Brief Notes on Listening by Robin Sharma

Robin Sharma begins his work Listening by writing that it is like an art which makes people

feel special, but if one is not listened to in their workplace then is, when talent leaves an

organization it is because they did not feel special. The core reason for a person leaving an

organisation is that they thought that the authoritative one did not listen to them enough. The cause

of the leaving is even more explained by Sharma that listening always mediates as a two way

communitaion and a way of giving and getting respect, but here the authoritative one did not respect

the other and so talent leaves an organization. He also states when both listen is only when data is

gathered and then is also when everything will improve. Sharma also states brilliant performers are

brilliant because they listen keenly and so their performances are great in whatever they do.

Sharma then asks the reader from today to decide to listen keenly and not be diverted. He

also says not to rehearse their answers or replies while the other person is still speaking. He also

says not to check their emails or search for text messages while another person was talking. This

may in many ways could have been said to the current generation, since they spend more time with

their gadgets such as their cellular phones than to listen keenly to the speaker who is speaking.

Sharma says that as a listener one has to do both which is to listen and hear and it is when the

listener is within the thoughts processes of the person who is speaking.

Sharma in the end states that everyone has a voice and so all crave to be heard and when one

does keenly listen is only when one can watch greater things unfold in front of their eyes.
