The document explains the concept of functions and function machines, emphasizing that each input has a single output and how to express mathematical operations in both function machine and algebraic forms. It includes examples of calculating outputs from inputs, finding inverse functions, and creating function machines for real-life scenarios. Additionally, it discusses the validity of functions and provides exercises to reinforce understanding.

© Understand that a function is a relationship where each input has a single
output.
© Generate outputs from a given function and identify inputs from a given
output by considering inverse operations (including fractions).
© Understand that a situation can be represented either in words or as
alinear function in two variables (of the form y= mmx + c), and move
between the two representations.
Function machines
In Stage 7, you looked at how function machines carry out mathematical
operations. A number is entered (the input) and the function machine
calculates an answer (the output)
For example:
In Divide by 3 Add a out
In this case, the function is ‘divide by 3 and then add 4’.
An important property of a function is that one input value only
produces one output value
For example, the machine shown below is not an example of a
function machine:
In Square root Subtract 1 —> out

In Subtract 2 Divide by 2 > Out |
If the output is 3, calculate the input.
‘The inverse function will help to solve this problem.
Working backwards, we must work out what mathematical
operation undoes the original function. The opposite of ‘division’
is ‘multiplication’, while the opposite of ‘subtraction’ is ‘additi
The original function can therefore be reversed as follows:
in x Add2 ‘Multiply by 2 out
Therefore inserting $ as the output gives:
7 << ads2
Therefore if 3 is the output, 7 was the input.

© Express the equation y=5x-+3 as a function machine.
Here, whatever the input x, itis multiplied by 5 and then 3 is
added to it to produce the y-value. Therefore x is the input
