Scientific Investigation Activity Sheet
Title: Investigating the Effect of Light on the Growth of Mung Beans
Grade Level: ____________
Name: ____________________
Date Started: ____________ Date Ended: ____________
Objective:
To investigate how light affects the growth of mung beans using the 7 steps of the scientific
method.
Materials:
• 4 plastic cups
• 40 mung beans (10 per cup)
• Garden soil
• Water
• Ruler (cm/mm)
• Marker and masking tape (for labeling)
• Dark place (e.g., box or cabinet)
• Outdoor sunny spot
The 7 Steps of the Scientific Method
1. Ask a Question
What is the effect of light on the growth of mung beans?
2. Do Background Research
- Plants need sunlight to grow through photosynthesis.
- Mung beans are often used in experiments because they germinate quickly.
3. Formulate a Hypothesis
Write your hypothesis below:
If mung beans are placed in a dark place, then they will...
4. Identify Variables
Type of Variable Description
Independent Variable Amount of light (dark vs. light)
Dependent Variable Height and appearance of mung bean
sprouts
Controlled Variables Number of seeds, amount of soil, type of
cup, amount of water, duration of growth
5. Test the Hypothesis (Experiment Steps)
• Label 2 cups “Light” and 2 cups “Dark.”
• Fill each cup with equal amounts of garden soil.
• Plant 10 mung beans in each cup.
• Water each cup with the same amount daily.
• Place the Light cups outdoors under sunlight.
• Place the Dark cups inside a box or cabinet.
• Observe and measure the plants daily for 7 days.
• Record data on the table below.

6. Analyze Results
Look at your measurements and observations. What patterns or trends did you notice?
7. Draw a Conclusion
1. Was your hypothesis correct? Why or why not?
2. Which group of plants grew taller?
3. Which group looked healthier? Why?
4. What did you learn about the importance of sunlight for plant growth?
5. What would you change if you repeated the experiment?
