Get ’Em While You Can! RITTER & STARK SX-1
MODULAR TACTICAL RIFLE
It’s no secret that guns are central to the discourse surrounding this presi-
dential election. It’s a pivotal one for 2nd Amendment supporters and op-
ponents. There is so much freedom at stake, from threats of dangerous and
unconstitutional executive orders, to Australian-style “buyback” programs and
the appointing of Supreme Court justices that none of us can afford to sit at
home on Election Day. In case things go south and Hillary wins the presi-
dency, it’s not a bad idea to go ahead and pull the trigger on that gun you’ve
been eyeing for a while. If you haven’t had your sights set on a particular gun,
here are a few consider, along with some new ammunition.
Chassis guns are incredibly hot at the moment. With more and more guns pro-
ducing freaky small group at long distances, the race is on to create the most
accurate rifle out there, and chassis guns are leading the way. If you’ve never
tried it, ringing steel at 500 yards and longer is a pretty rewarding experience.

LOCKHART TACTICAL
UBS-12 SHOTGUN

The “saying one is none, and two is one” is a mantra adopted

by the preparedness community and can apply to many things
in life. It stresses the importance of redundancy in everyday
things, especially when it comes to being prepared for when
Mr. Murphy shows up. Having one gun in a firefight is a great
place to start, but what do you do when your main weapon
goes down? If you don’t have a backup, prayer is a good op-
tion. If you do have a backup, you’d better get it into action.
The UBS-12 by Lockhart Tactical is designed to give users
another option when their primary rifle goes belly-up.
The UBS-12 is a pump-action shotgun that attaches under
the barrel of a rifle, be it an AR-15, AK-47 or almost any
rifle with 10 Picatinny rails slots on the underside of the hand-
guard. It holds 2+1 of 12-gauge ammunition that could bail
you out in a pinch. It weighs 4.6 pounds, is 16 inches in overall
lengths, with a barrel length of 8.5 inches. It fires 2¾- and
3-inch shells. You attach the mount to your rail then the shot-
gun to the mount. Price is set at $795.

POLYCASE SPORT UTILITY AMMO

If polymer pistols irked you, what do you make of polymer ammo?
Before you judge, you owe it to yourself to see what polymer-
copper matrix injection-molded projectiles have to offer.
PolyCase’s newest ammunition is called Sport Utility
Ammo, which is a nod to its intended function as a do-all
training round that’s lead-free and ideal for use indoors. Poly-
Case claims that safe splatter distance is measured in feet rath-
er than yards because the projectile disintegrates on contact
with a hard surface. Like with PolyCase’s Inceptor ARX self-
defense loads, the light-for-caliber bullets offer sizzling veloci-
ties and absolute minimum recoil. For example, the 9mm bul-
let weighs 65 grains and leaves the muzzle at roughly 1,525 fps.
The 130-grain .45 ACP load boasts 1,210 fps. All Sport Utility
Ammo is simple FMJ-style and is intended as a training round
for those carrying the ARX line in a concealed carry weapon.
Price ranges from $17.99 (.380 and 9mm), $21.99 (.38 Special),
$23.99 (.40 S&W) and $25.99 (.45 ACP).
I can personally attest to how much fun this ammo is with
its negligible recoil, even in .40 with a polymer-framed gun.
You ought to try a box.

Compared to short-barreled .223 ARs, pistol-caliber
ARs with “short” barrels improve the performance of

quick word on arm braces. As of this writing, the
A BATFE has declared that attaching one of these
braces to your pistol does not alter the legal definition
of that firearm, as in it is still a pistol even if it doesn’t
look like it. A lot of people thought the ATF would
change their mind about that, find any excuse to restrict
or outlaw the braces that they could. Such has not been
the case.
A quick check of the new braces coming from SB Tac-
tical just approved by the ATF, including the above side-
folding SBT5K and a sexy collapsible model meant for
the SIG MPX and AR platform, shows that these braces
are here to stay. However, the BATFE has changed their
mind about something.
In the opinion of the ATF, if you use one of these
braces in a manner in which it was not designed (i.e.
as a stock) it would then be illegal (which is the ex-
act opposite of what they first stated when approving
these braces). Currently the opinion of the BATFE is
that if you “shoulder” a brace you have redesigned the
handgun to which it is affixed, which is illegal. Hold
your handgun one way and you’re legal, hold it another
and you’re a felon, according to the current opinion
letter from the head of the ATF’s Firearm Technology
Branch.
However, I would like to state that there is no legal
definition of “shouldering”, and I will leave it up to you
readers to theorize exactly what kind of evidence the
government would need to present in a trial to prove
their case. A simple cheek weld with the brace, such

CZ Scorpion EVO 3 S1
The CZ Scorpion EVO 3 A1 was introduced in 2009,
and as a submachine it has been very successful. The
Scorpion SMG is currently in use by military and police
forces in eight countries. Last year CZ USA (www.cz-usa.
com) introduced a pistol version of this gun, the Scor-
pion EVO 3 S1. Scorpion EVO 3 A1 is the designation
of the select-fire submachinegun, and the “S1” indicates
semi-auto only function. Apart from the lack of a stock
or select-fire capability, the EVO 3 S1 pistol is identical to
its SMG brother.
This is a straight blowback design with a 7¾-inch
(196mm) barrel tipped with a proprietary flash hider. New
(2016) models feature 1/2"x28 threads on the muzzle to
accept common accessories. The entire frame of the pistol
is fiber-reinforced polymer, and it weighs just 5 lbs. empty.
Yes, you read that right; the rear of the receiver is two
polymer halves that are connected by screws. When I
first started examining the Scorpion I wasn’t sure how
to react to its construction. A screwed-together polymer
shell? It took me a while to realize that the Scorpion
is the modern equivalent of the Sten SMG in that it is
made as efficiently and simply as possible to do its job—
it’s just made using modern materials and manufacturing
techniques. The Scorpion EVO 3 is not any more com-

Ask the
Gunsmith
PUSHBUTTON SAFETY

Q I recently bought a Marlin 336 in .30-30 for deer. I like

it and it shoots well. My buddies saw the gun and started
giving me grief about the pushbutton safety. What gives?
Why do guys get so worked up over the safety button? It makes
sense to me.

A
Basically tradition. Exposed hammer guns like the older
Marlins and Winchesters relied on a half-cock or safety
notch on the hammer and many older shooters, like me
thought that was quite adequate. However, there were some
lawsuits and almost every maker of exposed hammer guns was
forced to come up with an additional safety. It definitely works,
but the idea of being forced to have this additional device on the
gun as well as the aesthetics of it just rub a lot of guys the wrong
way. Fifty years from now, probably no one will care as the old
guys like your buddies and I will long since have passed on.

FILING FRONT SIGHTS

Q I have a 1911 and have done or had other people do a fair

amount of work on it. Recently a good friend who is a
machinist milled the slide and installed an adjustable rear
sight as well as a dovetailed front sight blade. The machine work
was great and I am delighted with the way my 1911 looks. My
problem is sighting the pistol in. Before I go out to the range and
start filing on the front sight, I thought I had best ask you how
you go about it. I would hate to ruin the front sight by taking off
too much metal.

A
Filing in a front sight is not or should not be a prob-
lem. Make sure you have ammo of the type you plan on
shooting most. Remember, different bullet weights and
velocities will impact at different points on the target. Also,
decide upon the range at which you’ll sight the pistol in. I al-
most always sight my handguns in at 25 yards.
You’ll need a sandbag or two on which to rest the pistol as
well as a good, sharp, clean cutting, 8-inch smooth cut flat file
and a file card or cleaner. You may also need a brass drift punch
and hammer to adjust the windage of the dovetail front sight.
Begin by bottoming out the rear sight and then counting
the clicks until you have reached the maximum elevation. Di-
vide that by two and count down that number of clicks. You
now have the rear sight centered in terms of elevation. Use the
same procedure for your rear sight windage adjustment.
You should put lots of paper on the target frame above and
below your bullseye target. Using the sandbag rest, fire three
shots at the target bull. More often than not, your front sight
being so tall the shots will impact well below the target. Now
it’s just a matter of filing the front sight down to bring the shot
group up and on to the target. After each filing, be sure to check
the target by firing three more rounds. You just repeat the process
until you have the pistol sighted in. Generally that’s all it’ll take.

NRA SUMMER GUNSMITHING

Q Have you ever had any experience with the NRA Summer
Gunsmithing Programs? Would you recommend them for
someone looking for gunsmithing instruction?

A Over the years, I’ve taken a number of different NRA

Summer Gunsmithing courses. All of the ones I’ve tak-
en have been excellent and well worth the time and cost.
I would strongly encourage anyone interested in gunsmithing
to consider taking some of these great courses. [Cont. to page 29]

M1 + BLANKS

Q My American Legion post has a dozen or so M1 Ga-

rands we use for ceremonial salutes. One of the problems
we have had with these rifles is getting them to function
properly and reliably. We do have blank firing adapters on the
rifles and we have or at least we think we have good quality
blanks we got from the Army. Still, we have situations where
the rifles will not feed or sometimes will not eject. Have you
ever run into these problems with the Garand?

A Yes. Over the years I’ve worked on a lot of Legion and

VFW Garands. More often than not, if the rifle is used
with good blank ammo and has a properly installed
blank firing adapter, the cause of malfunctions is either poor
maintenance or lack of lubrication or a combination of both.
Lots of folks don’t realize the importance of cleaning these ri-
fles after firing blank ammo. If the Garands are not cleaned, the
rifles will often rust and corrode. I have seen numbers of rifles
with extensive rust in the gas system as well as the chamber. This
alone can case major problems with extraction and ejection.
Also it’s important to lubricate these rifles. The Garand
runs best “wet.” It has to be lubricated and especially needs a
good quality grease such as the Birchwood Casey Snow grease
along the bolt raceways and the op rod. I like the clear Snow
grease as it is not as messy and obvious as many traditional
black greases. When the guys using the rifles are wearing white
shirts and gloves that can be important!

M1A EXTRACTOR PROBLEM

Q My M1A is a fine-shooting rifle, but I am having some

trouble with the fired brass. When the bolt goes forward
and the extractor snaps over the rim of the cartridge, it
chews it up. The rims often have burrs big enough that I cannot
get them to seat in my shell holder without a bit of file work. I
have never seen this before on any other M1A or Garand for that
matter. What would you suggest?

A
The quickest and probably the easiest solution is to
simply replace the extractor. The one you have prob-
ably has some major burrs or flaws or the claw could
be deformed. I would definitely encourage you to put a new
extractor in your bolt.

INLETTING BLACK REMOVAL

Q I have been following some of your stock projects and

am attempting to build a stock for a .22 single-shot bolt-
action rifle. My question concerns inletting black. Just
how do you clean it off the wood and metal? When I try wiping it
off with rags, I just end up smearing it all over everything.

A
I like to use Birchwood Casey’s Gun Scrubber to spray
down the wood and metal. That stuff just dissolves the
grease in the inletting black and allows me to wipe it off
fairly easily with paper towels.

RAMPED PISTOL BARRELS

Q Is it true that you can use a lot hotter loads in auto pistols
with ramped barrels?

A
A ramped barrel will often provide a bit more support
to underside of the rear of the cartridge case. However, I
would not recommend using any loads that exceed stan-
dard factory ammo pressures. Just because the cartridge gets
a bit more support does not mean that it cannot fail. Ramped
barrels are not a license to use super hot loads.

MACHINE GUNS
On gun control—the issue on which Bill Clinton acknowledged the
Democrats lost control of Congress in 1994 by enacting their goofy
ban on certain scary-looking guns and their normal-sized maga-
zines—Hillary Clinton has said repeatedly the “Australian solution”
is “worth a try.” That is, seizing every semi-automatic long gun in the
country (yes, they called it a “buy-back”—do you think gun own-
ers got to set the price for their collectibles?), crushing and melting
600,000 of them. (They’ve since gone after many handguns, as well.)
In contrast, at Donald Trump’s official web site we’re told: “The
Second Amendment to our Constitution is clear. The right of the

“Here’s another important way to fight crime,” The Donald con-
tinues, “empower law-abiding gun owners to defend themselves.
Law enforcement is great…but they can’t be everywhere all of the
time. Our personal protection is ultimately up to us. That’s why I’m
a gun owner…”
Gun and magazine bans? “A total failure,” says Mr. Trump. “Op-
ponents of gun rights try to come up with scary sounding phrases
like ‘assault weapons,’ ‘military-style weapons’ and ‘high capacity
magazines’ to confuse people. What they’re really talking about
are popular semi-automatic rifles and standard magazines that
are owned by tens of millions of Americans. Law-abiding people
should be allowed to own the firearm of their choice…”
The right to carry? “The right of self-defense doesn’t stop at the
end of your driveway,” Mr. Trump continues. “That’s why I have a
concealed carry permit and why tens of millions of Americans do
too. That permit should be valid in all 50 states. A driver’s license
works in every state, so it’s common sense that a concealed carry
permit should work in every state…”
Normally, I’d add here that the Libertarian ticket offers a second
alternative for gun owners. Not this year. The current LP vice presi-
dential candidate is former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who in
1993 signed into law a package of unconstitutional gun control
measures which he’d previously told voters he’d oppose—precisely
the kind of ban on normal-sized magazines and “scary-looking”
semi-automatics that candidate Trump refers to. Both Weld and
running mate Gary Johnson also agree “You shouldn’t have any-
body who is on the terrorist watch list buy any gun at all.”
Problem is, a “terrorist watch list” is not a list of people who’ve
been notified of the charges against them and provided a due-
process opportunity to confront their accusers. The government
can put any American they want on such a “watch list.” They don’t The Midwest’s Premier Class III Dealer

Meantime, even though the mainstream media may turn their
eyes away, everyday Americans have started to notice the ongo-
ing campaign to cripple the economies of rural states by driving
ranchers, miners, lumbermen, even small farmers off the land, all
under the absurd pretense of “protecting” some obscure bird, rep-
tile, minnow or maggot.

But something went wrong, didn’t it?

‘Disconnected From the Realities of the Private Economy’

Writing many weeks before the election, I can’t predict where
this campaign will stand in early November. For one thing, we can’t
know whether Hillary Clinton will be still standing, literally.
But one thing is obvious: The media failed in their effort to have
Donald Trump down for the count, apologizing for his every so-
called “gaffe” and ”misstep,” by Labor Day. Why?

The Internet. More than half the populace can now turn to alter-
native news sources. They can see for themselves the chaos that an
“open borders” policy has created in Europe, where Mideast “refu-
gees” who believe it’s OK to rape any woman not wrapped head
to toe in Muslim-style garments show no inclination to assimilate,
where Scandinavian police have stopped even attempting to protect
their citizens in the “no-go” Muslim enclaves, and civil wars loom.
Just because the “old media” threaten to fire anyone who wants
to talk about Hillary’s health doesn’t mean millions of Americans DON’T TAKE OTHER OFFERS

started to tune in and listen to the candidates, Donald Trump ben-

I won’t predict an outcome. But as Daniel Henninger of the fi-

(under the “house” pseudonym Tyler Durden): “Hillary Clinton’s
comment that half of Donald Trump’s supporters are ‘racist, sex-
