performs in a full-length play.

Before we start our lesson proper, I want


you to look at the pictures and describe
each picture.

Men are seen as strong ones while women are


doing household chores. Men are the ones who
work while women tend to stay home and do the
chores.

At the end of the lesson, the students shall


be able to:
a. identify bias and prejudice in the
material viewed;
b. differentiate biases and prejudices in a
statement, and
c. reflect on situations that involve biases
and prejudices.

1. IS IT FAIR OR UNFAIR?

Direction: The students will identify if the


scenario is fair or unfair.

I have a scenario, I want you to think about


whether the scenario is fair or unfair.

1. Not hiring someone because of


their age or gender. UNFAIR

2. People assume a person is gay


because of how they dress and act. UNFAIR

Each one of us has our own opinion on
things, all of us have unique experiences
and perceptions that make us view things.

In the example, being biased can lead to


both discrimination and preferential
treatment. Bias is a tendency to lean in a
certain direction, in favor of an against a
particular thing.

Being biased is lacking a neutral viewpoint


on a particular topic. Somewhere along the
line, bias took on a negative connotation.

Also, a person who is biased or against


someone or something often has an
experience about those people or
something

Example:
Francis loves reading while his friend
Carlo loves basketball. If their school
suddenly had money to build either a new
court or a library, we can see that Francis
and Carlo would have different opinions
on how the money should be spent

Francis will choose the basketball court.

Princess will choose the library.

The opinions of two people are different


when it comes to giving judgments to
decide what should be built. One will
mostly defend their reasons on why should
they be in favor

I want you to give examples of bias.

Prejudice is an attitude or point of view,


whereas discrimination is an action. This is
a preconceived opinion about a person
based only on their relation to a particular
group.

This emotion might be shown through


discrimination against the individual or
members of the target group. Others
characterized prejudice as having
preconceived ideas, feelings, or views
regarding someone or something before
learning all of the facts and information
about that person or thing.

An individual may be prejudiced against


others based on factors such as;
1. Race
2. Age
3. Gender
4. Sexual
5. Orientation
6. Class Status
7. Religion
8. Nationality

Example:
Precious believes that the man beside her
is a terrorist because he is an Arab and
wearing a kandura.
In this scenario, Precious is already
assuming that the man is a terrorist by
judging his appearance even though she
doesn’t know him personally.
E. DEVELOPING MASTERY (LEADS
TO FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT)

1. UNDERSTAND ME!
I have a short video here; I want you to
identify what are the biases and prejudices
about this video.

Possibles answers:
1. Karen favor someone because of how
he/she looks.
2. Karen judge Mr. Moore because of how
he looks and the color of his skin.

Great! Always remember that bias is


leaning toward or against someone or
something without reasonable reason while
prejudice is a point of view, it’s a
preconceived opinion about someone
based on their particular group.

But before that, I would like to ask when


or where you believe this lesson could be
present in a real-life setting. Or what do
you think is its significance to real life?
The significance of knowing biased and
prejudiced statements is to avoid judging other
people based on something we don’t understand.

Those are great realizations you have,


class. All of us can be biased and
prejudiced about someone. As individuals,
we should avoid being biased and
prejudiced.

In the activity, you learned being biased


and prejudiced affects someone’s feelings.
You also learned to not judge the book by
its cover.

1. DRAMA CLUB.
Directions:
 Group yourselves into 4
 Each group will be given a
situation that they will act or
portray in front of the class. After
that, students will determine
whether the situation they portray
is biased or prejudiced.
 Be guided by the following criteria.

Criteria:

Creativity - 10 points
Impact - 10 points
Teamwork - 5 points
25 points

Group 1 Scenario
Dan is often bullied by his classmates
because he is gay. Prejudice

Group 2 Scenario
A teacher caught some students cheating in
an exam. But instead of giving a

AND ABSTRACTIONS ABOUT THE
LESSON
1. What is the definition of Bias?
Bias leaning on something or favoring a certain
people or idea without being fair.
2. What is the definition of Prejudice
Prejudice refers to preconceived opinions or
comments about someone who belongs to a
certain group.
3. How do you differentiate between
bias and prejudice?
Based on the discussion, being bias is choosing
from two choices while prejudice are comments
usually bad.
In a nutshell, bias and prejudice are both
different. Bias is leaning toward someone
because of some unreasonable reason
while prejudice is the preconceived
opinion about someone based on their
related group. We must avoid being biased
and prejudiced because these traits affect
other people
