In many ahadith, the Prophet Muhammed(S) emphasized and encouraged the Muslims to attend funeral ceremonies. Every Muslim male
should try his best to fulfill his duty towards the deceased. If no one from the whole of the Muslim Community offers the Janazah Prayers, then
the whole community will be considered sinful in the sight of Allah(SWT). If some of the people offer the Janazah prayer then the whole
community will be saved from the anger of Allah(SWT). There are 4 Takbeers in funeral prayer in Islam.
(Sahih Bukhari, Vol. 2, Hadith #337).

(1a) 1. Facing Qiblah, make Intention (Niyyah) for "O Allah shower Your Blessings on Muhammad(S), as
Salaatul Janazah upon the deceased male or female You did shower Your Blessings on Ibraheem(A) and
in order to please Allah (SWT). Without Iqaamah the descendants of Ibraheem(A), You are the Praise-
the Imam will recite Takbeer. You will then raise your worthy, the Glorious. O Allah, Glorify Muhammad() and
hands between the shoulders & ears (1a) and recite the descendants of Muhammed(S), as You did Glorify
Takbeer: Ibraheem(A) and the descendants of Ibraheem(A), You

‫�ُ ﺃ َ ْﻛﺑَﺭ‬
are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious. "
‫ﱣ‬ 3. Then say Takbeer: Alaahu-Akbar, {Raise hands as
Al-laahu Akbar shown in position 1a and then return to position 1b. Hanifi:
"Allah is the Great" Hands are not raised, kept in same position as 1b}. Then
say the Dua for the Deceased:
Fold the arms, right hand over left (1b) and {according
(1b) to Hanafi you read any Du'a such as below}. {According ‫ﻏﺎﺋِ ِﺑﻧَﺎ‬ َ ‫ﺍﻟﻠﱠ ُﻬ ﱠﻡ ﺍ ْﻏ ِﻔ ْﺭ ِﻟ َﺣ ِﻳّﻧَﺎ َﻭ َﻣ ِﻳّﺗِﻧَﺎ َﻭﺷَﺎ ِﻫ ِﺩﻧَﺎ َﻭ‬
to Shafi, Hanbali, and Maliki it is mandatory to recite
Surat al-Fatiha}. ‫ﺻ ِﻐ ِﻳﺭﻧَﺎ َﻭ َﻛﺑِ ِﻳﺭﻧَﺎ َﻭ َﺫﻛ َِﺭﻧَﺎ َﻭﺃ ُ ْﻧﺛَﺎﻧَﺎ‬
َ ‫َﻭ‬
‫ﺳﻼَ ِﻡ‬ ْ ‫ﺍﻹ‬ ِ ‫ﻋﻠَﻰ‬ َ ‫ﺍﻟﻠﱠ ُﻬ ﱠﻡ َﻣ ْﻥ ﺃَﺣْ ﻳَ ْﻳﺗَﻪُ ِﻣﻧﱠﺎ ﻓَﺄَﺣْ ِﻳ ِﻪ‬
‫ﺎﻥ‬
ِ ‫ﺍﻹﻳ َﻣ‬ ِ ‫ﻋﻠَﻰ‬ َ ُ‫َﻭ َﻣ ْﻥ ﺗ َ َﻭﻓﱠ ْﻳﺗَﻪُ ِﻣﻧﱠﺎ ﻓَﺗ َ َﻭﻓﱠﻪ‬
ُ‫ﺍﻟﻠﱠ ُﻬ ﱠﻡ ﻻَ ﺗَﺣْ ِﺭ ْﻣﻧَﺎ ﺃَﺟْ َﺭﻩُ َﻭﻻَ ﺗ ُ ِﺿﻠﱠﻧَﺎ ﺑَ ْﻌ َﺩﻩ‬
Sub-haa-nakal-laah-hum-ma wa bihamdika
Al-laah-hum-magh-fir lee-hay-yinaa wa may-yiti-
wa-ta-baara-kasmuka wa-ta-'aala jad-duka wa
naa, wa shahididinaa wa ghaa-'ibinaa wa
jal-la thanaa-uka wa laa-ilaaha ghayruk sagheerinaa wa-kabeerinaa, wa z(th)a-karinaa
"Glory be to You, o Lord, all Praises are due wa unthaana. Al-laah-hu-ma man aah'yaytuhu
unto You, and blessed is Your name and high is min-naa fa-ah' yihee 'alal Islam, wa man
Your majesty and Your praises are elevated and ta-waf-faytahu min-naa fata waf-fahu 'alal
none is worthy of worship but You." eeman allaahumma laa taḥrimnaa ajrahu, wa
laa tuḍillanaa ba‛dah.
2. Then say Takbeer: Alaahu-Akbar, {Raise hands as "O Allah, forgive our people who are still alive and
shown in position 1a and then return to position 1b. Hanifi: those who have passed away, forgive those who
Hands are not raised, kept in same position as 1b}. Then are present here and those who are absent,
recite Assalatul-Ibrahimiyah (Salutations on The Prophet forgive our young and elderly, forgive our males
(S) (Durood-e-Ibrahim). All Madhabs agree upon this: and females. O Allah, the one whom You wish to
keep alive from among us make him live accord-
‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ﺁ ِﻝ ُﻣ َﺣ ﱠﻣ ٍﺩ‬ َ ‫ َﻭ‬،ٍ‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ُﻣ َﺣ ﱠﻣﺩ‬ َ ‫ﺍﻟﻠﱠ ُﻬ ﱠﻡ‬
َ ‫ﺻ ِ ّﻝ‬ ing to Islam, and anyone whom You wish to die
from among us, let him die in the state of Iman
‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ﺁ ِﻝ ِﺇﺑ َْﺭﺍ ِﻫﻳ َﻡ‬ َ ‫ َﻭ‬،‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ِﺇﺑ َْﺭﺍ ِﻫﻳ َﻡ‬َ َ‫ﺻﻠﱠﻳْﺕ‬ َ ‫َﻛ َﻣﺎ‬ (Belief). O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward
‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ُﻣ َﺣ ﱠﻣ ٍﺩ‬ َ ‫ﺍﻟﻠﱠ ُﻬ ﱠﻡ َﺑَ ِﺎﺭ ْﻙ‬،ٌ‫ﺇِﻧﱠﻙَ َﺣ ِﻣﻳ ٌﺩ َﻣ ِﺟﻳﺩ‬ and do not let us stray, after him."

‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ِﺇﺑ َْﺭﺍ ِﻫﻳ َﻡ‬ َ َ‫ﺎﺭ ْﻛﺕ‬ َ َ‫ َﻛ َﻣﺎ ﺑ‬،ٍ‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ﺁ ِﻝ ُﻣ َﺣ ﱠﻣﺩ‬ َ ‫َﻭ‬ (4a)
4. Then say Takbeer: Al-laahu-Akbar, {Raise hands as
shown in position 1a and then return to position 1b.
‫ ﺇِﻧﱠﻙَ َﺣ ِﻣﻳ ٌﺩ َﻣ ِﺟﻳﺩ‬،‫ﻋﻠَﻰ ﺁ ِﻝ ﺇِﺑ َْﺭﺍ ِﻫﻳ َﻡ‬ َ ‫َﻭ‬ Hanifi: Hands are not raised, kept in same position as
Al-laah hum-ma sal-li 'alaa Muhammadi(n)w 1b}. Then say:
wa-'alaa aali Muhammadin, kamaa sal-layta
'alaa Ibraheema wa 'alaa aali Ibraheema, in
ِ َ ‫ﻋﻠَ ْﻳﻛُﻡ َﻭ َﺭﺣْ َﻣﺔُ ﺍ‬
� َ ‫ﺍَﻟ‬
َ ‫ﺳﻼ ُﻡ‬
naka hameedum majeed. Al-laahum-ma baarik As-salaamu alaykum wa rah-matullaah
'alaa Muhammadi(n)w wa-'alaa aali Muhamma- "Peace upon you, and the mercy of Allah"
din, kamaa barakta 'alaa Ibraheema wa'alaa aali once whilst turning your head to the right (4a).
Ibraheema, in-naka hameedum majeed. {Hanafi: Repeat, this time turning the head to the left}.
All conditions for regular Salah are required for Salatul Janazah such as Cleanliness (Tahara), clean clothes, and being in the state of Wudu. The Imam should stand level with
the head and shoulders of the dead body of a male, and should stand level with the abdomen of a female body. There is no fixed time for offering this prayer however Makruh
times must be avoided for example, Sunrise (Zawaal) and Sunset. Janazah Salah is performed standing up, there is no Ruku, Sajdh, etc. There is also no Athan or Iqamah.
