ABSTRACT
The project involves the construction of a hand wash basin at Aldai Technical Training
Institute in Nandi County, the project is constructed by Emmanuel kimutai. Wash hand basin
is originated from Britain in 19th century and still play the most essential in maintaining
public hygiene.
Wash hand basin is a device constructed to provide a facility of wash hand facilities and other
equipment facilities, wash hand is an appliance that is fed by both hot and cold water system
where the hot water is to be supplied by immersion water cylinder and cold water system is to
be supplied with cold water storage cistern to wash hand.
The wash hand basin should discharge waste water through a grating, a trap and a branch
discharge pipe to discharge stack into galley or directly to septic system
The system is to be fed with two inlets, one that carries hot water and another that carries
cold water. The pillar tap that is fed by hot water has to be installed on right hand side and in
addition of red color on top of the valve button and that of cold water is to be installed on the
left hand side and has a blue color on the valve.
The wash hand basin is normally applied to be operated in public places like hospitals, towns,
learning institutions and domestic homes. The main objective of wash hand basin is
purposively meant to reduce the spread of infectious diseases such cholera and the system
should be available and assessable when in use.
Wash hand basin is cheaper to be installed and to maintain high standard of hygiene with
proper disposal of stagnated water

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
HAND WASH BASIN INSTALLATION
• Should you pass the hand wash basin to a third party, these installation instructions should
be handed over.
• As soon as you have unpacked the hand wash basin, check, whether everything is in a
faultless condition.
• Dispose the packing material according to the local regulations. All the packaging items
(plastic bags, cardboard, polystyrene foam, nails, etc..) should not be left within reach of
children, because they are potential sources of danger.
• The manufacturer/dealer cannot be made responsible for damages, which arise through not
observing these installation instructions.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Due to numerous infections caused by germs that are in soil and our hands, this call for the
installation of hand wash basin to maintain hygiene
OBJECTIVES
To reduce the spread of infectious diseases such cholera
To maintain good hygiene on institutions

CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
In Kenyan primary schools, improvements in wash reduced reinfection of some soil
transmitted helminths in primary school children after deworming though the magnitude of
effect may be sex specific (Freeman et al.). A review of published evidence from schools
worldwide showed that incorporating a WASH educational component in interventions was
very effective in improving absenteeism. The benefits of handwashing appeared more
pronounced in female students who had the highest absences rates and socioeconomic status
(SES) was an important barrier to access of handwashing materials (Joshi and Amadi).
Furthermore, providing sanitizer to Kenyan primary schools with limited access to water
improved hand cleansing after using the toilet among students and reduced rhinorrhea but had
no effect on diarrhea or respiratory prevalence (Pickering et al.) Appropriate handwashing
technology can be an important determinant of handwashing behavior. IBM-WASH
framework can be useful tool to guide evaluation and selection of handwashing technologies;
for example, in Bangladesh researchers found that low cost, durability, water storage
capacity, ease of use and maintenance and quality influenced which technologies respondents
preferred (Hulland et al.). In some places, such as Cambodia, there is a need and a potential
demand for dedicated handwashing stations. Such technology should improve convenience,
be low cost and functional with variable water availability (Jenkins et al.). Oregano
essential oil added to liquid detergent improved the soap’s antibacterial properties.
Researchers found it reduced aerobic bacteria on hands as well as commercial antibacterial
soap and was more effect than regular soap (Rhoades). n a cluster randomized trial, Freeman
and colleagues found children from 20 Kenyan government primary schools who received a
school-based water treatment, hygiene and sanitation program had 44% lower odds of
reinfection of Ascaris Lubricoides compared to children from 20 control schools. Girls from
intervention schools had lower odds of reinfection and lower egg count compared to girls
from control schools. There was no difference between boys. There was no significant effect
of the intervention on the reinfection of 3 other soil-transmitted helminths. (Freeman et al.
2013)

CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
INTRODUCTION
Installation
• The installation should be only installed by a qualified specialist according to the valid
standards.
• Remove all protection and packing materials.
• Check the hand wash basin for any damages. If something is damaged, inform your dealer.
Assembly of the hand wash basin
a) Install the siphon at the basin discharge.
b) Put the swan neck/water discharge into the hole, which is located above the right basin
edge.
c) Screw the flexible hose (under the basin edge) on the swan neck.
d) Fix the basin with the attached support and the screws in horizontal position on the wall
e) Pull the flexible hose over the crossbar in the forward position.
f) Screw the valve to the hose and consider the direction of the water flow. On the valve is for
this specially an arrow. If you do not consider it, the valve will not close correctly.
g) Lead the valve into the drilling, which is in the crossbar, and lock the valve with the lock
nut.
h) If you need the mixing valve for cold/warm water mixture, then turn the mixer on the
pressure control valve.
i) The delivery contains a liquid soap dispenser, which you can fasten by using the double-
sided adhesive, attached on the rear wall. Please clean the rear wall before, so that it is
completely grease-free.
j) The connection to the house water pipe and also the discharge should be installed by a
plumber.
3
Cleaning
• For hygienical reasons the hand wash basin should be cleaned daily
• Clean everything with a damp cloth and some commercial cleaning detergent. Afterwards
dry it carefully.
• You can clean the hand wash basin with a high-grade steel cleaner also. • Clean regularly
the siphon.

4.5 CONCLUSION
Through my piece of work practice, I have learnt that not only what have been taught in
class makes me to have experience but also more putting much efforts in practice into action
makes me to gain knowledge and skills therefore I have full faith that am able to work as a
plumber and compete with other plumbers in the field.
