A.) Objective:
Functional test to confirm that the electric actuator’s motor protection is within specification.
B.) Required Steps:
1. External visual inspection of all external surfaces including paint finishes, control knobs and valve
stems.
2. The oil level is checked and replenished if necessary.
3. Mounting bolts, nuts, washers and screws are checked for damage and tightness.
4. Confirmation that hand wheel operation is possible and that there is physical movement of the valve.
5. Confirmation that local control works in both directions, whilst checking for any signs of deterioration
(e.g. .undue motor noise). If the valve has a threaded stem and it has been operated more than 5000
times, the thread is covered with grease and the indentation on the thread is checked once it has
gone through the drive bush.
6. Where available (through data loggers) historic performance data is investigated and compared
against stored torque profiles.
Shutdown inspection
7. Isolate supply from panel
8. The terminal cover is removed and the connections are checked for tightness. Additionally, the
compartment is checked for water ingress and corrective action taken as necessary. The ‘O’ ring seal
is replaced and if it is an Explosion Proof type actuator the integrity of the flame path is inspected.
9. The motor cover is removed and the motor is checked. The case is checked for any ingress of
moisture. The ‘O’ ring seal is replaced. If the unit is an Explosion Proof actuator, the integrity of the
flame path is inspected.
10. The electrical control cover is removed and the compartment switches, contactors and electrical
control equipment are checked. The O ring is replaced. If the unit is an Explosion Proof actuator the
integrity of the flame path is inspected.
11. Confirm positioner/indicator is functioning
12. Ensure earthing/bonding integrity
13. All cover screws are replaced using grease to enable future removal and limit corrosion.
14. If applicable, for the type of actuator, the battery is replaced.
15. Check the oil level/greasing.
16. Energize supply from panel
Operational check
17. On completion both local and remote operation are checked
Note: If parts replacement or adjustment of settings is required, refer to OEM manual and if available use
the service of the OEM specialist engineers

6. IMPLEMENTATION CONSIDERATIONS
Category* Consideration
Spares Strategy will depend on the Stakeholder’s Maintenance Policy. For example where there is a
manufacturer healthcare policy in place, then spares would be managed by the manufacturer.
Policy
Where the stakeholder assumes responsibility for spares provision then a Stock Optimization Policy
needs to be in place that evaluates the stock-out risk.
Local environmental conditions may impose constraints on the implementation of the strategy. For
Environment example, access to the plant may be weather dependent or have additional risks, such as high level
of H2S in gas
