Simultaneous equations involve solving a set of equations with multiple variables to find a common solution. The document outlines three methods for solving these equations: substitution, elimination, and graphical methods, each with step-by-step instructions. Additionally, it provides practice questions for further understanding.

BGCSE Mathematics: Simultaneous Equations

1. What are Simultaneous Equations?

Simultaneous equations are a set of two or more equations with multiple variables that are solved
together to find a common solution.

2. Methods for Solving Simultaneous Equations

1. Substitution Method

1. Solve one equation for one variable in terms of the other.

2. Substitute this expression into the second equation.
3. Solve for the remaining variable.
4. Substitute back to find the other variable.

Example: Solve:

 Express y in terms of x:
 Substitute in the second equation:
 Find y:
 Solution:

2. Elimination Method

1. Multiply equations (if necessary) to make the coefficients of one variable the same.
2. Add or subtract equations to eliminate one variable.
3. Solve for the remaining variable.
4. Substitute back to find the other variable.

Example: Solve:

 Add both equations:

 Substitute into the first equation:
 Solution:

3. Graphical Method
1. Rearrange equations into the form .
2. Plot both equations on a graph.
3. The intersection of the lines gives the solution.

3. Practice Questions
1. Solve using substitution:
2. Solve using elimination:
3. Solve graphically:
