The Magic Arc
Have you ever seen a rainbow after it rains? Rainbows are magical arcs of colors
that seem to appear out of nowhere in the sky. But did you know there’s actually
a cool science behind how rainbows form? Let’s explore the secret of making a
rainbow!
The Mystery of Light and Color
Rainbows are all about light and water working together. The white light from
the sun is made up of many different colors, even though we can’t see them all at
once. These colors are hidden inside the sunlight, just waiting to be split apart!
How Rainbows Happen?
When sunlight shines through raindrops in the sky, something amazing happens!
The light slows down and bends as it passes through the water droplet. This
bending of light is called refraction. Inside the raindrop, the light bounces around
and splits into its different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and
violet. These colors spread out and create the beautiful arc we call a rainbow!
Why Is the Rainbow Curved?
The shape of a rainbow is always a big, wide arc. That’s because raindrops are
round, and they scatter the sunlight in all directions. But we can only see the light
that bounces back toward us, so we see the colors in a curved shape.
Answer the following questions:
27. What is the process of bending light called refraction. (½)
28. Why do we see a rainbow as an arc? (1)

in all directions. But we can only see the light that bounces back toward
us, so we see the colors in a curved shape.
29. When can you see Rainbows on the sky? (1)
Ans: When sunlight shines through raindrops in the sky.
30. Imagine you are going to add 2 more colours to appear on a rainbow?
