Parts of Speech

Definition: Parts of speech are categories that classify words based on their function in a
sentence. Understanding them is essential to forming correct and meaningful sentences.

📌 The 8 Parts of Speech:

1. Noun – A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.


o Examples: doctor, school, book, happiness, Manila
o Types:
 Proper Noun – Maria, Jollibee
 Common Noun – city, teacher
 Abstract Noun – freedom, courage
 Collective Noun – team, class, flock
2. Pronoun – A word used in place of a noun to avoid repetition.
o Examples: he, she, they, it, who
o Types:
 Personal Pronouns – I, we, you, he
 Possessive Pronouns – his, her, their
 Relative Pronouns – who, which, that
 Demonstrative Pronouns – this, those
3. Verb – A word that shows action or a state of being.
o Examples: run, jump, is, was, have, become
o Types:
 Action Verbs – eat, write, sing
 Linking Verbs – am, is, are
 Helping Verbs – has, will, can
4. Adjective – A word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun.
o Examples: happy, blue, tall, smart, beautiful
o Example in a sentence: The tall man entered the cold room.
5. Adverb – A word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
o Examples: quickly, very, well, yesterday

o Often answers: How? When? Where? To what extent?
6. Preposition – A word that shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and
another word in the sentence.
o Examples: in, on, at, under, beside, between
o Example: The cat is under the table.
7. Conjunction – A word that connects words, phrases, or clauses.
o Examples: and, but, or, because, although
o Types:
 Coordinating – and, but, or
 Subordinating – because, although, if
8. Interjection – A word or phrase that expresses emotion or exclamation.
o Examples: Wow!, Oops!, Hey!, Yikes!
o Example in a sentence: Wow! That was amazing!
