F
eaturing rich and vivid shades of
orange, yellow and red – with more
than a hint of old-school glamour –
the current trend for sunset themed interiors
has us dreaming of the LA skyline. The
choice of colour palette is what makes this
trend sing. And the high street is currently
teeming with homeware and accessories
in all shades of the sunset spectrum: from
tangy ochre and orange, to peachy coral and
moody rust. We’ve played on this trend’s
namesake by pairing these rich, sunset
hues with a touch of 1970s retro charm.
We’re talking luxe fabrics such as velvet
and corduroy; shimmering hints of brass
and copper; and classic vintage-inspired
furniture and accessories.

WHO LIVES HERE? I’m Sarah

Brooks, 43, and I’m an Instagram

and interior stylist. I live with my two
children, Charlie, 15, and Daisy, 13,
and our dog Betsy. My home is a
four-bedroom Edwardian semi by the
coast on the Wirral Peninsula.

WHAT WAS UPDATED? I created

a fully functioning outdoor room,
including a stove, sofa and dining
table, and kitchen dresser.

WHY THE CHANGE? The garden

was overgrown and had a ramshackle
shed that was falling down. Both were
unsightly and not making the most of
the large outside space.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE? After

waiting six weeks for the concrete base
to set, the structure only took a couple
of days to put up, although painting
the wood took forever.

First, though, she needed to consider the night
base. ‘I wanted flooring that would stand the
test of time, but composite decking is very
expensive and I didn’t want to have to re-stain
wooden decking every few years, so I decided
to have a concrete base laid instead,’ she says.
‘The concrete won’t subside or crack and the
low-maintenance porcelain tiles I put on top
should last for years, and can be brushed and
mopped clean.’ To keep costs down, Sarah
went for a flat-pack gazebo structure and got
her builders to put it together, which was
cheaper than buying a pre-made design.

‘I had a long six-week wait while the concrete
cured before we could add the structure,’ says
Sarah, ‘and, once it was up, I decided to paint
it white as I didn’t like the original orange

How to get the viral
decor trends
Our experts solve your most-asked home dilemmas.
This month, we get the lowdown on the latest looks that are going viral

Are sunken sofas back? Manhattan 3 seater sofa in

Amthal Karim, head of marketing and responsible for trends Dove Grey Classic Plush Fabric,
£699.99, Furniture And Choice
research and product sourcing at Furniture And Choice, says…
‘Sunken sofas and sunken living rooms are the latest retro revival
trends that are going viral on social media. This trend – where
the living room area is below floor level by one or two steps –
brings architecture and interior design together. With most interior trends over
the past few years being more about separation and hiding away thanks to the
pandemic, we’re now craving conversation and company.
Without architectural changes, the sunken sofa aesthetic is best achieved
with a low height, deep-seat sofa design. Ideally, a large corner model
or floating sofa which has legs hidden underneath is best to recreate the
conversation pit effect. This style gives off a cosy vibe and with the low Kansas corner sofa in Grey Premium Faux
base and room layout it creates a cocoon effect. Modular sofas are also a Leather, £999.99, Furniture And Choice
good choice providing ample seating for guests and even
converting to beds for sleepovers.
The visual impact of a sunken sofa in a modern, open-plan
space can be stunning. Having the sofa on a lower level
provides an unobstructed view throughout your home
allowing the architecture to become the focal point. The
only downside to this trend is that a sunken sofa is not
suitable for all homes, so you have to make sure you love
this trend before deciding!’

How can I get the ‘Bookshelf

Wealth’ look?
Shelley Cochrane, accessories buyer at Furniture
Village with over a decade spent working at the
leading furniture retailer, says…

‘The ‘Bookshelf Wealth’ trend is the art of curating

your shelves with books, of course, as well as
decorative pieces that are meaningful to you. Showcasing your inner
wealth on your bookshelves. Of course, there’s no single ‘right’ way
to organise your bookshelf, so whether you lead with aesthetics and
organise your curated selection of books in rainbow order or opt for
a practical A-Z-themed approach, the key is keeping it authentic. That
means only choosing books that you really love but I also recommend
filling your bookshelves with more than just books. Display cherished
family photographs alongside artwork and a selection of ceramic
vases for an eclectic and truly personal take on ‘bookshelf wealth’.
Feature Yvette Filer

This way your bookshelf will serve as a decorative and expressive style
statement, rather than a perfunctory piece of furniture.
Think about lighting too – a table lamp placed among your
collection, or a floor lamp standing beside your shelf, will help to
highlight this area of the home and create a focal point of your shelf
so it becomes a feature, rather than a simple storage solution.’

mall bathrooms are all too common
in most of our homes, but that doesn’t
mean you can’t make the most of the
space you have. Whether you’re looking
to update your main family bathroom,
en-suite or cloakroom, there are plenty of
innovative ways to maximise what you’ve got
without compromising on style. Compact
sanitaryware is key, whether it’s a reduced-
depth basin or bath with a shorter projection,
as is smart storage – you’ll be surprised how
much of a difference wall-hung solutions can
make to the look and feel of your bathroom!
There’s also still plenty of fun to be had with
the design of your small bathroom. While a
light scheme can obviously make a space feel
roomier, we also love bold designs that lean
into the limitations of a small bathroom.

ADDING A WC
to your home
If you’re thinking about adding a small toilet
to your home then there are a few practical
aspects you need to consider before going
ahead. Carving out space from a bedroom
or making the most of the space under your
stairs are good places to start, but there are
building regulation requirements you must
adhere to. ‘A WC room will need to be a
minimum length of 130cm and minimum
width of 70cm,’ explains David Cruz,
bathroom design expert at MyJobQuote.
co.uk. ‘It’s also recommended that you have a
Bellwood cosmetic organiser,

end. But the more room you have, the easier
it’s going to be to use.’
Varying factors will impact the cost of
adding a new WC to your home, but it can
be a worthwhile investment. You’ll need
to see if the toilet can be connected to an

1 Assemble the two IKEA Havsta cabinets with plinths,
following the manufacturer’s instructions.

2 Place the two cabinets side by side and, working inside the
cabinet, screw them together through the adjoining sides to
make once long base unit. Do this by pre-drilling six holes in one
inner side panel – one in each top corner, one in each bottom
corner and one halfway down each side. These holes should be
slightly smaller than the diameter of the screw thread. Screw the
two units together through these six holes.

3 Measure the length and width of the top surface of the

combined base units, then add 2.5cm to the length and
2.5cm to the width to create a suitable overhang.

4 Transfer these measurements to the underside of the

laminate worktop. Mark where it needs to be cut using a
pencil and ruler, and cover the line with a painter’s tape. Redraw
the line on top of the painter’s tape so you can see it clearly and
carefully saw through this line using a circular saw.

5 Use contact adhesive to fix the edge band (supplied with

the worktop) to the cut ends. Apply contact adhesive to both
the edge band and the cut edge of the worktop. Press them
firmly together and smooth along the edge band with your
hand to eliminate any air bubbles. There should be some excess
edge band all the way around, which you will remove later.

6 Project Anna-Lisa De’Ath Styling Marisha Taylor Photos James French

Once the adhesive is thoroughly dry, use a pair of sharp
scissors to cut away the short ends of the edge band. Next,
use a sharp craft knife to cut away the excess overlap on the
long edges of the edge band.

7 Place the worktop centrally on top of the joined

cupboards, making sure the overhang is even all the way
around. Working from inside the cupboard and screwing

8 Fix the joined cupboards to the wall using the fixings
provided and following manufacturer’s instructions. For
a neat finish, run a line of sealant all the way along where the
worktop meets the wall. If you have any gaps between the wall
and the cabinets, look for timber mouldings to cover them, fix in
place with contact adhesive and paint to match the cabinets to
achieve the built-in look.

Mel began by painting the cabinets white
and putting down slate floor tiles, then she
added green panelling to the lower wall and
cream metro tiles as a splashback. ‘However,
the kitchen’s current look, painted in Vert

STRIMMING PREP
When using a grass strimmer, it is essential to wear
safety glasses to protect your eyes from any debris that
may spin up from the ground.
If you are cutting back long grass or clearing weeds
from the base of hedges, check the area thoroughly
for hedgehogs. These spiky little mammals gravitate
towards overgrown grassy sites and hedges to feed on
the beetles and all manner of other insects that live in
these habitats.

gochugaru (see tip) 1 tbsp sesame oil
1½ tbsp crushed garlic 2 tsp honey
salt and pepper lime wedges, to serve

DIRECTIONS

dry, drizzle with the olive oil and massage in.
Generously season with salt and pepper.
QPlace onto a baking tray lined with parchment
paper or make a foil ‘boat’ for the salmon,
to stop the skin from sticking. Bake for 13-15
minutes (or until the thickest part reads 50-55°C
on a meat thermometer). Allow the salmon to
rest for 5-7 minutes.
QWhile your salmon is resting, melt the butter
with the gochujang, gochugaru, sesame oil,
