Diesel Tank For Fire Fighting Pump-NFPA 20

The document outlines the requirements for diesel fuel supply tanks for fire pump diesel engines, including specifications for tank size, construction, and connections. It specifies that tanks must be above ground, securely mounted, and designed to hold at least 1 gallon per horsepower plus allowances for expansion and sump. Additionally, it references NFPA standards for installation and maintenance of these tanks.

DIESEL TANK

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
The fuel supply tank and fuel shall be reserved exclusively for the fire pump diesel engine.

There shall be a separate fuel supply tank for each engine. There shall be a separate fuel supply
and return line for each engine. Tanks shall be single wall or double wall, while using Single-wall
fuel tanks, it shall be enclosed with a wall, curb, or dike sufficient to hold the enre capacity of
the tank.

Tanks used in accordance with the rules NFPA20 shall be limited in size to 1320 gal, for situaons
where using fuel tanks exceeds 1320 gal, the requirements of NFPA 37 shall apply. We’ll only
discuss NFPA 20 here.

Tanks shall be securely mounted on noncombusble supports.

ENGR. SYED SAAD ALI

FUEL SUPPLY TANK CAPACITY:

Fuel supply tank(s) shall have a capacity at least equal to 1 gallon per hp, plus 5 percent volume
for expansion and 5 percent volume for sump.

Example on diesel tank sizing:

According to NFPA 20 Fuel supply tank shall have a capacity at least equal to 1 gal/hp, plus 5%
volume for expansion & 5% volume for sump.

Problem:

What is the required fuel tank capacity for a 120 hp engine-driven fire pump?

Soluon:

Based on above rule, the inial calculaons are:

1 gal/hp x 120 hp = 120 gal

Total capacity is determined by adding the allowances for fuel expansion and sump to the
answer:

120 + (120 x (5% + 5%)) = 120 + 12 = 132 gal

Therefore, the minimum size fuel tank for a 120 hp engine-driven fire pump is 132 gal.

FUEL SUPPLY TANK LOCATION:

Diesel fuel supply tanks shall be located above ground and shall not be buried.

www.linkedin.com/in/engrsyedsaadali
Diesel fuel storage tanks preferably should be located inside the pump room or pump house,
and the fill and vent lines should be extended outdoors.

TANK CONNECTIONS:
Each tank shall have the following connecons:

1) Fill connecon

Fill pipes shall enter the top of the tank and shall terminate within 6 in. of the botom of the
tank.

2) Drain connecon

Shall be located in the lowest point of the tank and size of 1 in. NPT.
ENGR. SYED SAAD ALI

3) Vent connecon
 Normal vents shall be 2 in. NPT or sized according to ANSI/UL 142.
 As an alternave, the normal vent can be at least as large as the largest filling
or withdrawal connecon, but in no case shall it be less than 11∕4 in. nominal inside
diameter.
4) Engine supply connecon

The fuel supply pipe connecon shall be located on a side of the tank so that 5 percent of the
tank volume provides a sump volume not usable by the engine.

The tank connecon shall be no smaller than the fuel supply piping to the engine.

5) Engine return connecon

The tank connecon shall be no smaller than the fuel return piping from the engine.

6) Fuel level switch connecon

The fuel tank shall have one 2 in. NPT threaded port in the top, near the center, of the tank to
accommodate the low fuel level switch.

7) Acve fuel maintenance return connecon

The fuel tank shall have one minimum 1 in. NPT threaded port in the top of the tank to
accommodate the connecon of a line for the return fuel from an acve fuel maintenance
system.

Where there is not an acve fuel system installed, a plug shall be installed in this connecon.
