The local environment affects our health, quality of life, and the sustainability of the planet.
Clean air and water are essential for our health and the health of ecosystems. A well-maintained
environment contributes to beautiful landscapes and thriving wildlife, making our communities
more enjoyable places to live. Additionally, by caring for our local environment, we help combat
climate change and protect the planet's natural resources.
Despite its importance, our local environment faces various challenges. Pollution from factories,
vehicles, and improper waste disposal can harm the air, soil, and water. Deforestation and
urbanization can lead to loss of biodiversity and disruption of ecosystems. As communities grow,
the demand for resources can put a strain on the environment. However, there are steps we can
take to address these challenges and create a healthier local environment such as reducing,
reusing and recycling, using eco-friendly transportation, or simply planting trees and gardens.
Preserving our local environment is a shared responsibility. Every small action we take can have
a positive impact on our surroundings. By making conscious choices and adopting sustainable
practices, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and more vibrant local environment for ourselves
and future generations. Let's work together to protect the natural beauty and resources that make

A good deal of fascinating research has been done into reading patterns of young people ,
and it is surprising to discover at what an early age children start expressing preferences for
particular kinds of book. A recent report which examined in detail the reading habit of primary
school children, showed that even seven-year-old boys and girls have clear views about what
they want to read. Girls, in general, read more and far more girls than boys preferred reading
stories. Boys were showing a taste for the more instant appeal of picture stories, or else books
about their hobbies. These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers.
Apparently, girls read more in general, but more fiction in particular. You could say that there
are more opportunities for girls to read fiction: magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in
their early teens, and by their late teens they have probably moved on to the adult women’s
magazines. Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their hobbies: motorcycles, heavy
transport and so on.

Three Things to Do in New York
There are so many things to see and do in New York, sometimes it is difficult to know
where to start. In this week’s guide, we look at three things you can’t miss when you visit the
city.
Start by spending some time in Central Park. With over 25,000 trees and lots of different
types of birds, it’s easy to forget you’re in a big city. Relax and enjoy the fresh air or go for a
tour in a horse and carriage. In summer you can go out on the lake in a boat or kayak, and in
winter you can go ice-skating. After all those activities you’ll be hungry, so have lunch at the
famous Tavern on the Green. Great concerts take place in Central Park, too. Every year the New
York Philharmonic Orchestra gives a free open-air concert and there’s also the New York
Shakespeare Festival at the theatre in the park.
They say that Paris has the Eiffel Tower, London has the London Eye and New York has
the Empire State Building. But many people think the best views of the city are from the ‘Top of
the Rock’ - the top floor of the GE (General Electric) building, a skyscraper in the middle of the
city. At 260 metres high, it’s the fourteenth tallest building in New York, and from the top you
can have a fantastic view of the city.
Many people visit the famous Statue of Liberty by ferry, but also on the way is the
Immigration Museum on Ellis island. This was the place where people first arrived from 1892 to
1954, many after a long and difficult journey from other countries. Most of the island is closed to
the general public, but you can visit the museum and find out about the many people who arrived
here. You can also go on a tour with a guide to visit some of the old, unused buildings on the
island. A very interesting day out for everyone.
29. Why is it ‘easy to forget you’re in a big city’ when you visit Central Park?

The most fascinating change in societies in developing countries is undoubtedly the
significant rise in women’s participation in work and education. In these nations, an increasing
number of women are attending college, earning advanced degrees, and finding employment.
They are no longer content to be housewives who only stay at home. The socioeconomic
situation in these countries will be significantly impacted by this abrupt change.
The financial burden placed on the male 'breadwinners' in the family will decrease as more
women enter the workforce. However, they will also learn to share household duties and stop
acting as the household's dominant figures and decision-makers. Children will undoubtedly
benefit from this change. Their fathers will show them more love and attention. Because both
parents will be working, they will also become more independent.
As a result, the service industry will face challenges first. There will be an increase in
demand for after-school programs, tutoring, convenience foods, and housekeeping services.
People who are more educated and have more money to spend will demand better products and
higher living standards. Consequently, this will aid in the economic growth of the nations.

Clothing is more than just a practical necessity; it's a form of self-expression and cultural
identity. From the vibrant saris of India to the sleek business suits of Western countries, clothing
carries stories and traditions.
In my own life, I've found that what I wear can reflect my mood and personality. On
confident days, I might choose bold colors and statement pieces, while on quieter days, I opt for
cozy sweaters and muted tones. Each garment holds memories too - the concert tee that reminds
me of an unforgettable night, or the worn-out sneakers that have traveled the world with me.
Beyond personal expression, clothing plays a crucial role in society. It can signify occupation,
like a doctor's white coat or a chefs apron. It can also convey social norms and expectations, such
as the formal attire worn to weddings or the uniforms students don at school. Moreover, clothing
trends evolve with time, reflecting changes in culture, technology, and values.
However, the fashion industry's environmental impact has raised concerns. The fast-
paced cycle of trends contributes to waste and pollution. As a response, sustainable fashion
movements are gaining momentum, encouraging mindful consumption and eco-friendly
production.

Ten-day Chinese Traffic Jam (24th August, 2010)
Motorists in China are experiencing a traffic jam from hell. Thousands of drivers have been
stuck in their cars for ten days on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway just outside the Chinese capital.
The gridlock started on August 14th when roadworks began. The bad news is that the chaos will
continue for another month. The tailbacks stretch back for 100km. The situation has been made
worse by dozens of cars breaking down or overheating. Around 400 traffic police have been
assigned to patrol the jam to make sure tensions don’t rise too far. The horrendous snarl-up is the
result of the explosion in the number of cars on Chinese roads. As China becomes wealthier,
more people are buying cars, thus causing more traffic problems.
Drivers trapped in the traffic jam know they have to be patient and sit for long hours in their
cars. There are no showers for them to use and if they need to use a toilet, they have to lock their
car and wander off to the nearest café. There are many complaints of local people taking
advantage of the stranded motorists by charging them more than double prices for drinks and
snacks. People are keeping themselves busy by playing cards or board games. Some have
reported feeling homesick. One truck driver, Juang Shao expressed his frustration over the
situation: “I’ve missed my daughter’s birthday and the food in my truck has probably turned into
soup,” he said. He said he was worried his truck could be stuck in the traffic forever.

Obesity increases a person’s risk of cancer, heart disease and other diseases. About 2.6 billion
people globally - 38% of the world population - are already overweight or obese. But on current
trends that is expected to rise to more titan 4 billion people (51%) in 12 years’ time, according to
research by the World Obesity Federation.
Obesity among children and young people is likely to increase faster than that among adults. By
2035 it is expected to be at least double the rate seen in 2020 - it will rise by 100% among boys
under 18, but go up even more sharply, by 125%, among girls the same age.
Switzerland, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Sweden are among the best prepared countries to deal
with obesity while Niger, Nigeria, Somalia and Central African Republic are examples of the
world’s poorest countries that are the least prepared. Professor Louise Baur, the federation’s
president, says that the sharpest increases in obesity will be seen in low- and middle-income
countries where lack of preparedness and resources will create a perfect storm that will
negatively impact obese people the most.
The rising obesity globally is caused by factors such as climate change. Covid restrictions and
chemical pollutants, as well as the promotion of unhealthy foods. It is suggested that
governments should restrict the marketing of foods that are high in fat, salt or sugar, and provide
healthy food in schools.

An ecodistrict is an urban area designed to promote sustainability and environmental
responsibility. These districts incorporate green infrastructure, energy-efficient buildings, and
waste reduction systems to minimize their ecological footprint. By using renewable energy
sources such as solar and wind power, ecodistricts aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
support a healthier urban environment.
One of the key features of an ecodistrict is its focus on efficient resource use. Many ecodistricts
implement water conservation strategies, such as rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling,
to reduce water consumption. Additionally, sustainable transportation options, including bike
lanes, electric public transit, and pedestrian-friendly pathways, help decrease air pollution and
traffic congestion. These efforts contribute to creating more livable and resilient urban
communities.
Despite their benefits, ecodistricts face challenges such as high initial costs and the need for
public participation. Developing an ecodistrict requires careful planning and collaboration
between governments, businesses, and residents. However, as more cities recognize the long-
term advantages of sustainable urban planning, ecodistricts are becoming an essential model for
future urban development.

Traveling in the Future
These days, if you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight takes about 16 hours. You
also have to wait at the airport, and sometimes you have to transfer onto a different airplane. If
you add all of that extra time, the trip takes at least 20 hours. But in the future, the trip from New
York to Beijing might only take two hours.
Right now, a private company is developing something called ET3. ET3 stands for “evacuated
tube transport technology”. Here is how it works. A tube goes all the way from New York to
Beijing. The tube is only a few meters wide. Capsules move through the tube. Six people can sit
in one capsule. The capsules use electricity instead of gasoline. For international travel, the
capsules can travel at about 6,500 kilometers per hour. That is much faster than airplane — most
modern airplanes usually only fly at about 800 kilometers per hour.
So how is this possible? How can these capsules travel so fast? The answer is that there is no air
inside the tube. When airplanes fly, they have to move through the air. The air slows the
airplanes down. Because there is no air in the ET3 tubes, the capsules are able to move at a very
high speed. Besides, the capsules are quite light. They only weigh 183 kilograms.
There are other advantages to ET3. Because it uses electricity, it is quite clean. In addition, it is
much quieter than airplanes and cars. Finally, ET3 tubes and capsules don't require very much
building material.
Of course, ET3 doesn’t exist yet. The technology is still being developed. Developers still have
to solve a lot of problems. The biggest problem is that right now, ET3 would be far too
expensive. In order to make ET3 cheaper, we will need much better technology.
It is exciting to think of how ET3 will change travel in the future. Maybe someday, you will be
able to have lunch in New York and dinner in Beijing.
25. Which of the following is NOT true about travelling at present?
A. Modern planes fly at about 800 kilometers per hour.
B. We use mostly gasoline for transportation.
C. Flights make little noise thanks to modern technology.
D. Traveling takes place in the air.
26. Why is ET3 clean?
A. It is made of a clean kind of material.
B. It uses a cleaner kind of gasoline.
C. It doesn’t use gasoline or electricity.
D. It uses electricity.
27. The word “works” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _________.
A. travels B. operates C. earns money D. succeeds
28. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. There is still a lot to do before putting ET3 into operation.
B. All flights have to transfer at different cities.
C. ET3 will be used domestically.
D. Electricity used as a source of energy makes a capsule much quieter.

Customs are traditions, behaviors, and social practices that vary across different cultures. These
customs reflect a society’s values, history, and way of life. From greetings to table manners,
customs shape daily interactions and influence how people communicate and show respect.
Understanding cultural customs is important for travelers, as it helps them avoid
misunderstandings and show appreciation for local traditions.
One common custom that varies widely is greeting etiquette. In Japan, bowing is a sign of
respect, while in France, people often greet each other with a kiss on both cheeks. In some
Middle Eastern countries, a handshake accompanied by placing the right hand over the heart is a
warm gesture of welcome. Meanwhile, in Thailand, the traditional wai—a slight bow with hands
pressed together—is used to show politeness and respect.
Dining customs also differ significantly around the world. In China, it is customary to use
chopsticks, while in India, eating with the right hand is common. In Ethiopia, people often share
food from a single plate, symbolizing unity and friendship. In contrast, Western countries
typically use forks and knives, and table manners emphasize keeping elbows off the table and
chewing quietly. These customs reflect cultural attitudes toward food, community, and etiquette.
Gift-giving is another practice that holds special meaning in many cultures. In Japan, gifts are
often wrapped beautifully, as presentation is just as important as the gift itself. In some Latin
American countries, opening a gift immediately after receiving it is considered polite, while in
China, people may refuse a gift multiple times before accepting it to show humility. Such
traditions highlight the deep-rooted values of different societies and their approaches to
hospitality and generosity.

varieties reflect local cultures, histories, and influences, making English a dynamic and evolving
language. Some well-known examples include American English, British English, Indian
English, and Singaporean English. While these versions share the same foundation, they have
unique vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar rules.
One major reason for the spread of different English varieties is colonial history. When the
British Empire expanded, English was introduced to many parts of the world. Over time, local
communities adapted it to fit their own languages and traditions. For example, in Nigeria,
English includes words and expressions influenced by indigenous languages. Similarly, in the
Philippines, English has blended with Tagalog and Spanish, creating a distinct version known as
Philippine English.
Despite these differences, World Englishes allow people from diverse backgrounds to
communicate. In international business, education, and media, English serves as a common
language. While some argue that there should be a "standard" English, many linguists believe
that these varieties enrich the language and reflect its global identity. As English continues to
evolve, more unique versions will likely emerge, further shaping the way the world speaks.

Our local environment is the world right around us - the air we breathe, the water we drink, the
parks we play in, and the streets we walk on. Taking care of it is essential for our well-being and
the health of the planet.
One simple way to help is by keeping our neighborhoods clean. We can do this by not throwing
trash on the ground and using trash cans. Picking up litter when we see it is a small act that
makes a big difference. Cleaner streets also mean cleaner air because there's less dust and
pollution.
We can also save energy to help our local environment. Turning off lights when we leave a room
and using less water when we take showers or brush our teeth can lower our energy use. When
we use less energy, we reduce the pollution that harms our air and environment.
Our local parks and green spaces are essential for our well-being. We should enjoy these places
and take care of them. Picking up after ourselves, not damaging plants, and not leaving trash
behind are simple ways to keep these areas beautiful.
Preserving local wildlife is another part of taking care of our environment. We can do this by not
disturbing animals' homes and being kind to the creatures we share our space with.
Lastly, getting involved in community projects like clean-up events or tree planting can bring
people together to make our local environment even better. When we work together, we create a
stronger, healthier, and happier place to call home.
29. What does our local environment include?
🡪 It includes the air we breathe, the water we drink, the parks we play in, and the
streets we walk on.
30.How can we help keep our neighborhoods clean?

picking up litter.

-> Because saving energy reduces pollution that harms our air and
environment.
32. Where can people get involved to improve the local environment?
^ People can participate in community projects like clean-up events or tree
planting.

I’ve had my fair share of travel mishaps throughout the years, but my worst travel experience
happened during my first solo trip outside of the European Union. My trip to Turkey was
amazing, but then things went wrong hours before I was supposed to fly back home.
After packing my suitcase during the night and just before heading down to the lobby to catch
the airport shuttle, I decided to lie on the soft bed one last time. And, of course, I fell asleep. I
woke up three hours later and instantly panicked. There was no way I would make it to the
airport on time to catch my flight, and I felt helpless. I was terrified of being stuck in Turkey and
had no idea what to do.
After calling my family back home, tears running, I eventually headed down to the lobby. And
while the staff could not help me, a local approached me to ask what was wrong.
The local proceeded to help me by calling the Turkish hotline of the airline for me. To my
dismay, there was nothing they could do. But then the wonderful stranger looked up new flights
back home for me.
Thanks to the kindness of this stranger, I managed to make it home that very day. And it made

I have been on an unforgettable field trip to Ba Vi with my class. The trip was designed to show
students the authentic life of Vietnamese villages and to support the local community. During
this trip, we paid a visit to some local families who introduced us to the daily life and traditional
activities of the local villages.
The first stop was at the Ri village, where we met Mr. Duoc, who owns the tea plantation. We
had a walk around his farm and took part in the tea harvesting. Later he taught us how to roll and
dry the tea leaves.
Then we visited another village and the other host Mrs. Chin, who taught US how to cook
traditional meals. After cooking we could try the meals we made for lunch at the tropical garden.
After a short break, we could have a cycling trip along the lake, rice fields, and banana
plantations. On the way, we could enjoy the surrounding scenery and talk to local people. We
also saw what people did for a living and how the local products were made.
After the cycling trip, we moved to the third host Mrs. Chinh, who is a representative of Muong
people. She took us on a boat trip along the Da river, which was the last part of the field trip.
