1. INTRODUCTION

Meteoros Automation is an innovative Indian technology company specializing in automation solutions across
industries such as industrial control, smart systems, IoT, and embedded product development. Known for
delivering reliable and efficient automation systems, the company offers services that span hardware design,
embedded software, cloud integration, and data analytics. A year ago, Meteoros Automation expanded its
operations by opening a dedicated hardware division in Tambaram, Chennai. This division focuses on
advanced hardware prototyping and embedded product development, catering to clients across Europe. The
team has successfully delivered several real-time, production-grade solutions tailored to European standards,
emphasizing quality, performance, and timely delivery. With a growing reputation in international markets,
Meteoros Automation continues to bridge innovation with engineering precision, making it a strong player in
the embedded and automation ecosystem.

2. OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

The main objective of this internship was to gain practical exposure in the field of embedded systems and IoT-based
hardware development. During the 45-day internship at Meteoros Automation, I had the opportunity to work closely on
real-time industrial and environmental monitoring projects. My responsibilities spanned across embedded system design,
PCB development, and product enclosure design, allowing me to develop a complete understanding of hardware
development cycles.
The internship primarily focused on the following areas:
• IoT Applications: Worked on real-time LoRaWAN-based projects such as Gas Monitoring Systems, Flood
Monitoring, and Smart Electric Metering, gaining experience in sensor integration, wireless communication,
and data transmission.
• Embedded Systems: Programmed microcontrollers, implemented communication protocols like UART and I2C,
and developed firmware to support real-time data acquisition and transmission.
• PCB Design: Designed and tested custom PCBs for embedded applications using tools like KiCad/Altium,
focusing on form factor, power management, and reliability.
• Enclosure Design: Assisted in designing custom enclosures for field-deployable products, ensuring mechanical
stability and environmental protection.
• Cross-Functional Learning: Collaborated with different departments, including hardware testing, firmware
validation, and mechanical prototyping to understand end-to-end product development.
• Global Exposure: Understood the process of developing industry-grade products that meet the standards of
European clients, as the hardware division frequently catered to international projects.
This internship enhanced my skills in embedded development, circuit design, real-time wireless communication systems,
and gave me valuable industry-level exposure in building complete IoT products from concept to deployment.

8
During my internship at Meteoros Automation, I worked extensively with LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network)
technology in projects like Gas Monitoring, Smart Electric Metering, and Flood Monitoring systems. LoRaWAN is a
wireless communication protocol designed for low-power, long-range IoT applications, making it ideal for connecting
devices spread over large geographic areas.
In these projects, sensor devices collected real-time data — such as gas concentration levels, electricity consumption, or
water levels — and transmitted it wirelessly via LoRaWAN to centralized gateways. These gateways then forwarded the
data to cloud servers for monitoring, analysis, and alert generation.
The key advantages of LoRaWAN that made it suitable for these applications include its long communication range (up
to 15 km in rural areas), low power consumption enabling battery-operated devices to run for years, and secure end-to-
end encryption ensuring data integrity and privacy. Additionally, LoRaWAN supports scalable deployment, allowing
many sensor nodes to connect simultaneously without heavy network infrastructure.
My role involved embedded programming for sensor integration, PCB design to accommodate LoRa modules, and
enclosure designing for environmental protection. Working on these projects gave me practical experience in
implementing a full-stack IoT solution from sensor data acquisition to wireless transmission and cloud-based monitoring,
especially for industrial and environmental applications.

9
3. PROJECT 1

Smart Electric Meter using LoRaWAN

In this project, I designed and implemented a Smart Electric Meter system capable of precise real-time
measurement of critical electrical parameters, including RMS current and voltage, frequency, power factor,
active power (P), reactive power (Q), apparent power (S), and total harmonic distortion (THD). The system uses
high-accuracy sensors such as current transformers (CTs) and voltage sensors interfaced with a microcontroller
unit (MCU) for signal acquisition and processing.

The embedded firmware performs analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) of sensor signals, followed by digital
signal processing algorithms to compute electrical parameters based on IEC standards. Harmonic analysis was
done using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques embedded in the MCU to quantify the harmonic
components in the power system.

For wireless data transmission, the meter integrates a LoRa transceiver module operating in the sub-GHz ISM
band. The firmware implements the LoRaWAN protocol stack to send encrypted packets containing the
processed electrical parameters to a nearby LoRa gateway. The gateway forwards this data to a cloud server via
MQTT or HTTP protocols.

On the server side, the data is decoded, stored in a time-series database, and visualized using a dashboard
interface, allowing users to monitor energy consumption, power quality, and detect anomalies remotely.

I was responsible for end-to-end development including embedded firmware programming (sensor interfacing,
signal processing, LoRaWAN communication), PCB design with careful power management and EMI
considerations, and system-level testing for accuracy, latency, and reliability in harsh environmental conditions.

10
4. PROJECT 2

Flood Monitoring System using LoRaWAN

In this project, I contributed to developing a Flood Monitoring device designed to detect rising water levels
near flood-prone areas. The device integrates water level sensors such as ultrasonic or pressure sensors,
interfaced with a low-power microcontroller to continuously monitor environmental conditions.

When the sensor detects water levels crossing a predefined threshold indicating potential flooding, the system
immediately triggers an alert notification. This alert is wirelessly transmitted using LoRaWAN technology
to a centralized gateway, which then forwards the alert data to a cloud server for real-time monitoring and
early warning dissemination to users.

A key feature of this device is its power optimization techniques, enabling it to operate autonomously for
over five years on a single battery. This is achieved by implementing ultra-low-power sleep modes in the
microcontroller, duty-cycled sensor readings, and efficient LoRaWAN communication protocols that
minimize transmission time and power consumption.

The system is designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions with a rugged enclosure, ensuring
reliability in outdoor deployments. LoRaWAN’s long-range and low-power characteristics make it ideal for
remote flood monitoring where cellular or Wi-Fi networks are unavailable or unreliable.

My role included sensor integration, embedded firmware development focused on power-efficient operation,
PCB design for compact and durable hardware, and testing for accuracy, responsiveness, and long-term
stability.
