WEEK 6 – Discipleship, Speaking and Doing
What is Discipleship
Definition:
discipleship (Lat. discipulus, “pupil”) NT Greek terms mathētēs (“one who learns”) and
akolouthein (“to follow after”) used for Jesus’ followers show the relationship between
Jesus and his disciples. Broadly, discipleship has been a term for the Christian life, with
di erent Christian traditions and groups stressing particular aspects of Christian living.
Donald K. McKim, The Westminster Dictionary of Theological Terms, Second Edition,
Revised and Expanded (Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2014), 89.
Is there an example we can learn from?
1. Jesus
a. How he lived
b. What he taught
c. What does he do with the disciples
The Cost of Discipleship
In The Cost of Discipleship, Bonhoe er warns against "cheap grace"—grace without
repentance, discipleship, or the cross. He calls Christians to embrace "costly grace,"
which demands obedience and self-denial. True discipleship, he says, means following
Christ even when it leads to su ering, sacrifice, and death. “When Christ calls a man,”
Bonhoe er writes, “he bids him come and die.”

How are we discipling today?
Connecting
The importance of connecting to people is foundational in discipleship — Jesus met
people where they were, often beginning with simple presence and attention.
Being intentional in meeting means prioritizing time with others, not just waiting for
connection to happen. This includes initiating conversations, following up, and showing
consistent care that reflects Christ’s love.
Building relationships
Deep relationships in discipleship are formed over time — trust doesn't develop
overnight.
Overcoming adversity together — walking with someone through hardship
demonstrates loyalty and builds bonds that can’t be faked.
Being open builds intimacy — vulnerability invites others to open up, creating a
safe space for honesty and growth.
Doing life with them — more than meetings or lessons, this means sharing
everyday moments: meals, errands, struggles, celebrations. Discipleship thrives
in the rhythms of ordinary life lived together.
Hearing God
27
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal
life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
John 10:27-28
1. Through Scripture (The Primary Way)
"All Scripture is God-breathed..." – 2 Timothy 3:16
God speaks clearly and authoritatively through the Bible. Reading it regularly,
prayerfully, and reflectively allows His voice to shape your mind and heart.
Practice: Use lectio divina—read slowly, meditate, pray, and rest in God’s
presence.
Tools: Study Bibles, commentaries, and devotional guides can help deepen
understanding.

2. Through the Holy Spirit
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." – John 10:27
The Spirit brings conviction, comfort, and guidance. He may speak to your heart through
impressions, inner nudges, or quiet thoughts aligned with God’s truth.
Discernment Tip: The Spirit never contradicts Scripture. Test what you hear.
3. Through Prayer and Silence
God often speaks in stillness. Elijah heard the “still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).
Practice: Set aside daily time for listening, not just speaking.
Journaling: Write down what you sense God saying and revisit it with Scripture.
4. Through Community
God can speak through the wise counsel of others, including pastors, mentors, or
friends in Christ.
Proverbs 11:14: “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an
abundance of counselors there is safety.”
5. Through Circumstances and Creation
God can guide through open and closed doors (Acts 16:6–10), and His creation declares
His glory (Psalm 19:1).
Be attentive: Look for patterns, confirmations, or holy disruptions.
6. Through Dreams, Visions, or Prophetic Words (With Discernment)
Some Christians report hearing God through supernatural means, as seen in Scripture
(e.g., Acts 10, Matthew 1:20). These should be weighed carefully.

Proclamation and Demonstration
Can we now combine the Speaking and the Doing?
Clarifications
Identity:
Am I natural Evangelist? Y/N
For Yes: Do it!
For No:
How to Initiate: Find a person or group or place, Am I called to evangelise to this
Person/Group/Place? Y/N
For Yes: Pray for direction (Intercession: pray for the person and ask what
God wants to do in this person's life)
(Why: your identity is in Christ and therefore you need to align your heart
(will and emotions) to God's heart).
For No: Find another person/group, repeat until it’s a Yes.
Intercession: Start praying for that person/group! How does God see this person? How
are you seeing this person?
How are you seeing this person/group:
Causing chaos/problems, annoying, evil, intolerable, harmful, addicted etc.
Very moral person but doesn’t know Jesus, enjoy spending time with them, are
very open about their life.
76 | P a g e o f 8 9
Evangelism Workshop – Jeremy Hanke
CECA PETRA CHURCH 2025
How is God seeing this person/group:
God sees everything, their past, their future and their present.
Why is the person the way that they are? God can give you insights to the person.
When you receive something from God about this person, pray into it. God
wants to build a relationship with this person, so we need to pray that the
relationship can happen. It may include praying about a sin and to lead
them to repentance, it may be over problems in their lives, it may be
random or very specific. Pray.
Sharing the gospel:
When is the right time to share the good news? What should I share?
Sharing your testimony:
When is the right time to share my testimony? How much should I share?
You will likely have a feeling that it is the right time to share with these
person/people. If it goes wrong, that is okay, I believe God will still use
that!
Repentance:
Are they receptive? Do they want stop and change? Do they want to follow Jesus?
Praying:
What are the problems they have encountered? How can we pray things o them?

Case Studies – Discuss 1 Scenario per table / group
Case Study 1: “Open but Unanchored”
You often find yourself in conversation with Leo, a friendly and reflective graphic
designer who works out of the same coworking hub as you. You’ve shared many
casual conversations over co ee, but recently those chats have taken a deeper turn.
Leo describes himself as “spiritual but not religious.” He’s explored mindfulness, read
books on energy, and even tried sound healing workshops. “I think there’s more to life
than just the physical,” he once said. “But I don’t believe anyone can claim they’ve
found the truth.”
Leo is warm and open-minded. He doesn’t mock religion, but he’s sceptical of
certainty. “Religions seem to just fight over who’s right,” he commented once. Still,
he’s asked you thoughtful questions about your beliefs—what prayer means to you,
how you navigate doubt, and why you trust the Bible. He listens respectfully and often
responds with a quiet “hmm,” rather than immediate critique.
He’s not searching out of crisis, but from curiosity. He’s drawn to peace, beauty, and
authenticity. One afternoon, after you described how Jesus o ers a relationship, not
just rituals, he said, “That’s interesting—I’ve never heard it explained that way.”
You sense Leo is open—but also cautious. He’s not ready for a sermon. But maybe
he’s ready for someone to patiently walk with him toward the possibility that the God
he’s vaguely aware of might actually be reaching for him, personally and lovingly.
You're wondering: what would it look like to be that presence in Leo’s life—not
pushing him, but helping him find that the truth he's open to might be more knowable
than he ever imagined

Case Study 2: “Lines in the Sand”
Jordan is one of your classmates in a university social justice unit. Bold, articulate,
and passionate, Jordan identifies as non-binary and is deeply involved in LGBTQ+
advocacy on campus. They often express frustration with religious institutions—
especially Christianity—which they see as historically oppressive and exclusionary.
“It’s not just outdated,” they once said in a seminar. “It’s harmful. People have
su ered for centuries because of religious bigotry.”
Despite their outspoken stance, you’ve found Jordan approachable in private settings.
You once helped carry their project materials after a lecture, and that small act led to
a string of co ee meetups. In these quieter moments, Jordan shares more personally.
“I’ve always been a deep feeler,” they told you. “I just want people to be safe, loved,
and free.”
They know you’re a Christian. You haven’t hidden that—but you haven’t pushed it
either. So far, your approach has been to listen, ask thoughtful questions, and show
genuine care. In one conversation, Jordan asked, “How do you reconcile your beliefs
with your love for people like me?” There was no anger in their voice—just a guarded
sincerity.
They aren’t looking for theology—they’re watching your life. For Jordan, love and
safety are non-negotiables. You sense they’ve been hurt before. Maybe by Christians.
Maybe by the church. They’re not curious about religion—but maybe curious about
you. You wonder: could you be the one to show them that Jesus doesn’t erase identity
or story—but speaks to the heart with truth and compassion that confronts pain with
healing?

Case Study 3: “Ashes of Faith”
Chris was once the most passionate believer you knew. In high school, he was the
one leading songs at youth group, organising Bible studies, and inviting friends to
church. You lost touch for a while, but reconnected recently through a mutual friend.
Over co ee, you catch up, and the conversation eventually drifts to faith. “I don’t
believe anymore,” Chris says plainly. “I think I believed in the idea of God—but when
life got complicated, none of it held up.”
There’s no bitterness in his tone—just weariness. He hasn’t deconstructed in reaction
to a single event; it was a slow drift. “I kept asking questions,” he says. “And the
answers just didn’t satisfy. Eventually, I stopped asking.”
Chris hasn’t replaced his faith with anything else. He isn’t drawn to other spiritual
paths. He just finds meaning in work, friends, and living a decent life. But when you
shared a small personal story about how prayer helped you during a tough season, he
paused. “I miss that,” he said. “Not the rules. But the sense that Someone cared.”
He respects you and isn’t hostile. But he’s hesitant. Faith feels like a house he once
lived in—familiar, but now abandoned. You wonder if a gentle re-introduction to
Jesus—not the version shaped by church politics or pressure, but the real person—
might awaken something long-buried.
The question now is: can you help Chris see that faith isn’t about returning to where
he was, but discovering anew the grace that patiently waits even in the ruins?

Case Study 4: “Left in Silence”
Anna is a friend you met through a local community fitness group a few years ago.
She’s in her early 30s—driven, smart, always laughing at something. She used to host
game nights, plan weekend hikes, and light up every room she entered. But a recent
cancer diagnosis has changed everything. Treatment has slowed her down, and her
once-busy calendar is now filled with hospital visits and recovery days.
You’ve stayed close, checking in regularly, bringing meals, and occasionally just
sitting with her in quiet. One evening, after watching a show together, she opens up.
“I used to pray,” she says softly, eyes fixed on the ceiling. “Not religiously… but I
believed God was there. I don’t know anymore.” Her voice cracks slightly. “I’ve been
calling out to Him… and it feels like nothing’s on the other end.”
She doesn’t sound angry—just tired. She talks about how isolating sickness is, even
when people are trying to help. “I feel like I’m disappearing,” she says. “And if God’s
real… why is He silent now, when I need Him most?”
You’ve o ered to pray for her before. She didn’t refuse, but she never asked again
either. Still, she keeps letting you in.
Anna isn’t looking for answers—she’s longing for presence, for meaning. You sense
she’s not as far from God as she thinks. The silence she dreads might actually be a
space waiting to be filled with grace.
Now you’re wondering—how can you walk with her in this valley? How do you show
her that the God she’s unsure about is not distant or indi erent, but close, tender, and
faithful—even in the dark?
