Before to formally start the lesson, the teacher shall ask the following
questions:
a) what is a differential?
d. presenting the new b) Why each wheel spin at different speeds?

C. Discussion of the
automotive differentials
Ring Gear
The ring gear is the large, toothed gear that connects to the
driveshaft through the pinion gear.
It transfers the rotational force from the engine (via the driveshaft) to
the differential gears and subsequently to the wheels.
Pinion gear
The pinion gear is driven by the driveshaft and transfers rotational
power to the ring gear.
It works with the ring gear to change the direction of the power from
the engine, usually from a horizontal to a vertical orientation.

Differential Case
The differential case houses the various gears within the differential
mechanism.
It connects the differential's internal gears to the axle shafts, which
then transfer power to the wheels.
Side Gears
Side gears are connected to the axle shafts and are responsible for
transferring the rotational power to the wheels. They mesh with the
pinion gears to distribute power evenly to each wheel.
Pinion Gears (Spider Gears)
The pinion gears (also known as spider gears) are smaller gears inside
the differential. They are positioned between the side gears and allow
the wheels to rotate at different speeds, which is essential when
turning.
Spider Gear Shaft (or Pin Shaft)
The spider gear shaft holds the pinion gears in place and allows them
to rotate freely. This shaft is what the pinion gears are mounted on.
Axle Shafts
The axle shafts connect the side gears to the wheels, transferring the
power from the differential to the wheels.
Bearings
Bearings support the rotating parts of the differential, such as the pinion
gear, ring gear, and axle shafts. They reduce friction and allow smooth
rotation.
Carrier (or Differential Carrier)
The carrier holds the side gears and spider gears inside the differential
case and enables them to rotate as needed when the vehicle is turning.
DIFFERENTIAL HOUSING
Protect the internal components from damage caused of impact during
operation
GROUP ACTIVITY
G. ANALYSIS How These Parts Work Together?
When you drive, the engine sends power through the driveshaft, which
rotates the pinion gear. The pinion gear meshes with the ring gear,
which changes the direction of the power to the differential case. Inside
the differential case, the spider gears and side gears allow the two
wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds (necessary when
turning). The axle shafts then transfer the power to the wheels, which
ultimately propel the vehicle forward.
