Stay Hydrated

What happened?
Recently, several illness cases were reported due to heat and lack of hydration as shown below:

● A worker felt dizzy and had muscle cramps in his left leg due to not drinking enough water.
● Another worker felt dizzy and fell down stairs (2.2 feet) and landed on the ground on his hands.
● Two other workers felt dizzy due to blood pressure and not drinking enough water.
Consequences:
● Illness/dehydration
o Heat exhaustion/stress
o Heat stroke
o Heat cramps
● Failure of organs (i.e. kidney stones)
● Blood pressure issue

Why did it happen?


● Working outdoors in direct sunlight.
● Wearing unnecessary personal protective
equipment (PPE) which raise the body
temperature.
● Not drinking enough water/ electrolytes.
● Sweating.
● Not being able to get rid of toxins.

What should be done to prevent


reoccurrence?
● Reduce exposure to direct sunlight.
● Take frequent breaks in a shaded area.
● Follow the heat index card.
● Rotate employees more frequent during the day to avoid sun-related illnesses or heat exhaustion.
● Drink water/electrolytes – take regular drink breaks.
● Make it habit to carry a bottle of water/electrolytes.
● Eat food with high water content (i.e. fruits and vegetables).
● Report immediately whenever there is a potential of fatigue.

D&WO Management massage:


With the increase reported illness cases, D&WO management urge all key personnel to instruct their workers
(especially those working outdoors or in heat areas) to provide those workers with plenty of electrolytes to
help them stay hydrated as summer is almost here and the humidity is getting worse.

This alert shall be communicated to everyone in order to improve the overall HSE in our organizations.
