Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed (unless otherwise stated).

Valve timing procedures

Removal
Removal/installation of timing chain(s) requires:
Sump removal.
Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder 1 .
Ensure timing marks on rear of camshaft gears aligned 2 . If not, turn crankshaft 360°.
Lock timing chain tensioners in retracted position:
Push plunger into tensioner housing.
Insert suitable pin to lock tensioner plunger 3 .
Remove upper timing chain tensioner 4 .
Remove upper timing chain guide 5 .
Remove upper timing chain and camshaft sprocket as an assembly.
Remove lower timing chain tensioner, tensioner rails and chain guide 6 , 7 & 8 .
Fit flywheel/drive plate locking tool.
Remove high-pressure fuel pump sprocket nut 9 .
Fit high-pressure fuel pump sprocket removal tool.
Remove high-pressure fuel pump sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and lower timing chain as an assembly.

Installation
Early production engine:

Caution: Ensure crankshaft sprocket does not have red and yellow timing marks.

Ensure flywheel/drive plate locking tool correctly fitted.

Ensure crankshaft keyway at 12 o'clock position 10 .
Ensure timing marks on rear of camshaft gears aligned 2 .
Fit lower timing chain to crankshaft sprocket and high-pressure fuel pump sprocket.
Ensure coloured chain links aligned with timing marks on sprockets 11 & 12 .
Fit high-pressure fuel pump sprocket, crankshaft sprocket and lower timing chain as an assembly.
Tighten high-pressure fuel pump sprocket nut 9 . Tightening torque: 86±7 Nm.
Ensure timing mark on crankshaft sprocket aligned with main bearing joint 11 .
