INSTRUCTIONS
Attempt all the tasks in Section A and only ONE in section B
SECTION A
1 Read the extract below and respond to the tasks which follow it.
In front of the father's poor cottage; with bananas and trees suggestive of a countryside setting.
MOTHER: (Enters carrying a half-full bag of coffee on her back; tired, exhausted, dressed
poorly...)
CHILDREN: (Together): Mother, welcome back.
1ST CHILD: You have spent a long time in the garden.
2ND CHILD: We are hungry, mother, we have had nothing to eat since morning.
SON: Have you brought us matunda from the garden?
MOTHER: Nothing... nothing... my miserable children. (Aside) I wonder what I'll do.
There is never peace in this home... poverty, hunger, disease... What a home with a husband
who constantly drinks and smokes. When he gets coffee money, off he goes on a drinking
spree, leaving us without a coin. Yet it is I, with these shadows with pot bellies suffering
from kwashiarkor, who suffer under the heavy rains and the searing cold, working in the
garden, weeding and picking coffee. But the good husband spends it all in BAR AND
LODGING, feeding on a dish of roasted spring chicken. He never returns home until he has
spent the last cent while we at home cannot even afford sukumawiki. These men! The only
thing they know is to wear us out with bearing children. Children they cannot even feed or
clothe. I wish my daughter, Hope, passes the U.C.E., like my neighbor’s son. With a paid
job, Hope will save us from eating ugali without sauce. This world! While others are having
so much, we are here starving. Education for my daughter, Hope, is my only hope. Oh...
God... (She sings a lamentation song).
HOPE: (Rushes in holding a letter): Mother... why sing such a sad song? Look! (Excitedly
showing her mother the letter) Rejoice and be happy. I have passed the primary leaving exams.
Teacher says I took first position in the whole district. My God, this is the admission letter
(giving it to her mother) to one of the best schools in the country. MOTHER: (Excited,
1
embraces her daughter. To a small girl, Hope's sister) Run to the public pub and ask your
father to come. I must break this good news to him. My daughter has passed her Primary
Examinations. Oh God of the hills! I am happy. Oh, my daughter, how can I thank you?
FATHER: (Enters staggering with four others; a teacher, school dropout, 2nd and 3rd
man) What... What... is all this about? Getting excited in my absence? All of you get seated.
(They do so) Ha... Has your daughter found a man to marry? I married you at her age,
remember... this is the time for me to enjoy the fruits of my labour. Ya... bride price is what
I want.
HOPE: It's not that way, father. I have passed my Primary Leaving
Examinations - besides I am admitted to Form One in a secondary school.
MOTHER: (Excitedly) aren’t we lucky, my husband? Hope will...
FATHER: (Interrupts) Lucky? ... Lucky, indeed! (To the daughter) Get prepared for
marriage, I say. Education... Education... Who will marry you when you have grown old in
school? Men don't want to marry overgrown women with flappy breasts like worn out
socks. Education? For what? For putting on trousers and bell-bottoms? No. MOTHER:
It's never too late to marry, but education and salaried job first. In case she is mistreated by
a man, just as you do to me, she can live comfortably on her salary without him.
FATHER: (Seriously) Don't interrupt woman, especially when men are talking...Women
are supposed to be seen, not heard. Be quiet, alright? (To his friends) Friends, listen to this.
I don't believe in education for girls. These girls (acts) with books and files in their hands
walk tantalizingly up and down the streets only to be grabbed by these men with swollen
bellies.
MOTHER: God forbid! How can you compare my daughter with these school
crooks who are spoilt by sugar daddies?
TEACHER: I am sorry if I may interrupt what seems to be a family affair but the question
of sugar daddies is alarming…
FATHER: That’s the point. These sugar daddies deceive young girls with their
wealth…money…cars…
3RD MAN: Yeah…the money and cars hypnotize these school girls. You know what sugar
daddies do? They put these girls in the back seat which works like magic on women. In a
large expensive car with music booming, the poor girl is lost. She thinks she has had her
heavenly pleasures here on earth, only to return home pregnant.
