DA I

Urban Street Furniture Design Using Concrete and/or Steel

CO2: Ability to Apply concrete as a versatile material in different contexts and innovatively in
simple projects.

BL6: Create

Objective:
To design an innovative piece of urban street furniture using concrete and/or steel, focusing
on modularity, flexibility, and portability. The concept should reflect potential for mass
production and be developed to an early-stage proof-of-concept (TRL 3 or higher).

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this assignment, students will be able to:
1. Understand the design, function, and socio-cultural role of urban street furniture.
2. Analyse the use of concrete and steel in modular public infrastructure.
3. Conceptually design a street furniture piece that is scalable, transportable, and
manufacturable.
4. Reflect on the innovation potential and early-stage feasibility (TRL) of their design.

Materials Focus:
 Primary: Concrete and/or Steel
 Optional: Complementary materials like wood, recycled plastics, or composite panels
(with justification)

Submission Format:
 Single PDF of 2 A3 size sheets including the following:

o Research findings with image references

o Sketches or CAD views
o Description of modular/portable design strategy
o Brief write-up on TRL level and patent potential
Evaluation Criteria:

Criteria Weightage

Relevance of research and case studies 20%

Creativity and originality 25%

Feasibility and modularity of design 25%

Visual presentation 20%

Innovation/TRL reflection 10% (bonus if compelling)

What is TRL (Technology Readiness Level)?

Technology Readiness Levels are a way of measuring the maturity of a technology or design
concept. For this exercise:

 TRL 1–2: Purely conceptual, with theoretical ideas or academic research

 TRL 3: Proof of concept, validated through early sketches, CAD drawings, or small-
scale mock-ups

 TRL 4–5: Bench-scale models or testing in lab conditions

 TRL 6+: Real-world prototypes and production-ready technologies

In this assignment, you are expected to reach TRL 3 — your design should be clearly
thought-out, visualized, and demonstrate feasibility, even if only at a conceptual level.

Note:
 No physical models required
 You are free to use software such as SketchUp, Blender, Canva, hand drawn sketches,
AutoCAD, etc.
 Focus on clarity of thought, not software perfection
 Submission deadline as per VTOP
