SOP – PICKUP AND RUNNING 18 5/8”, 13 3/8”, 9 5/8” CASING (SPIDER
EQUIPMENT & CRANE)
Date: 12th July, 2018
People: TP, Driller and entire rig crew, forklift operator, roustabout foreman,
roustabouts, mechanic, motorman, electrician & his helper.
Equipment: Forklift, catwalk, pipe racks, all running equipment, power tongs.
Location: Catwalk, rig floor
Practice:
1. The running equipment will be from the third party, but we need to check this
equipment too. Do not use damaged running equipment.
2. Derrickman: Inspect the stabbing board. Check everything required and
complete the “Weekly Stabbing Board Inspection” form.
3. Floorman: Check the snub lines for the tongs being used (power & back up).
Make sure they are the correct color code and in good condition.
4. AD: Check the shackles to be used. Make sure they have the correct sized pins in
them, no bolts. Check that they are not bent cracked etc. Throw away anything
unusable so it can not be used again.
5. AD, forklift operator and roustabouts: Set up the pipe racks so the casing can be
easily rolled from one set over to the next and onto the catwalk. Load the casing
onto the pipe racks, clean the threads, drift and measure. Make sure the drift is
the right size. Follow JSA RO-033 for this task. Measure the casing and add up
the tally. Install any centralizers etc. as required on the racks.
6. AD, TP, forklift operator, roustabouts: Make up the shoe joint and the float collar.
This will be done well before the job.
7. Driller and floormen: Pull the wear bushing if there is one.
8. Driller, TP: Hold a safety meeting with all men involved prior to rigging up to run
casing.
9. Roustabout foreman, forklift operator, roustabouts: Transport the equipment in
the order required to the catwalk with the forklift.
10. Driller, floormen: Pick up power tongs and set them on the floor with the crane.
The small equipment can be brought up with the air hoist.
11. Driller, floormen: Change the elevator links (bales) as required. Raise the blocks
up out of the way.
12. Set the spider elevators on the rotary table with the crane.
13. Lower the blocks and attach the links to the elevators, then pick up 3 feet.
14. Install the single joint elevators with the correctly rated slings, shackles and
swivel. The slings will fit inside the link locks of the spider elevators. Driller
raises the blocks up out of the way.
15. Driller, floormen: Change the rotary inserts, remove bushings as required for the
size of casing being run. Set the base plate in place as needed.
16. Driller, floormen: Set the spider slips over hole center with the crane and secure.

17. Driller, floormen, and motorman: Hook up the air lines for the spider slips and
elevators.
18. Rig up the working platforms. Make sure they are the correct height, handrails
are in place and there is enough room to run the power tongs and back ups safely.
(Make needed changes). Check the platforms for damage prior to the job and
repair as required.
19. Driller: Resets the low stop of the BCS (Block Control System).
20. Driller, derrickman, floormen: Rig up the stabbing board. Make sure there is a
certified functioning retractable installed correctly overhead. Hook up to the air
and function test. Complete a stabbing board inspection form.
21. Driller, floormen or third party: Hang the power tongs to the air hoist, hook up
the snubbing line and rig up the hydraulic unit, connect the hoses and function
test. The tongs will not hang correctly so hold the air hoist line over with a sling
and snatch block about monkey board height. Sling to a beam by the ladder.
22. Driller, floormen: Install the correct back up tongs and correct sized jaw. Hook
up snub line. Check closely on the first connection that the back up tong will not
contact the power tongs and bend the hanger.
23. Driller, floormen: Rig up the fill up line from the trip pump. Do not fill the
casing with the fill-up hose connected to the mud pumps. Do not hook up the
hose to the standpipe manifold. Filling the casing with the top drive and a fill up
tool is safe but a hand held hose can explode or a man can lose control of it when
it is hooked up to a high volume high pressure mud pump.
24. Driller and floormen: Make up the safety valve to the correct crossover, make
sure it is open and has a lifting cap so it can be installed with the air hoist.
25. Spot the crane between the sub and the casing.
26. Roustabout (man trained for the trip tank): Make up a trip sheet and monitor the
well at all times. Keep accurate records of the returns and alert the driller if there
is any flow or if the mud is not taking the right amount of mud.
27. Driller, TP and all men involved: Have a safety meeting prior to running the
first joint of casing with ALL personnel involved, including the forklift and
crane operators. Review the TRA CS-003. Make sure that the procedure and
signals are understood.
28. Sling the crane to the float joint. Double wrap the slings and shackle the eye
back to the sling at the casing end and hook the other ends to the crane hook.
29. Pick up the shoe joint and boom over to the floor with the collar over the
mousehole. Put on the single joint elevators and put in the safety pin.
30. Floormen: Latch the SJ elevators from the blocks onto the joint.
31. Driller, floormen: Pick up with the blocks and let down with the crane. Open the
slings to allow them to slide off. Use a rope across the V-door to control the pin
end of the joint. Let it in to the table and lower the joint through the table. If the
joint will not pass the slips or table, open the slips or remove bushings as required
to allow the centralizer to pass.

32. Once the joint is in far enough, set the slips. Install a set of single joint elevators
for safety, and lower the spider elevators over the collar and latch them. Unlatch
the block’s SJ elevators.
33. Remove the second SJ elevators and RIH and set the slips at the right height. The
floormen will have to pull the block’s SJ elevators over to the V-door each time
the driller lowers the string. Install the safety set of SJ elevators. This is good
practice until there is sufficient weight to keep the slips set. Fill the joint with
mud. Unlatch the elevators and pick up to latch onto the next joint.
34. Pick up the float collar joint as above.
35. Driller, floormen: Pick up the joint to fit in the stump and stab it. Put on the
power tongs and the back up tongs and spin in low gear until you have the first
few threads in and it’s easy. Apply thread lock to the threads. Make up to the
proper torque. The back up tongs will be needed on every joint at the start of the
job until there is sufficient string weight in the slips.
36. Derrickman unlatches the single joint elevators and then the driller comes down,
stops on the derrickman’s signal. Derrickman latches the spider elevators. Do not
unlatch the single joint elevator until the casing is spun in. If the SJ elevators are
unlatched too early, the casing joint in the stump can fall over. The derrick man
latches the spider elevators after the tongs have torqued up.
37. Floormen: Remove the safety set of SJ elevators.
38. Driller picks up on the blocks and one floorman trips the spider elevators open.
39. The driller comes down. He will need to watch the elevators to see if the casing
catches when there is no string weight.
40. Driller, floormen: Fill the joint with mud. Pick up and come back down to see if
the float is working. If OK, RIH and set the slips, latch the safety SJ elevators.
41. Pick up the next joint, make up, RIH as the above steps. Continue to fill every
joint and monitor the returns.
42. Driller and floormen: Once the casing is in the hole, make up the circulating
head, and circulate.
