CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
We are interested in carrying out a project work on the analysis and design of an
earthquake resistant building, which is one of the topics recommended by the
department of civil engineering for carrying out a project work on, for the fulfillment
of the bachelor's in Civil Engineering program.

Nepal is in the seismic zone and its prone earthquakes, we have experienced several
earthquakes in the past, the most recent one being the 12 th Baishakh 2072 BS which
epicenter was Barkpark, Gorkha with a devastating 7.8 Ritcher scale. Proper Analysis
and safe design of structures, therefore carries great importance which is the main
reason why we proposed to perform a project on seismic resistant building design.

The design of the building will be based on the detailed plans of a proposed RCC
Building provided by the project supervisor. The design shall include the design of the
following components;

 Foundation
 Basement Wall
 Beams
 Columns
 Slabs
 Lateral load resisting system
 Staircase

1.1 OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the project are listed below;

 To achieve a practical knowledge on structural analysis, design and detailing of

structural components using principles of seismic resistant design.
 To analyze the seismic response of the building including dynamic parameters to
draw detail structural drawings using AutoCAD.
 Partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of bachelor of engineering in
civil engineering
