What’s New
Read the Information Sheet very well, then find out how much you can remember and
how much you learned by doing self-check 1.
Information Sheet 1
Food and Beverage Services is one of the fast expanding businesses not only in our
country but around the world. Even some of those who started small grew big over
the years. With more and more food and beverage/bar outlets being set up in the
Philippines, competition has become stiffer. To survive the competition, the food
outlets need to be competitive in the quality of their food, facilities and service. To do
so, an aspiring business individual needs to examine oneself if he has what it takes
to be a successful entrepreneur and also the need to study the market environment.
You need to evaluate which of your own competencies still need to be strengthened
or improved. This way, you can make a name for yourself in the food industry. When
you become successful you are instrumental in contributing economic growth and
progress to your own family, community and country.
Aspiring food entrepreneurs can follow some common entrepreneurial competencies
practiced by successful food and beverage businesspersons. This includes the
following:
1. SMART Goals
A successful food entrepreneur creates
Specific, Measurable, Attainable,
Relevant, and Time-bound goals.

markets for their food products. Nowadays, networking opens more business
opportunities.
5. Innovator
A food entrepreneur becomes successful by
making good decisions and developing new
techniques to improve food offerings.
6. Committed
Successful entrepreneurs strive to work for excellent quality and affordable food
items.
7. Hardworking
A good food entrepreneur believes that putting time and energy in the business yields
best results. Many successful entrepreneurs started with nothing except hard work
and determination and are now successful in the food business.
8. Optimistic
A food entrepreneur who has a positive attitude towards work and views problems as
a challenge to improve and to move forward is most likely to succeed.

What’s In
Food is a fast expanding business in the Philippines. With the growing demand for
convenience, more and more food and bar outlets are being set up everywhere.
Competition has become stiffer. To survive the competition, one must check how
many food outlets are operating in your area.
6
Food outlet location determines to a large extent the choice of food to be offered that
can give profits to the aspiring entrepreneur. The uniqueness of your food offerings
is what makes your customers patronize your product over that from your
competitors.
Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
Unique Selling Proposition is the factor or consideration presented by a seller as the
reason that one product or service is different from and better than that of the
competitors. Before you can begin to sell your product or service to your target
customers, you must sell yourself on it. This is especially important when your
product or service is like those around you.
Factors Affecting a Unique Selling Proposition
1. Product - Includes the ingredients used, size and taste
2. Price – It should be affordable to the customer and competitive to the price of
other competitors around you.
3. Place/Location - Conducive to business and strategic in position
4. Promotion – A marketing communication to inform and persuade customers
of how good your product is. Examples: unique packaging, giving reward
points
Tips for a successful Unique Selling Proposition
1. Select the best location. A good location is a key element for attracting
customers. It can bring more profit to the food business.
2. Food offerings should be based on the customers need or want so that they
will patronize your product over and over again.
3. Analyze customers' perspective in choosing food establishments.
Would they choose taste over convenience? Ambiance over price? or would
they be influenced by friends or personal choice?
4. Make survey forms for customers’ reasons why they prefer your place.
Examples of Unique Selling Propositions Practiced by Established Food
Outlets
1. A food outlet offers unlimited rice.
2. Another food establishment offers 1 free dish for those with a minimum
₱1,500.00 bill.
3. A popular food outlet offers free buffet for a birthday celebrant who will dine
with at least two paying bills.
4. Many restaurants serenade and give small cakes for free to a birthday
celebrant.
7
What’s New
Nowadays, a food entrepreneur faces challenges left and right due to stiff
competition. Food stalls are readily seen in almost all barangays. How can you, as
an aspiring food entrepreneur, survive the competition? What should be done to stay
long in the business and be profitable? All successful businesses start with the best
business idea/plan one can think of.
What is a business plan?
A business plan is a written document that describes in detail how a business—
usually a new one—is going to achieve its goals. It lays out a written plan from a
marketing, financial and operational viewpoint. (Kenton, 2019)
Making Good Business Idea/Plan
1. Caters to the needs and wants of the customers. Discover food items that are
likely to be patronized by customers time and again. Be creative and
innovative with your food offerings.
2. Put up a business that you are good at or one that fits your education,
abilities, skills and experiences. If you choose a business that you love to do,
you will tend to be enthusiastic about it. Be more successful.
3. List down all possible ideas and analyze the competition for better business.
Make a list of your interests, ideas, and products that are not offered by the
competitor.
4. Perform SWOT (strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis.
a. Strengths- advantages over other competitors.
b. Weaknesses- challenges or problems of the business
c. Opportunities- things in the environment and market that can help
a. improve the business.
d. Threats- elements in the environment that can harm the business.
8
5. Study its feasibility. The business idea is workable/marketable.
6. Conduct a market research. Make a survey on the age, sex, family
composition, nature of job, income, and lifestyle. Find out preferred products.
Remember to offer unique products that can keep the business profitable for
a long time.
7. Be practical. The business idea should be very useful to customers.
8. Make attainable. Your ideas should not be too hard to implement.
9. Consider your budget. Choose a business that fits your budget.
10. Consider a franchise. The following should be taken into consideration when
you are planning for a franchise:

established customers.
b. You are expected to meet certain expectations about policy and process.
