What Is This Module About?

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you master addition and subtraction of polynomials. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are
now using.

The module is divided into two lessons, namely:


● Lesson 1 – Classifying polynomials according to degree and number of
terms (LS3MP-PA-PSE-JHS-22) and

There are many kinds of polynomials, and they are classified according to
degree and number of terms.

The terms of a polynomial are separated by a plus (+) or a minus


(─) sign. The polynomial below has 4 terms.

DEGREE OF A POLYNOMIAL

The degree of a term is the sum of the exponents of its variables. Thus, the
degree of 4x7y is 8 (i.e., 7 +1). The degree of a polynomial is the degree of the term
with the highest degree.

KINDS OF POLYNOMIAL ACCORDING TO DEGREE

1) LINEAR is a polynomial of the first degree.

Examples: x + 2, 5y

2) QUADRATIC is a polynomial of the second degree.

Examples: 4x2 + 5, xy – 2

3) CUBIC is a polynomial of the third degree

Examples: 4x3 + 5, 4xy2 + 5y – 2

4) QUARTIC is a polynomial of the fourth degree

Examples: −x4 + 5xy, 9xy3 − 7y −2

5) n-th degree polynomial is a polynomial of the n-th degree (usually used
for polynomials with a degree of 5 or more)

Examples:

8th degree polynomial: 4x7y + 3x3y3 – 5,

9th degree polynomial: 6x5y4 – 2x2y3 + 5xy2 – y

KINDS OF POLYNOMIAL ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF TERMS

1) MONOMIAL is a polynomial that has only one (1) term.


Examples: 2𝑥, −3𝑦

2) BINOMIAL is a polynomial that has two (2) terms.


Examples: 4𝑥 3 + 5, 2𝑦 − 3

3) TRINOMIAL is a polynomial that has three (3) terms.


Examples: 7𝑥 4 − 𝑥𝑦 − 1, 5𝑥 2 − 2𝑦 − 3

4) MULTINOMIAL is a polynomial that has more than one term. (usually


used for polynomials with 4 or more terms).
Examples: 8𝑥 3 + 6𝑥𝑦 − 𝑦 + 7, 𝑥 3 + 5𝑥𝑦 − 𝑥 + 2𝑦3

Addition and Subtraction of
2 Polynomials

One way of simplifying polynomials is by adding and subtracting similar


terms. See how it is done.

Let’s Do This

Rules for addition of signed numbers

1. To add like signed numbers, add the absolute values of the addends, then
prefix the common sign.

2. To add unlike signed numbers, subtract the absolute values of the addends,
then prefix the sign of the integer with the higher absolute value.
Rules for subtraction of signed numbers

1. Change the sign of the subtrahend.

2. Proceed to addition of signed numbers.

Absolute value is a term used to indicate the distance of a point or number


from the origin of a number line.

Examples

Addition

1. 8 + (-3) = 5

2. (-6) + (-7) = -13

Subtraction

1. 6 ─ (─3) = 6 + 3

=9

2. ─7 ─ 8 = ─7 + (─8)

= ─ 15

Let’s Study and Analyze

Similar terms are terms having the same variables and exponents. They
differ only in the numerical coefficient.

Similar terms can be added or subtracted by just adding/subtracting the


numerical coefficients and copying the common literal coefficient. When
adding/subtracting polynomials, follow the rules for addition/subtraction of signed
numbers.

Add and subtract the numerical coefficients and copy the literal
coefficient.

3𝑥 3 + 4𝑥 3 − 𝑥 3 = (3 + 4 − 1)𝑥 3

2) 5𝑥 2 𝑦 + 7𝑥𝑦 2 + 3𝑥 2 𝑦 + 2𝑥𝑦 2

Group the similar terms and proceed to addition of polynomials.

Change the sign of the subtrahend.

• Binomial is a polynomial with two terms.

• Constant is a value that is fixed.

• Constant term is a term that contains only a number.

• Cubic is a polynomial of the 3rd degree.

• Linear is a polynomial of the 1st degree.

• Literal coefficient is the part that contains variable/s in a term.

• Numerical coefficient is a fixed number that is multiplied by a variable.

• Monomial is a polynomial with one term.

• Multinomial is a polynomial with more than one term. The term is usually
used for polynomial with four or more terms.

• Polynomial is an expression with terms made of constants or coefficients,


variables, and nonnegative exponents.

• Similar terms are terms with the same literal coefficients.

• Quadratic is a polynomial of the 2nd degree.

• Quartic is a polynomial of the 4th degree

• Trinomial is a polynomial with three terms.

• Variable is a quantity that can be changed and is not fixed. It is usually


represented by a letter of the alphabet.
