CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
The main purpose of industrial attachment was solve the problem of lack of adequate practical
skills which prepared me for employment in industries. The scheme exposes me to the industry
base skills necessary for smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. It affords
students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being familiarized and exposed to the needed
experience in the society and of handling machinery and equipment which are usually not
available in my institution of study.Succcessful industrial attachments foster an experimental
learning process that not only promote career preparation but provides opportunities for learners
to develop skills necessary to become leaders in their chosen professions.

One of the primary goals of the industrial attachment is to help students integrate leadership
development to into experimental learning process.

2.8 OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT
The industrial attachment is aimed at nurturing student’s skills; academically, socially or even
spiritually.

The industrial attachment prepares a student to being a responsible staff and worker in future, it
gives one an opportunity to interact with different people hence knowing how to handle them.

Some of the essential objectives of the industrial attachment are as follows

 To assess the interest of the student in the real working environment.

 To expose the students to work methods not taught in the University and to provide
access to products equipment not commonly available in the environment of the
University.
 To provide the students with an opportunity to apply knowledge in the real work
situation, thereby closing the gap between University work and the actual practice.
 To make the transition from school to the world of work smoothly and to enhance student
contacts for job placement.
 To enlist and strengthen employers involvement in institutional activities and in the entire
educational process of preparing the students for employment in the industry.
 To enhance the industry´s satisfaction with the graduate of the Faculty in particular and
the University at large.

CHAPTER THREE

3.0 WORK ACTIVITIES

 Operation and maintenance
 End user support
 Information system support
 ITS training

3.1 WORK PROGRAMME

There was no specific work program assigned instead each day my colleague and I were
assigned different tasks to perform either together or individually.

During my stay at the ITS department I learned and equipped myself with skills and technical
know-how. I carried activities in sections of ITS department which include:

 VOIP configuration and installation

 Networking
 Network installation
 Computer repair and maintenance
 Network security
 Network quotation and estimation
 Transfer of IT assets from one office to the within the department.
 Software installation.
 Resetting and assigning new IP address to the gadgets
 Monitoring access points of network within the campus.
 Crimping and recrimping of LAN cables.
 Configuration of networking gadgets such access points, Nano beams, Nano stations,
MantBox and SXTs.
 Punching down the keystone jacks.

8
3.2 DEVICES USED IN THE ORGANISATION

ROUTERS-To connect the school to other networks.

SERVERS-The organization uses various servers as follows:-

 File server-this stores user’s data files

 Print server-manages the printer’s that are connected to the network and the printing of
the user’s documents on the networked printers.
 Database servers-manages common databases for the network, handling all data storage
and database management and request for data.
 Web server-this handles many communication functions for the network such as emails,
remote access and internet

ACCESS POINTS

This allows wireless devices to connect to the network

SWITCHES

Switches are used in sharing the network among many devices and they appear in many types
depending on the number of ports.

NANO BEAMS/NANO STATIONS/SXT

These are devices which are used to enable wireless connection for the devices such as
computers, laptops and smartphones.

POE

This is a device that works with the technology that lets network cables (LANs) carry electrical
energy, thus making the network installation flexible and reliable.

9
3.3 ACTIVITIS PERFORMED.
I was to take part in installing networks .During my attachment in networking section, I majorly
dealt with the following areas:-

 Connection of computers to the network media and equipment.

 Connection and sharing such as printers and storage device.
 Networking software and hardware maintenance such LAN cables.
 Troubleshooting of the network problems such non-functional points, faulty cables,
damaged network interface card (NIC)
 VOIP configuration.
 Connecting client and staff phones to WIFI.
 Installing the access points for wireless use by the end-users.

 Punching down cables to keystone jack.
 Configuration of MantBox networking device providing point to point network
connection.

10
3.4 COMMON NETWORKING TOPOLOGIES
Common topologies are:-

A bus network - all nodes are connected to a common medium by along this medium .This was
the layout used in the original Ethernet.

A star network - all nodes are connected to a special central node .This is the typical layout
found in a wireless client connects to the central wireless access point.

A ring network - each node is connected to its left and right neighbor node such that all nodes are
connected and that each other node by traversing nodes left or rightwards

CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 CONCLUSION
The period of industrial attachment with ITS administration was immeasurably valuable
experience which natured the students into a more capable professional. Skills have been gained
technically, professionally and socially. This training has helped me to gain more technical
knowledge and insightful experiences in a real working environment.

There were adequate opportunities to put theories and principles learnt in the undergraduate
courses at the Terige Hgh School

A great interaction and good rapport with ITS staff was the best thing ever as it created a feeling
of consideration to take part in any activity even though you are a student and get free in asking
for clarification on the parts that are somehow difficult.

Familiarization with Linux operating system is something worth appreciating and helping in
offering assistance on services of printing and photocopying to staff and other clients the
techniques I never had practically.

The 8-week industrial attachment at UEAB the department of information technology services
department has indeed been a fruitful and developing experience.

12
4.1 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

 Lack of practical knowledge and exposure in dealing with some of the equipment such as
printer’s problem made it difficult in solving problem.
 Difficult in solving problem in areas I was not given privilege and the clients expected
me to be of help to them.
 Difficulty in solving network problem where it entails communication with internet
service providers.
 I also faced the challenge of unwelcoming staff members who were to be assisted on IT
problem in departments.
 There was also a challenge inadequate IT tools which necessitated carrying heavy tools
from one point to another.

13
4.2 RECOMENDATION

 The ITS conduct more training to the end users of the IT software and the hardware.
The organization should conduct more training to users so that they can be able to use the
systems efficiently.

 The organization should impress the idea of shared values.

This idea will enhance more interaction of staff members and share different skills that
they are specialists in.

 The ITS look for a backup power supply for example having every office connected to
the UPS.
This will be very important in ensuring continued service delivery to the users. The ITS
department also should have an idea of increasing the generators to various sections of
the organization so as to prevent interruptions in case of electricity blackout.

 Device a means of removing obstructions that prevents the wireless devices facing the
cell tower depriving them of strong signals thus giving problem to the end users of the IT
services.
The ITS department should find a way of removing trees and other obstructions that
hinders the networking devices like Nano beams Nano stations and SXT from the
communications with the tower.
