History

The first people arrived in Finland about 9,000 years ago. i.

There were Sami - people who inhabit Sápmi, their preferred name for region we
call Lapland

Another group probably arrived some 3,000 years later from the southeast. They
possibly spoke a Finno-Ugric language

Finno-Ugric languages: (Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Samu)

The area was gradually Christianized from the 11th century by the Sweden
influence

From the 12th century Sweden and Russia fought for supremacy in Finland, until
in 1323 Sweden ruled most of the country.

On the way to the independence of finland

From 12th century until 1809 Finland was a part of Sweden. After its annexation
by Russia in the Finnish War of 1808–1809 Finland became an autonomic part of
Russian Imperior.

Russia’s losses in World War I and the Russian Revolution of 1917 set the stage
for Finland’s independence in 1917. Finland declared independence on 6
December 1917, and the Bolshevik government recognised Finnish independence
in the October Revolution in Russia on 31 December 1917.

In the Winter War (The Soviet-Finnish War) in WW II and lost 11% of their
territory, including Karelian Isthmus, Hanko islands in the Gulf of Finland.

Finland joined the European Union in 1995. In April 2003 Finland became the
first European country with women as both president and prime minister. (Anneli

Worried because of Russia’s annexation of of Crimea in 2014, they expanded


cooperation with NATO; Winter 2022 they joined NATO, in the wake of Russian
invasion in Ukraine

Religion

The Evangelical Lutheran Church is the largest religious group in Finland; it has
an official status as a national church in the 19th century

Before catholic influence from Sweden (12th century) Finland was orthodox. Some
Finns belong to the Orthodox Church of Finland. Is it still dependent on Moskow?
From 1920 not.

World-famous inventions from finland

The Nokia comes Finland, and the name came from the river 'Nokianvirta'. Before
focusing on telecommunications products, Nokia produced tyres, rubber boots and
televisions, amongst others products!

The earliest versions of sauna in Finland are believed to be around 7000 BC. Finns
would use the sauna to live in, eat in, bathe in, and give birth in.

The first internet browser was invented by four Finnish students - Kim Nyberg,
Teemu Rantanen, Kati Suominen and Kari Sydanmaanlakka - for their master's
project at Helsinki University of Technology.

Famous finns

Tove Jansson (1914 - 2001) With an HPI of 72.95, Tove Jansson is the most
famous Finnish Writer

Akseli Gallen-Kallela (26 April 1865 – 7 March 1931) was a Finnish painter, best
known for his illustrations of the Kalevala.

Linus Torvalds created the Linux kernel and oversaw open source development of
the widely-used Linux operating system
