Foreword
Literature Information
This manual should be stored in the operator's station in the literature holder or seat back literature
storage area.
This manual contains safety, operation, transportation, lubrication and maintenance information.
Some photographs or illustrations in this publication show details or attachments that can be different
from your machine. Guards and covers might have been removed for illustrative purposes.
Continuing improvement and advancement of product design might have caused changes to your
machine which are not included in this publication. Read, study and keep this manual with the
machine.
Whenever a question arises regarding your machine, or this publication, please consult your
Caterpillar dealer for the latest available information.
Safety
The Safety Section lists basic safety precautions. In addition, this section identifies the text and
locations of warning signs and labels used on the machine.
Read and understand the basic precautions listed in the Safety Section before operating or performing
lubrication, maintenance and repair on this machine.
Operation
The Operation Section is a reference for the new operator and a refresher for the experienced one.
This section includes a discussion of gauges, switches, machine controls, attachment controls,
transportation and towing information.
Photographs and illustrations guide the operator through correct procedures of checking, starting,
operating and stopping the machine.
Operating techniques outlined in this publication are basic. Skill and techniques develop as the
operator gains knowledge of the machine and its capabilities.
Maintenance
The Maintenance Section is a guide to equipment care. The illustrated, step-by-step instructions are
grouped by servicing intervals. Items without specific intervals are listed under When Required
topics. Items in the Maintenance Intervals chart are referenced to detailed instructions that follow.
Maintenance Intervals
Use the service hour meter to determine servicing intervals. Calendar intervals shown (daily, weekly,
monthly, etc.) can be used instead of service hour meter intervals if they provide more convenient
servicing schedules and approximate the indicated service hour meter reading. Recommended service
should always be performed at the interval that occurs first.
Under extremely severe, dusty or wet operating conditions, more frequent lubrication than is specified
in the Maintenance Intervals chart might be necessary.
Perform service on items at multiples of the original requirement. For example, at Every 500 Service
Hours or 6 Months, also service those items listed under Every 250 Service Hours or 3 Months and
Every 10 Service Hours or Daily.
Machine Description
This machine is equipped with a Hatz 2M40L diesel engine. It is a self propelled vibratory compactor
with a hydrostatic transmission and articulation capabilities.
This machine is designed primarily for asphalt and gravel base compaction.
The primary job applications for this machine are parking lots, industrial sites, driveways, road repairs
and similar projects.
California Proposition 65
Diesel engine exhaust and some of its constituents are known to the State of California to cause
cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm.

Engine Oil
NOTICE
2. Remove dipstick and wipe clean. Reinsert dipstick, then remove it again to read actual oil level.
Maintain the oil level between the MIN and MAX marks.

NOTE: Refer to the Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities section for the proper amount of
oil to determine the correct position, between MIN and MAX marks, on the dipstick for your
application.
Badly contaminated or deteriorated oil should be replaced early regardless of the replacement
interval.
4. Check the condition of the dipstick O-ring seal and replace if damaged.
Hydraulic Oil
The hydraulic oil tank and fill cap are located under the engine access cover.
2. Check the hydraulic oil level in sight gauge (1). When the oil is cold, the oil level should be to
the middle of sight gauge (1). When the oil is hot, the oil level should fill sight gauge (1).
NOTE: Refer to the Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities section for the proper amount of
oil to determine the correct position for your application.
4. Add oil.
1. The drain plug is located on the front, right side of the machine.
2. Remove drain plug and allow the water and sediment to drain.
Water System
Clean Filter
3. Remove the filter bowl and use pressure air to clean screen.
NOTE: There are two water tank fill caps; one on each side of the operator's seat.
Walk-Around Inspection
Inspect Machine
NOTICE
NOTE: Inspect carefully for leaks. If leaking is observed, locate the source and correct the leak.
Check fluid levels more frequently than the recommended periods if leaking is suspected or
observed.
Inspect steps and handholds for condition and cleanliness. Inspect the Rollover Protective
Structure (ROPS) (if equipped) for damage. If repair is necessary contact your Caterpillar dealer.
Tighten any loose ROPS bolts. Repair or clean if necessary.
Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks. Inspect the tank, hoses, tubes, plugs, joints and fittings.
Correct any leaks.
NOTICE
If the machine is equipped with lights, turn on the light switch. Observe the lights and replace any
that are not working.
Be sure covers and guards are firmly in place. Inspect for damage.
Inspect and repair the instrument panel gauges, controls, and switches when necessary.
Inspect the rubber isolation blocks, between the vibratory drum and the machine frame for
damage, cracking or splitting. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for the complete isolation block
replacement procedure.
Start the machine and depress the horn button. If the horn does not sound make any necessary
repairs before operating.
Inspect oil filter indicator. Service filters before the recommended service interval if the indicators
are not in acceptable range. Refer to the Every 500 Service Hours or 6 Months in this Maintenance
Section for more detailed information.
Seat Belt
Replace the seat belt after three years of usage, regardless of appearance.
Seat belt and mounting hardware must be inspected for wear or damage before operating the
machine. Replace the belt or mounting hardware if worn or damaged.
Indicators
3. All indicator lights should come on except the direction indicator which comes on if the
direction indicator switch is in the ON position.
Back-Up Alarm
Check Operation
While the machine is running move the propel control lever to reverse. If the back-up alarm does
not sound make any needed repairs before operating.
The sound level can be adjusted by moving the adjustment on back of alarm to meet operating
requirements. The alarm is set at the highest sound level when shipped from the factory. The
setting should remain on high, unless the job site requires a lower level.
Refer to Monitoring Systems and Operator Station Features Section for more details on adjusting
the back-up alarm sound level.
