Home Tab in MS Word Office 365
The Home tab is the default tab in Microsoft Word and contains the most commonly used
commands related to text formatting, paragraph alignment, clipboard actions, and styles.
Clipboard
Command Description
Paste Inserts the content from the clipboard.
Offers options like Paste Special, Keep
Source Formatting, etc.
Cut Removes the selected text or object and
places it on the clipboard.
Copy Copies the selected text or object to the
clipboard.
Format Painter Copies formatting from one item and
applies it to another. Double-click to use it
multiple times.
Font
Command Description
Font Changes the font type (e.g., Arial, Times
New Roman).
Font Size Sets the size of the text (e.g., 11pt, 12pt).
Increase/Decrease Font Size Enlarges or reduces the font size
incrementally.
Change Case Changes the capitalization (e.g.,
UPPERCASE, lowercase, Capitalize Each
Word).
Clear Formatting Removes all formatting (bold, italic, etc.)
and resets text to default.
Bold Makes the text bold.
Italic Makes the text italic.
Underline Underlines the text.
Strikethrough Draws a line through the middle of the text.
Subscript Lowers the text below the baseline (e.g.,
X₂).
Superscript Raises the text above the baseline (e.g., X²).
Text Effects & Typography Adds shadows, outlines, reflections, etc.
Text Highlight Color Highlights text like a marker.
Font Color Changes the color of the text.
Paragraph
Command Description
Bullets Creates a bulleted list.
Numbering Creates a numbered list.
Multilevel List Creates an outline or hierarchical list.
Decrease/Increase Indent Changes the paragraph’s indentation level.
Sort Sorts selected text alphabetically or
numerically.
Show/Hide ¶ Displays non-printing characters (spaces,
tabs, etc.).
Align Left Aligns text to the left margin.
Center Centers the text.
Align Right Aligns text to the right margin.
Justify Aligns text to both left and right margins.
Line and Paragraph Spacing Sets space between lines or paragraphs.
Shading Applies background color to text or
paragraph.
Borders Adds borders around paragraphs or text
blocks.
Styles
Command Description
Style Gallery Quick access to built-in styles like Heading
1, Title, Subtitle, etc.
Apply Styles Applies pre-set formatting styles to text.
Create a Style Allows custom styles to be created and
reused.
Clear All Removes all styles and formatting.
Editing
Command Description
Find Searches for text or formatting in the
document.
Replace Finds specific text and replaces it with
something else.
Select Allows you to select all, specific objects, or
text with similar formatting.
