Abstract
The study aims to verify the usefulness of digital media and social networks in education. The use of social
media in education provides students with the ability to get more useful information, to connect with
learning groups and other educational systems that make education convenient. Social network tools
support students and institutions with multiple opportunities to improve learning methods. In this paper, a
survey methodology through questioning the attitudes of students in the affiliated 7 College under the
University of Dhaka towards the use of social media in education is adopted. There is no denying the fact
that there are so many obstacles to the use of social media as a tool for education but this paper focuses on
how students think about the effectiveness of these media in education. The findings of this study show that
almost 77% think that it’s really beneficial to use social media as an educational tool and proper use of it
changes the nature of learning. We propose that there is an opportunity to leverage social media in
education to deliver content and engage students and educators in ways not previously possible. This study
was conducted at 7 colleges.

1. INTRODUCTION
Famous Dave Willis once said that “don’t use social media to impress people; use it to impact people." Social
media commonly referred to as interactive media can be defined as the applications and websites designed
to allow users to create and share content and network locally and globally. This technology facilitates users'
sharing of information, ideas, and thoughts by providing virtual social communities and networks. Over the
past years, social media was not highly rated as a useful platform by most ordinary people, but with
evolution, it has now become the world’s most powerful tool for connecting socially, economically,
politically et al. With 4 billion people globally using social media, the tool has rapidly grown to impact people
across different facets of life ranging from education, business, innovations, politics, non-governmental
charitable organizations et al.
Social and digital media has brought the world closer than ever. This fastest-growing technology and its
implementation have completely changed the world in both bad and good ways. Web-based interactive
media tools including applications such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn,
Google Search, etc. are being used by billions of people across the globe for various reasons, including
connecting, sharing information, and, most importantly, conducting E-learning sessions. In the present
world, almost everyone has an electronic device which has made it possible to access one’s social media and
digital platform from any place to communicate with friends and family.
Social media and digital platforms are becoming the main form of communication. Most people adopt the
use due to the need and pressure of being up to date with the current local and global trends, news, and
other issues. For the longest time, social media has been used for social connections and business purposes
to some extent; however, nowadays social media platforms are being used to drive important discussions
and key sectors such as education. Social media and digital platforms make it easy for a student to learn
deeply about something online and ask questions about the problem they are facing in different
communities that are experts in that field without spending much of their time.

Problem Statement
This paper focuses on how social media has impacted learning at the university level, especially in affiliated
7 Colleges under the University of Dhaka by exploring the importance and effectiveness of using social media
platforms including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, etc. In the implementation of
education policies and teaching environment as well as how it is improving the learning skill among students.
Hence this study was conducted to know the effectiveness of using social and digital media in education.
In this paper, the researcher relies on the relevant theories, previous literature, and the results of field
research in the affiliated 7 College under the University of Dhaka on the employment of social media as a
means of learning with different characteristics. This is achieved through the views and opinions of students
about the role of those methods in the education process. This paper examines the use of social media tools
to support this form of education. The study includes the participation of students from various disciplines
in the academic session 2022-2023 of 7 colleges.

SIGNIFICANCE
i ) The importance of this study lies in being one of the studies, which discusses the role of social networking
sites in education, and the development of interaction between teachers and students and students and
students on the other hand.
ii ) The findings of this study will help those working in the education and education sectors to identify the
possible benefits set of utilizing social media tools to improve teaching and learning processes.

OBJECTIVES
In providing possible solutions for the research problem, various objectives have been formulated, including
the following:

General objective
The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing digital and social media among the
students of 7 colleges under the University of Dhaka. It also aims to know how it saves students time and
makes it easy for them to communicate and shares study materials with students with similar interests.

Specific objectives
A) Attitudes of students towards the use of social media in education.
B) Benefits of social media utilization in education: Student-Teacher bonding, extracurricular
activities, saves time.
C) The role of social media in education: To improve interaction, especially for introverted students.
Create political and social awareness.
D) Challenges of using social media in education.

Limitations
Even after doing our best to make this paper as much as possible perfect, it still has some limitations. The
major limitations are
A) we had taken a sample of 170 students which is a little bit small amount of number with respect to our
population.
B) Time needed to make this paper more and more representative wasn’t in our hands, we had to write this
paper in a short period of time.
C) This paper is based on the data collected through a Questionnaire which was eventually sent to the
participants through online without any physical communication.

2. Review of Literature
The Internet is considered a World Wide Web for communication. It connects hundreds of thousands of
computer networks. It is considered a communication system that allows computer machines to exchange
communication. Researchers in the field of communication define it as a cooperative means of
communication that includes a huge number of computer networks worldwide, which allows individuals and
groups to use it as a means of communication on a vast mass scale (Aljaad: 2016, pp. 194-202).
Social media is the platforms that enable the interactive web by engaging users to participate in, comment
on and create content as means of communicating with their social graph, other users and the public which
have content formats including text, video, photographs, audio, PDF and PowerPoint.(Cohen, 2011). It can
be said that social media is the tools, services, and communication facilitating connection between peers
with common interests.
Using social media in a learning process begin to rise significantly and likely to imply for education practice
and provision especially in term of connecting with their students or with their colleagues, to access news
and appear in their walls. (Patel, Social Media management, 2016). Learning that is based around principles
of collective exploration, play and innovation rather than individualized instruction (Thomas, 2011). This fact
can be used with in a classroom situation to create more value to learning.
By spending so much time working with new technologies, students develop more familiarity with computers
and other electronic devices. With the increased focus on technology in education and business, this will
help students build skills that will aid them throughout their lives.(Dunn, 2011).

Bexheti (2014), reported that there are several reasons to use social media in the classroom as follows:
1. Its content supports teaching and learning in a lifelong learning scale; it contributes to fairness and
inclusion and increases standards on Higher Education institutions to improve the quality and availability of
their course content.
2. Social media gives the possibility to the students to create digital content on their own and publish it
online, increasing a vast resource of user-created content from which learners and teachers can jointly
benefit, also encouraging more active and proactive approaches to learning.
3. Social media is a network that connects students, and with their teachers, allowing them to share their
knowledge and at the same time have access to specific and targeted knowledge in a given field of interest.
4. Social media makes possible collaboration between learners and teachers on a given task or project or a
joint objective, pooling resources, and gathering the expertise of a group of people working towards a
common objective (Bexheti:2014).
Crowley (2015), also discusses some reasons to use social media in the classroom as follows:
1. Social media provides venues for students to share their stories both within and beyond the classroom.
2. It also grants opportunities for them to hear stories from beyond their school.
3. Social media helps students to recognize the power of personal voice.

According to Greenhow & Robelia (Greenhow & Robelia: 2009, pp. 1130-1161), integrating social media in
learning and teaching environments may yield new forms of inquiry, communication, collaboration, identity
work, or have positive cognitive, social, and emotional impacts. Another research by Mazman and Usluel
(2010), has suggested learning through sites and social networks (for example, Facebook) in particular since
they are available for interaction, cooperation, information, and resource sharing. Amin et al. (Ahmad &
Ahmad : 2019, pp. 746-778; Amin et al.: 2020, pp. 1-25), state that social networking sites encourage
participation and critical thinking, Ajjan and Hartshorne (Ajjan & Hartshorne: 2008, pp. 71-80), increased
peer support and communication on course content and evaluation (DiVall & Kirwin: 2012, pp. 1-5);
intercultural language learning (Mills: 2011, pp. 345-368); and its positive effects on identity expression and
digital literacy, especially for marginalized groups (Manca and Ranieri: 2013, pp. 487-504).

Blogging is used for publishing research papers and school homework. Hosting system where students use
the blogging system in publishing their research papers and homework electronically instead of the
traditional way. It creates an environment of cooperation and constructive dialogue between the students
byfollowing up on the blogs of their colleagues and commenting on them (Al-Khalifa: 2008, Kenna & Hensley:
2019, pp. 86-94).
Educators and students can use Facebook in Education to create a Facebook page or group for educational
purpose by:
• Inviting teachers and students to participate by exchanging information and sharing and exchanging
Internet links related to the educational topic.
• Upload educational pictures and videos related to the educational topic, then teachers and students can
share, discuss and comment on them (Madge et al.: 2009, pp. 141-155; DeSchryver et al.: 2009, pp. 329-
336).
Aljaad’s study (Aljaad: 2016, pp. 194-202; Ahmad & Sahar: 2019, pp. 1540-1543), aims at identifying the role
of social communication tools in education from the Saudi female students’ perspectives studying at the
college of education at King Saud University-Riyadh. This study used a survey, which was distributed to 500
female students. The results showed that 90% of respondents used social media where 95% said social media
improved interaction with each other and raised the sense of social responsibility, 56% used all tools of social
media. 45% used social media for more than 6 hours daily. 61% believed that social networks promoted
democratic values and spread political culture. 62% of respondents used social media to do homework or
academic projects and research. 99% of respondents believed that social media allowed them to follow new
information about their academic specialty and obtained specialized scientific consulting. 79% of
respondents believed that one goal of creating accounts in social networks was learning specific science
knowledge or a foreign language. 9% of respondents benefited from social media in social educational
consulting. 44% of respondents preferred to debate scientific and educational topics. 84% of respondents
agreed that social networks provided the opportunity to form relationships with those interested in a
particular scientific subject and exchange experiences and information with them.
Greenhow & Robelia (Greenhow & Robelia: 2009, pp. 1130-1161), argue that social media has the potential
to bridge formal and informal learning through participatory digital cultures. Exemplars of sophisticated use
by young people support this claim, although the majority of young people adopt the role of consumers

rather than full participants. Scholars have suggested the potential of social media for integrating formal and
informal learning, yet this work is commonly under-theorized. We propose a model theorizing social media
as a space for learning with varying attributes of formality and informality. Through two contrasting case
studies, we apply our model together with social constructivism and connectivism as theoretical lenses
through which to tease out the complexities of learning in various settings. We conclude that our model
could reveal new understandings of social media in education, and outline future research directions.
McKinney & Rill (McKinney & Rill: 2009), studied the effects of YouTube discussions on a group of university
students, their number was (311) students. They aimed at finding the implications of the available
discussions on CNN and YouTube. McKinney & Rill (McKinney & Rill: 2009) put a special focus on the effects
of these discussions on youth and their attitudes toward democracy as well as their political values. The
results of this study reflected the success of this method of debate as it makes the youth more active and
raises their political awareness and efficiency as well as their trust in candidates. This method also decreased
the amount of political satire and joking about the candidates. It also helped with reinforcing effective
information desired by the candidates in the minds of the youth.
Livingstone (Livingstone: 2008, pp. 393-411), studied teenagers’ use of social networking sites for intimacy,
privacy, and self-expression. This study explored teenagers’ practices of social networking to uncover the
proper connections between online opportunities and risk. She proved that expressing ideas and identity on
social networks exist within real relationships. Her study draws a picture of the contradictions between the
real world and the virtual world of teenagers. She gave a binary classification of social networking sites. Thus,
she proposed one of the several meanings of shaping online privacy.
Halil (Halil: 2012), investigated student and teachers’ social network usage tendencies and tried to identify
what sort of social and educational activities they practiced on these networks. The study was carried out
on five student teachers studying at various departments of Ankara University, Faculty of Educational
Sciences. It was qualitative research and the data were collected via two-hour focus group interviews. The
data were analyzed through content analysis. The results indicated that the most useful social network
according to the teacher candidates is Facebook. Student teachers use social networks for fun, sharing, social
responsibility, and educational purposes as well as communications. Exchanging personal information was
the commonest use of Facebook for communication. At the same level of commonness of use, there was
sharing of different data like videos, photos, songs, and poems. Participants believe that social networks are
safe and confidential provided that they are confident of their security settings. The study also showed that
social networks improve social interaction among their users depending on the type and goals of usage.

3. Methodology
Study area.
The present study was conducted in affiliated 7 Colleges under the University of Dhaka, mainly at Dhaka
College, Eden Mohila College, and Govt. Titumir College. The data are collected through a questionnaire.

Population and research sample.


The population of the study consists of all the students who are currently reading in 7 colleges under
the University of Dhaka, during the academic year 2022-2023. While the sample was purposive sampling
used to achieve the goal of the study. the sample includes 170 students.

Research Instruments.
The questionnaire was used to collect data from the research sample. This study relied on a questionnaire
to collect information. Items were selected based on studies and research in the field of social media. A
descriptive research design is concerned with describing the characteristics of a problem. The questionnaire
is the method used to get information in descriptive research (Mohajan: 2018, pp. 23-48).

A research Questionnaire was used to collect information from students of 7 colleges, mainly answering
the following statement:

• To determine the percentage of students using social media regularly.


• Attitudes of students towards the use of social media in education.
• To explore how students are exposed to a whole new way of learning through social and digital
media.
• Benefits of utilizing social media in education.
• How social networking sites are helping introverted students come out of the closet and encounter
other students.
• The role of social media in education.
• Challenges facing the use of social media in education.

4. Data Analysis
The first finding of this research is almost 91% of students admit that they use social media and digital
platforms regularly.

Figure 3 represented the percentage of distribution of the respondents spending time on social and digital
media where 22% of respondents spend less than 2 hours, 38% spends 2-4 hours, 24% spends 4-6 hours, 8%
spends almost 7 hours and the rest of them spend more than 8 hours on social media daily.

Figure 4 shows that only 16% of students are using social media only for entertainment purposes while 28%
are doing almost the same thing, but 31% of respondents reply that they are using it both for entertainment
and education purposes, and 17% and 8% respondents said they are using it mainly for education and only
for education respectively.

The research finds out that many students believe that social media like Facebook, Youtube, digital platforms
like google, and other social media play a huge role in the education sector if they are used properly almost
63% of student use Google, 57% of the student seeking help through Facebook and stay informed about
their interested subject. While a huge number of students are using youtube to understand difficult topics
clearly.

Discussion
It is shown in table 3:
1. The research comes to the conclusion that almost 77% of students think that utilizing social media
can bring positive results.
2. Almost 54% of the students believe that social and digital media changing the nature of learning.
3. 71% of students support the statement that they get a lot of support from time to time in their
Study through social and digital media.
4. Almost 64% of students admit that social media has brought them and their respective teachers
Closer than ever.
5. Even though 66% of the students went through some challenges in using social media in education.

It is indicated that a major educational implication of social media is the apparently changing nature of
learners’ relationships with information and knowledge. Social media is gaining its momentum at an
unimaginable speed. It also indicates that people are constantly connected to each other and with the
outside world. Students are getting benefited with the positive use of social media in their life. Even though
there are some challenges in utilizing social and digital media in education but there is no denying from most
of the students that it has created so many new opportunity for students to Learn new things in a student
friendly way and it is a tool that helps a lot in education sector nowadays. So what found is that social media
tools provide learners with new opportunities to become independent in study and research.

Even though social media support forms of knowledge consumption and knowledge construction, the
students may ask the lecturers on Facebook the principles of the subject and the lecturers gives the
instruction and explanation directly on Facebook. Regarding to the relationship between using social media
with the grades of college students, concurrent with past studies that online communication is linked to time
spent in offline relationships. (Jacobsen & Forste, May 2011). This takes time to answer the question in
offline relationships; students may lose interest on the learning process. With this kind of technology, there
is an opportunity to exchange the ideas, share knowledge and given to other person information, links and
else. Within a few minutes after asking the ideas or knowledge, we enjoy the information. This is very useful
for lecturers in the digital age, horizon of the world seemed to be in touch of our fingers. (Wicaksana &
Puspitawati, 2015).

Conclusion
From our study, we reach at the conclusion that so many students in the present world continuously keep
themselves attached to social and digital media. And many of them are using this platform not just to have
some fun but also for some serious issues such as education, constant connection with the world to know
new information and news about the world, keep themselves updated with this fastest-growing tech world,
and many more.
Social media, Facebook, and the internet are relevant fields of education technology and this is still has a
long period of evolution. We can Prepare a strategy to activate students’ use of social sites for academic
purposes, by registering and participating in closed educational groups within these sites is to create a
collaborative learning environment between students and teachers.
Social media has created a new environment of learning and exploring as an educational tool. With the help
of social media students nowadays are aware of many new opportunities. Besides its many disadvantages
still, it comes as a toll that can not avoid if we really want to make ourselves intellectual. Many interesting
new books summaries, scientific articles, news articles, new scientific innovations, etc. everything is readily
available and which savings students’ time also.
In our research many students admit those facts that there is a huge positive impact of using social and
digital media in a good manner can help a student a lot in all kinds of education. It is important to work in
different kind of educational designs that enhance the use of social media, so the campus itself must follow
the development of technology, advances technology and learning innovation in 21st century. The
implication of social media, Facebook and internet in students and lecturers perceptions are very important
for future learning.
