INTRODUCTION
This method was first proposed by Prof. G.A. Maney
in 1915, as a general method for analysis of
indeterminate beams and frames and in this method,
we solve for unknown joint rotations, which are
expressed in terms of the applied loads and the
bending moments. Deflections due to shear and axial
stresses are not considered as the effect are small.
ASSUMPTIONS IN THE SLOPE
DEFLECTION METHOD
All the joints of frame are
rigid , i.e., the angles (ϴ)
between the members the
members at the joints do not
change , when the frame is
loaded.(fig I )
Distortions due to axial
deformation are neglected
.Thus in the frame shown
BB’=CC’=Δ(fig ii)
Shear deformation are
neglected.
SIGN CONVENTIONS
Moments: Clockwise
moments are positive and
anticlockwise end moments
are negative. In Fig (i) MBA =
20 kNm and MBC= -20 kNm
Rotations : Clockwise rotation
of a tangent to elastic curve is
positive rotation and
clockwise rotation is a
negative rotation. In fig (ii) ϴ1
and ϴ4 are positive rotations
and ϴ2 and ϴ3 are negative
rotation
Settlement: Settlement ‘Δ’
is negative if left side
support is below the right
side support. Thus in Fig
(iii) for beam AB, Δ is
positive ; for beam BC , Δ is
negative.

EQUATION
PROCEDURE
The procedure is as follows:-
Determine the fixed end moments at the end of each span due
to applied loads acting on span by considering each span as
fixed ended. Assign ± Signs w.r.t. above sign convention.
Express all end moments in terms of fixed end moments and
the joint rotations by using slope – deflection equations.
Establish simultaneous equations with the joint condition that
sum of the end moments acting on the ends of the two
members meeting at a joint should be equal to zero.
Solve for unknown joint rotations
Substitute back the end rotations in slope –deflection
equations and compute the end moments.
Determine all reactions and draw S.F. and B.M. diagrams and
also sketch the elastic curve
ANALYSIS OF CONTINOUS BEAMS
The following steps are involve in the analysis of continuous
beams by slope deflection method,
(i) Each span of the continuous beam is taken as fixed beam
and fixed end moment are noted.
The standard expressions like Wab2, Wba2 and WL2 for
finding
L2 L2 12
end moments in fixed beams may be Refer Table 1 .
Clockwise end moments are to be noted as positive moments
and anticlockwise as negative moments.
TABLE 1: EXPRESSION FOR
FINDING FIXED END MOMENTS
(ii) Using slope deflection equations write all end moments. In
these equations, some of the rotation and deflection will be
unknowns.
(iii) Write the joint equilibrium equations
(iv) Solve the joint equilibrium equations to get the unknown
rotations and deflections.
(v) Substituting the values of unknowns in slope deflection
equations and determine the end moments.
Treating each member of the continuous beam as simply
supported beam subjected to given loading and end moments
determine the end reactions and Draw SF and BM diagrams.
