Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. He had to overcome

Case 2:
A 2015 report revealed that Facebook (now Meta) monitored the online activities of everyone who

regularly reporting their users’ web activity back to Facebook without the users' knowledge.

Case 1
Santha Sheela Nair was an IAS officer in charge of water supply, both in central and state
governments. She was highly committed to water resource management.
While deputed in Chennai, she created systems to ensure a smooth water management process. She
foresaw challenges and worked to avoid them before they happened. She made it a law for all of
Tamil Nadu to implement rainwater harvesting in all buildings. This averted Chennai’s water crisis
in the 2000s. She also promoted rainwater harvesting as a model for other states too.
She was committed to her role as an executive. She gave up her own views to sincerely carry out her
superiors’ suggestions, ensuring it worked on the ground as well. She worked to build such loyalty,
commitment and willingness to deliver in her subordinates too.
Experience in different sectors helped her learn sector-specific needs very fast. It helped her develop

in active service for 38 years, and post-retirement for 7 years.

Anna Mani was an Indian Physicist and Meteorologist. At a time when girls were raised only for

Chemistry.
She got a scholarship to study the spectroscopy of diamonds and rubies at CV Raman’s laboratory at
IISc. She published five research papers on the luminescence of diamonds and rubies as the sole
author. She continued her research at Imperial College, London, where she studied meteorological
instruments. She joined the Indian Meteorological Department and published many research papers.
She helped manufacture various weather instruments. Along with her team, she standardized nearly
100 different instruments so that their production could be started. Apart from this, she also
developed a network of solar radiation measuring stations in India, and the ozone measuring
apparatus. This made it possible to collect data on the ozone layer. She became a part of the
International Ozone Commission. Her research improved the understanding and use of solar and
wind power as energy sources. She retired as the Deputy General of the Indian Meteorological
Department.

In a news article of 2017, people read about the case of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).
The students of their acting course had decided to boycott classes as their demand to extend the
Dialogue Exercise workshop to 3 days (eight hours a day) from the earlier planned 2 days (12 hours
a day) was not met by the administration. While the students stated that it was inhuman to work for
12 hours a day, the administration explained that this move is meant to help students focus on
completing their other projects and course work within the duration of their course. Rejecting the
alternate options suggested by the administration, students remained adamant on not attending their
Dialogue Exercise meetings. The institute planned to take strict action.

Case 2:
Thousands of women every year, especially in Punjab and Haryana, fall prey to marital fraud by
Non-Resident Indian (NRI) spouses. After marriage, the NRI grooms abandon their wives and leave
suddenly.
A small group of affected women have decided to come together to fight back, not only for
themselves, but also for thousands of others who are affected like them.
Bringing the offenders to justice is not simple, as there are no existing provisions in law to effectively
address this kind of crime. These women have collaborated with the Regional Passport Office (RPO)
to take action like suspending the passports of the NRI spouses & withdraw their visas, so that they
can be brought back to face the law in the country.
The RPO offered these women a space to work in, along with a dedicated telephone line to reach
out to other such victims and gave them basic training on how to process complaints. They help
hundreds of affected women collect the necessary documents, copies of FIRs, etc. and prepare all
the paperwork needed for suspension of passports.

Dr. Anant Pandhare and 10 other dedicated doctors decided to work not just for their livelihood but to
give something back to the society. They started with a small ten-bed hospital in Aurangabad district of

The second wave of COVID-19 overwhelmed India’s healthcare infrastructure which was already

Malguzari tanks were ponds constructed, owned and maintained by the Malguzaars up to 1950.
These tanks helped in water harvesting, irrigation and providing fish for local consumption. After
the State Government (of Maharashtra) took over ownership of the land and tanks in 1950,
the Malguzaars stopped taking care of it as they didn’t want to pay the new taxes imposed by the
