Activity 1
Read the following scenarios and suggest the meaning(s) that the non - verbal forms of
communication convey.
a. She wore a bright red dress and a large red hat to attend the funeral.
Based on the lady’s appearance, wearing a bright red dress and a large red hat to attend a
funeral intentionally , signifies that she had no respect for the person when they were alive as
for when they have died. The lady specifically chose the red coloured outfit, which can be
seen as a bold, captivating and celebratory colour and it’s understood that she wants to draw
everyone's attention to herself.
OR
Wearing a bright red dress and a large red hat may be shown as a sign to reflect and respect
the deceased in many different cultures. It can be worn to honour the deceased and help send
them on their journey to the afterlife which signifies that the lady had great respect for the
person’s death.
b. A statue of the Lieutenant General was erected in the town square upon his death.
The use of objective form of non verbal communication states that the lieutenant general
was a great individual who gained recognition to his town square and people wanted to show
their consideration, honour and respect to his death by erecting a statue where everyone can
see the great tribute he served as a lieutenant general.
e. Janet did not make eye contact with the teacher when asked about her homework.
Janet did not make eye contact with the teacher signifies her insecurity/anxiousness of not
doing her homework.
Activity 2
A head prefect was newly appointed by the deans at your school. Soon after the induction
ceremony, there were reports of him walking around the school like a soldier, stopping
students on the corridors and staring at them intently. Other reports showed that he would
approach students and point his finger in their faces, with a sneer on his face. He would then
turn around and proceed on his was as if nothing had happened.
2. State two types of non-verbal communication that the students of the school can use
to show their lack of support for the prefect’s actions.
Body Language: Students can use their body language to convey their
disapproval. For example:
Avoidance: They may deliberately avoid eye contact or physical proximity
with the head prefect when he approaches them, signalling their discomfort or
lack of support.
Eye Rolling or Sighing: Rolling eyes, heavy sighs, or other exasperated
expressions can indicate frustration or disagreement with the head prefect's
behaviour.
Facial Expressions: Facial expressions are a powerful form of non-verbal
communication. Students can use their facial expressions to convey their
feelings:
Frowning: A furrowed brow or a frown can indicate displeasure or
disagreement with the head prefect's actions.
Eye Contact: Conversely, maintaining direct eye contact with the head prefect
while displaying a disapproving expression can send a strong non-verbal
message of disagreement.
3. Note the differences between the non-verbal communication forms and behaviours.
Body Language:
Description:Body language is the art of communicating with others through ph
ysical gestures, postures, and movements.
Examples: Avoiding eye contact, maintaining physical distance, turning away
when approached, crossing arms, or physically backing away from the head
prefect.
Function: Without using words, body language can express discomfort,
disapproval, or a desire to withdraw from the conversation.
Facial Expressions:
Description:Different facial muscles are used to create expressions on the face that
represent emotions, thoughts, or reactions.
Examples: Frowning, rolling eyes, sighing audibly, raising eyebrows in surprise,
or maintaining a stern or disapproving facial expression when interacting with the
head prefect.
Function: Highly expressive facial expressions can convey feelings like
annoyance, frustration, disagreement, or disapproval without using words.
Activity 3
1. Three types of non-verbal communication, other than costumes, that would enhance
your performance or stage are:
Gestures- these refer to the actions we naturally use to accompany the words we speak
and the suggestion of emotions and feelings we associate with the words spoken.
Therefore the use of gestures will evoke emotions pertaining to the costume.
Body posture- body posture offers clues of attitude, thoughts, and feelings of an
individual. Since confidence plays a vital role in the proper presentation of the
costume, standing upright and balanced with one’s weight evenly distributed will send
the message.
2. One form of costuming that I would emphasise in my performance is modern
costuming.
3. Since costumes help to establish a character, convey the context of the play and
support the style of the production, the use and emphasis of modern costuming will
show how productions of plays from the past, updated the setting to the present, all
while the test was left relatively unchanged.
Activity 4
Your younger brother is entering school for the first day.
1. State two non-verbal forms of communication that her teacher may observe that suggest
that he is nervous.
2. State two examples of non-communicative behaviour that the teacher could use to make
your brother feel more comfortable.
Answers:
1. The teacher may observe the bouncing of the boy’s leg (body language) or the lack of eye
contact by the boy. He may not feel confident or comfortable enough to look the teacher in
their eye.
2. The teacher can stoop to be at eye level or give a warm smile to seem less intimidating and
make the boy feel more comfortable.
