CHAPTER THREE
Overall Experience
3.1 Overview Experience within and outside the Organization

I did my SIWES in LCI LEKKI COMPUTER INSTITUTE which I started early April after searching for IT placement
and submitting my letter in several Organizations. Getting into LCI, I was interviewed by the manager of the
Institute and was told to go home that I would be gotten back to , then I was called the next day and was told
I should start on the 09 April, 2018.

Resumed on that day I was told to come, I came as early as 8am and then was introduced to some members
of staff and other IT students already in the Organization, I was then told by Mr. Christopher that he was
going to be my Supervisor and was showed around was taken to some of the classes and later asked some
questions about my stay in school so far and about some things I have been thought so far.

I was introduced to Mr. Ali who was a programmer in Java was told I would be working with him for some
time he asked me to writes some programs which includes Fibonacci series in Java, and after the first week I
was then introduced to Mr. Ope who is a web designer I also worked for a week with him he thought me
basics of designing your own web site using WordPress, I leant how to create my own database with
WordPress using a local server, I also leant how to download any desired themes and install plugins, did this
for another one week then the third week I switched to Mr. Ola who is the graphics designer I started
graphics was really enjoying it he explained some of the tools in Corel draw X5 and their uses he continued
with the basics and a very simple logo design with time we advanced to editing of so many things an design
of so many flyers, school logos, business cards, and banners for clients and I was some time asked to teach
some students into to using Corel draw I then started using the latest version of Corel Draw I was also asked
around July to take some students computer science and English pass questions Before then I was instructed
by my supervisor to be taken MS Word and MS excel which I did as I was still learning graphics.

In summary my daily routine at LCI was

 Resumed by 8am
 Moring devotion by 9am after having gone through that’s day’s exercise to be thought on the
allocated packages.

10
 Teaching starts by 10am officially MS Excel
 Then graphics class with Mr. Ola till 3pm
 Evening classes
 Closed by 6pm

Listed above is my Monday to Friday routine on Saturdays since I was told it would be included in the days I
should be present to work I resume by 12pm on Saturdays and then do graphics I would be designing for a
client or would be given something to design by Mr. Ola or would be trying to replicate something online.

3.2 Knowledge and Skills Acquired

Before the commencement of my SIWES program I was familiar with some programming languages which
we had done in school. But was better and comfortable using C# but then can just create basic console
applications and also windows form application with C#. When I started the IT program though was given an
instructor to help me improve on my programming skills using Java but instead I grew interest for graphics
because I actually had never done graphics or been thought on how to design anything with the system or
any software so I he saw the interest and gave me tutorials to guide me and some PDF files to use as well.
Earlier on I was told to write a program in c# to compute the Fibonacci series which I was able to write:

11
Some of the skills I also acquired includes design Logos, flyers, business cards, banners, posters, and letter
head of all sorts etc. designs are shown in softcopy.
Graphics: the word graphics is derived from the word ‘graph’. Graph literally means a visual that is accurate
and proper by calculation.
Corel Draw: is a vector graphics editor developed and marketed by Corel Corporation. It is also the name
Corel’s Graphics Suite, which in class additionally the bitmap image editor Corel photo-paint as well other
graphic – related programs.

Basic terms in Corel Draw: Object, document, bitmap, fly out, Artistic texts

Object: this is an element in a document such as image, shape, line, text, curve, or symbol.
Documents: these are the works you can create in CorelDraw such as custom artwork, logos, posters,
newsletters (letter heads). Fly out: A button that opens a group of related tools or commands

12
Artistic text: A type of text to which you can apply special effects, such as perspective or drop shadows
Paragraph text: Text that flows in a text frame, which you can wrap around an object, artistic text, or a
paragraph texts.

And at this some extra skills like communication skills too how to converse better with clients also how to
work as a team with people being a good team player.
With all this for the first 2 weeks of graphics class I was able to design my very first flyer.
I did also learn how to teach making a group of people understand what you teaching and the idea you
trying to pass across, how to carry everyone in the class along and make sure nobody is left out or behind.

3.3 Observations and Contributions

All through my internship I was certain of getting myself f involved in any meeting that went on in LCI that
was for all staff not excluding the IT students and any interactive session which I made sure of being present
too and was also advised by my industrial based supervisor of being present in any of the meetings to know
how the meeting is being held and gain one or more thing from there.

Some of the meeting included us coming together to think of ideas in moving the school to the next phase,
we were also given the liberty of contributing or making suggestions for the Betterment and development of
the company, with this I observed how companies come together with one head and think to ensure the
continuous progress of an organization.

I really saw the team work of the organization to the extent the owner of the business Mr. Augustine Owere
did come and pray with us, spoke to us, encouraged us and also asked for everyone’s contribution to moving
the company forward me in one or two organizations suggested some idea which was appreciated.

I did also contribute by helping other staffs whose workloads are much I helped them in taking some of their
classes and also helped them in their offices as well.

13
3.4 Challenges encountered during the Exercise (SIWES)

One of the most grim and toughest challenges I faced was trying to balance my teaching time and to find
time for myself to learn and practice. Another problem was the internet connection although it use to be fast
sometimes but the class I was put in the connection was limited there and the last problem was the traffic
congestion from the home to my work place.

3.5 Suggestions to Challenges encountered

I had to think of a way of putting a balanced in my teaching and learning time so I shifted some of my classes
to when is convenient for me I ha d to discuss with the students to change the time for my classes. For the
internet not reaching where I stay I complained and I was moved.

Suggestion In respect to the traffic congestion I had to be waking up an hour earlier than before that was the
only possible solution

14
CHAPTER FOUR
Conclusion and Recommendations
4.1 Summary

The Industrial training experience at LCI was a productive and a fulfilling experience because it was what
while. It went on for the period of 6 months, of which I acquired so many skills and leant so many things.

As at this period I was able to work on my skills I was already developing in school that programming in Java
but left that for a while and picked interest in Graphics.

I did learn how to start and finish so many designs, Logos, Business cards, of all kinds I was also giving the
opportunity severally to follow to where the printing is done that’s the printing press seen how thy print it to
come out in the desired shapes and sizes.

I also leant the process in getting a deal with a client and helping the client with his or her design by advising
on the color combination or the entire look of the design to suit the purpose in which the design is for.

4.2 Relevance of Experience gained in connection with Classroom

Knowledge

Most of the activities I did during this period was practical of some of the things I learnt in school get your
hands dirty to get result no of the task being assigned to you.

I was able to blend the theoretical knowledge gotten from school at the beginning I was being thought a bit
of Artificial intelligence (AI) at the first week which I had a little knowledge of before I was given a proper
explanation of if which would be of great use to me in 400level and also after school, I was also instructed to
write several programs e.g. a program that can printout the Fibonacci series which from my knowledge from
the classroom I was able to write. By the second week that I moved to web design I was able to create my
own Database on WordPress and was given a practical explanation on how it really works.

4.3 Conclusion

Irrefutably Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is an important aspect and should be done
by all students who are required to go for it in all higher institution in Nigeria Universities Polytechnics etc. it
should be fully experienced by students and valued as well because one can never buy the experience gotten

15
from such Exercise. The exercise is known to fill the space between the theoretical aspect and the practical

16
Knowledge of students and also helping them to think beyond the four walls of school and having in mind
something to achieve out there in the competitive world and helping them facing it in the best possible way.

4.4 Recommendations on the Scheme

I commend that the program should be done by all schools because it goes a long way in helping the
students in many ways but can be organized in such a way that schools actually help to find placements for
students or assist them in getting placement in a suitable organization due to the time frame.

Also Industrial training fund (ITF) should pay the stipend to students account early enough this could be of
great use now.

17
Appendix
IMPORTANCE OF GRAPHICS
DESIGN
Graphics design plays an important role in today’s modern competitive global environment. The graphics
designing has become an integral part of any business and organization for any customized website cable of
providing all your needs the graphic arrangement on the website should be appropriate and should also look
attractive and adorable.

The graphic designing is important in every field that includes marketing, magazine layout etc.

A good graphics design should effectively communicate the message of the sender to the targeted audience
using tool of visual communication.

Well-designed pieces of graphic design enable its creator to boost up sales establishing its name and earning
goodwill in the market and thereby maximizing the profitable base of the business.

A well-crafted design of graphics seeks to attract the attention of a large a large amount of people. Without a
good design the company may not be able to highlight its product and increase its customers or clients base
on the site which ultimately affects the business and profitability of the company.
