in teaching.
Selection of methods of evaluation: to find out how effective the teaching learning
activities have been.
Selection of reference: reading of relevant books, articles, journals is necessary. The
school should have a good library equipped with journals, periodicals, books and
library reference materials which will aid in the teaching learning process.
TYPES OF UNIT PLANNING:
Carwell and Campbell (1985) classified the type of units into
Subject matter unit.
Topical unit.
Generalization unit
The unit based on significant aspect of environment or culture.
Experience unit
Unit based on centre of interest.
Unit based on student purpose.
Unit based on student need.
Resource unit.
SUBJECT MATTER UNITS:
An arrangement of materials and the conditions of learning planned and developed to result
in the desired products of learning. A body of subject matter, together with a group of
implementing activities with every item of which is focused on a central cluster of ideas. In
this unit students attain their wholeness of integration through learning activities. The sources
of units are outside of the learner. The primary goal of these unit is a phase of subject i.e.
aspect of the culture or a major division of subject. In subject matter unit, emphasis is placed
primarily on the things to be learned and secondarily consideration is given to that, unless
these things to be learned are understood by the learner, they will be litte value to the learner
EXPERIENCE UNIT:
It is the basis for the activity programmes emphasized in is placed on the learner needs,
interests or elementary grades. In these types of units primary emphasis purposes or on the
process thought involved. Secondary based on the student purpose unit i.e. it is based on a
series of activities which the learner carries out an order o achieve a given end objective,
Culmination occur when the learner achieves the purpose set up. It must be planned
continuously as it develops e.g.:- the nursing care plan. Experience unit is also based on
students unit of learning is based on needs which the student given to the material to be
learned. It is consideration is to recognize as essential activities and subject matter are
selected in relation to student needs. The unifying force is the student's requirements.
RESOURCE UNIT:
A compendium of suggested activities and materials accompanied by statements of
significance, scope, objectives, educational resource materials suggestions for everything
used by teachers in their preparation for student teacher unit planning. Resources units are
constructed by faculty groups.
CHARACTERISTICS OF UNIT PLAN:
Offers innumerable suggestions, but do not restrict they provide plenty of margin for
teacher in genuity.
Indicates the scope of the particular area of knowledge thereby helping the teacher to
view it as a whole.
Take into account the principle of individual differences by suggesting a wide variety
of activities geared to different levels of learning.
They are the work of a group of teachers representing the pooled resources and
strength of that group.
They contain an extensive annotated bibliography including books, pamphlets,
periodicals, community resources, audio material etc.
PURPOSES OF UNIT PLAN:
They can be used as basis for developing a teaching unit.
They provide for a type of in-service education for the teacher that construct and
implement them.
They key around work for good teaching and extensive preplanning which they entail.
They stimulate teacher activity by offering a variety of suggestions and materials.
They can be substituted for textbooks.
They are an excellent source of information for beginning teachers and point-out
where and procuring audio visual materials with which to enhance teaching and
learning
They help the teacher to assist students in setting definite attainable goals.
They emphasize evaluation and offer various approaches while planning a unit, the
following factors should be borne in mind.
Content analysis.
Objectives with specifications
Learning activities.
Testing procedures.
CONTENT ANALYSIS:
In unit planning emphasis is placed on analyzing its content into, terms, concepts, facts,
situations, processes, knowledge about the subject matter. It gives self confidence since she
has mastery over the subject matter. Missing of points will be avoided.
OBJECTIVES WITH SPECIFICATIONS:
The second step is to find out the objectives with specifications that can be realized through
the content analysis.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
Individual differences and psychology of the pupil will be considerable in choosing learning
activities.
TESTING PROCEDURES:
Types of evaluation, tools and techniques are mentioned through which the teacher would get
evidence of the achievements learning activities testing procedures of objectives on the part
of pupil.
FORMAT OF UNIT PLAN:
Subject: Year: Batch: Period:
CONTENT OBJECTIVES TEACHING EVULATION
ANALYSIS WITH LEARNING PROCEDURE
SPECIFICATION PROCESS
CONCLUSION:
In nursing education, optimum learning situations have to be provided. Inquiry and
discovery are needed. The elements of identification and levels are important in order to
create teacher-learner relationship. The various learning experiences during the course of
study with the program and over the time period will help him to perform tasks satisfactorily.
