Dear Dr. Nelson,

1 I’ve been having some scary experiences lately. I often wake

up in the middle of the night. It feels like I’m fully awake, but 3

I’m unable to speak or move my body. What’s happening to me?

Emma

Dear Emma, 6

You seem to be experiencing sleep *paralysis. During sleep,

your body becomes very relaxed. This prevents it from moving

and acting out your dreams. However, sometimes your mind 9

wakes up before your body does. When this happens, you may

find yourself unable to move or speak. You might even see or

hear things that aren’t really there. Don’t worry, though. Sleep 12

paralysis usually only lasts for a few seconds or minutes.

To prevent sleep paralysis, try to follow a regular sleep

schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every 15

day. Also, since sleeping on your back can make sleep paralysis

more likely to happen, try a different sleeping position. Finally,

do relaxing activities before bed, like taking a bath or reading. 18

I hope these tips help you sleep more peacefully!

actions like this helps you reach your goal.

Q What is the writer’s opinion in the passage?

③ It is important to change goals according to the situation.
④ Setting specific goals is required to achieve positive results.

1 Dear Diary,

Today, I visited the Harvard Art Museums with my

class. There, we saw a room full of cabinets. Inside 3

each cabinet, there were tiny glass bottles containing

*pigments of many colors. I learned that these

pigments were mixed with things like nut oil or eggs 6

to make paint.

The collection we saw is called the Forbes Pigment

Collection. It was started in the 1920s by Edward 9

Forbes. He traveled the world to collect pigments.

When people found out about his project, they began

sending him pigments from everywhere. Now, there 12

are more than 2,700 pigments in the collection!

I heard some interesting stories about them. For

example, Indian Yellow is a color that was used in 15

South Asia and Europe. Believe it or not, it was made

from dried cow pee! Emerald Green was used in the

paintings of Vincent van Gogh. But it included 18

a very dangerous ingredient that could be used

as a poison for rats. Luckily, paint colors are

made differently today. 21

It was so much fun to learn about the history

of pigments!

*pigment: something that gives color to things like paint or dye
