using Arduino technology. Its main goal is to create an eco-friendly, cost-efficient, and smart
system that automatically waters plants based on the soil’s moisture level, reducing the need
for manual watering and preventing both under- and overwatering.
In our current world, water conservation and sustainable technology are becoming more
important due to climate change, droughts, and the growing need for food and agriculture. Many
people struggle to care for their plants regularly because of busy schedules, travel, or
forgetfulness. This leads to dying plants, wasted water, and poor gardening efficiency. Our
system solves this problem by using smart automation and renewable energy.
At the heart of our prototype is the Arduino Uno microcontroller, which acts like the brain of
the system. It receives data from a soil moisture sensor inserted into the plant's soil. When the
soil becomes too dry, the Arduino activates a relay module or MOSFET to turn on a 5V DC
water pump. The pump draws water from a container and delivers it to the plant through clear
tubing. Once the soil is moist again, the Arduino turns the pump off automatically.
The system is designed to be solar-powered, which makes it energy-efficient and suitable for
outdoor use. A solar panel charges a rechargeable battery during the day. The battery stores
this energy and powers the Arduino and pump, allowing the system to run even when the sun
isn’t shining. To ensure safe charging, a diode (1N4007) is used to prevent reverse current, and a
TP4056 module can be added to manage battery safety and charging.
All components are neatly arranged inside a small plastic container, making the system
compact and portable. The container protects the electronics from water, dust, and sunlight. The
setup is simple, easy to build, and low-cost, making it perfect for home gardens, school gardens,
or even small farms.
The solar-powered automatic plant watering system helps reduce soil degradation by preventing
overwatering, erosion, and waterlogging. It supports healthy plant growth and soil stability in
small areas like gardens. While it may not solve big soil problems, it promotes better soil care—
and we hope that in time, our prototype will be improved and expanded for even greater impact.
Soil degradation happens when the soil becomes weak and loses nutrients due to overwatering,
erosion, chemicals, and poor farming. Our proposed solar-powered automatic watering system
aims to prevent this by watering only when needed, which can help protect soil nutrients and
reduce erosion. It will use clean solar energy and support healthy plant growth. While it is still a
proposal for now and designed for small areas, we hope that in time, it can be developed,
improved, and expanded to help care for soil in larger spaces.
