Amr Bin Shuaib relates from his grandfather that Nabi ﷺsaid: When one of
you becomes frightened during sleep, then let him say: ‘I seek refuge in Allah’s

from the whisperings of the Shayatin, and that they should come (A`ūdhu

who attained maturity, and those of them who did not, he would write it on
a sheet and then hang it around his neck. (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3528)
From the above we understand that: The Sahaabi only wrote it and hung
it around the neck of those who could not recite for themselves.

The prohibition of using ta’weez has been deduced from the following
narration:

Uqba Bin Aamir Al Juhany narrates that a group of people came to Rasul ﷺ.
He accepted a pledge of allegiance from nine of them and did not accept it
from one. So they said oh Prophet of Allah you accepted the pledge of
allegiance from nine but left this one. He replied: “Surely he is wearing a
Tamimah”, so the individual then took hold of the Tamimah and broke it off.
After doing so the prophet ﷺaccepted the pledge of allegiance from him and
said whoever wears a Tamimah surely has done shirk.
In the explanation of the word Tamimah, Imam Baihaqi (A.R) says:

The Tamimah is known as a kharazah and is a necklace which the Arabs
would tie around their necks believing that it averts calamities.
2|Ruqyah SA - Ta’weez
It is possible, that the prohibition and detestability of wearing a Tamimah is
for that person who believes that, the restoration of health and the removal
of illness is through the Tamaaim the people of Jaahiliyyah would believe.
As for that person who wears it taking Barakah through the name of Allah
and knowing that the calamity cannot be lifted except by Allah and cannot
be removed except by Allah, then there is no harm in him wearing this
necklace.” “Amulets (tamimah, pl. tamaaim) are things made from pearls or
bones and worn on the necks of children or adults or hung up in houses or
cars, in order to ward off evil – especially the evil eye – or to bring some
benefits.
Zaynab , the wife of `Abdullah ibn Mas`ud , reported that `Abdullah ibn
Mas`ud stated that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺsaying: “Spells,
amulets and love-charms are (forms of) shirk.” `Abdullah said, “Why do
you say this? By Allah, when I was weeping eczema, I kept going to so and so,
the Jew, who did a spell for me and made the thing calm down.” `Abdullah
said: “That was just the work of Satan, who was picking it with his hand, and
when (the Jew) uttered the spell, he stopped. All you needed to do was to say
as the Messenger of Allah used to say: Adh-hib al-ba’s Rabb an-Nas ishfi
anta ash-Shafi la shifa’a illa shifa’uka shifa’an la yughadiru saqaman (Remove
the harm, O Lord of mankind, and heal, You are the Healer. There is no
healing but Yours, a healing which leaves no disease behind.’” [Reported by
Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Zainab reported: Abdullah ibn Mas’ud said: I heard the Messenger of Allah,
say, “Verily, spells, amulets, and charms are acts of idolatry.” I said, “Why
do you say this? I swear by Allah that when my eye was twitching I would go
to a Jewish man who would cast a spell on me and it would calm down.
Abdullah said, “That was only the work of a devil poking at you with his hand
and he would stop after the spell was uttered. Indeed, it is enough for you to
say as the Messenger of Allah said: Take away the pain, O Lord of mankind,
and give healing for you are the healer. There is no healing but your healing,
a healing that leaves no trace of illness.” [Sunan Abu Dawud 3883]

It is reported from Ibn Mas'ud that once, when he entered his home, he
noticed his wife wearing a knotted object round her neck. He took it away
and broke it. Then he remarked 'The family of Abdullah has become so
arrogant that they now associate with Allah those for whom He has sent down
no authority.'
I have heard the Messenger of Allah saying: 'Verily, incantations, amulets,
and love charms are acts of shirk (associating gods with Allah).' The people
said: 'O Abu Abdullah! We are familiar with incantations and amulets, but
what is a love charm (At-Tawlah) ‘?’ He replied: 'It is a sort of magical formula
by which women sought to gain their husbands' love'." [Related by Al-Hakim
and Ibn Hibban].
Imran ibn Husain reports that the Messenger of Allah saw a man wearing
a bracelet of copper on his arm. The Prophet exclaimed to him: 'Woe be to
you!' What is this? ' The man replied: 'I am suffering from al-wahinah' (The
man was wearing a copper bracelet believing it would relieve his pain and
suffering). The Prophet prohibited him from wearing it because he
regarded it as an amulet. The Prophet said: 'It will give you nothing but
pain. Throw it away. Had you died while wearing it, you would never have
achieved salvation! ie. you would have died in the state of the unforgivable
sin of shirk'" [Narrated by Ahmad]
Abu Dawud reported that `Isa ibn Hamzah said: “I entered upon ‘Abdullah
ibn `Akim and his face was red due to high fever. I said, ‘Why don’t you wear
an amulet?’ He said, ‘We seek refuge with Allah from that. Allah’s Messenger
stated: “Whoever wears anything (meaning an amulet) will be entrusted to
its care…” [Reported by Abu-Dawud]
4|Ruqyah SA - Ta’weez
If we look at majority of the ta’weez used today and the intention of it’s
use, we will find that it is sufficient to be extremely cautious and rather
recite the Quraan and make masnoon duas instead of going with
undecipherable items.
In this manner people are forced to foster their connection with Allah.
Most, if not all are looking for a quick fix ...
Get a ta’weez from Moulana for barakah in rizq, marriage etc. …
Get Moulana to clean my house ...
And all is purportedly sorted out...
Those individuals who use jinn write the name of jinn together with Qur’aan
in a way we cannot even read it, people go to them with a minor ‘Ayn
problem, which is the lightest mystical issue and end up with a jinn problem.
People have to be proactive in their shifaa and should be encouraged to slowly
but surely make a make a committed Islamic lifestyle change. With love and
respect, patients need to be enlightened that there is no need for jinn or
ta’weez.
The need is for Allah and Quraan. Every believer can a Raaqi for themselves
by making their actions pleasing to Allah and using the Quraan and
sunnah for solving of their issues.
There is no such thing as a “special gift” to have the ability to solve our
problems. All you need is Imaan and be able to recite Quraan.
We all have one or more than one copy of the Quraan at home. So, if you
want a ta’weez that should be more than enough the entire Quraan from
cover to cover written in full. No numbers, grids, names other than Allah ,
etc.
Just as one switches on the light switch the power goes to the light bulb and
it lights up. So too, when we recite the Quraan, the Noor is activated.

Clarification:
Ruqyah SA has not said that it is not permitted to use ta’weez. We have said
it is permitted with conditions. We have never spoken ill of any of the
akaabireen ulamaa (may Allah raise their ranks). If a Raaqi of Ruqyah South
Africa has abused any of our akaabireen this should be brought to our notice
as this is a contravention in our training. What we have said, that our
esteemed akaabireen knew the limits of Sharia’h.
In today's era, there are many, who have taken the ta’weez of our akaabireen
and tainted it by adding things from their own side and utilising their ta’weez
for bad. Therefore, we should refrain from ta’weez as most of those who write
the ta’weez do not know what they are writing or the meaning of it, neither
does the recipient and that will be regarded as shirk.
Please do not only look at this ta’weez issue within our akaabireen circles.
Look at the use of ta’weez in other circles where you will find serious dangers
in them. There is a very, very low percentage patients who come to us with
permitted ta’weez.
Looking at the way forward, the cure of the masses suffering from different
mystical issues from Ayn to sihr etc. considering their spiritual condition, we
want to move them away from getting others to sort their problems, whilst
they themselves live a life contrary to the sunnah.
We encourage patients to take active participation and thereby getting
themselves closer to Allah and the sunnah by reciting Quranic aayaat and
duas from Hadith. In this way their yaqeen in Allah increases, they see the
benefit and protection in following deen. الحمد هللWe encourage patients to
recite their aayaat and duas after every salaah. Patients will start reading
salaah because they are told the prescription of reciting after salaah.
This is why we discourage use of ta’weez سدا للباب. To close the door to
incorrect and wrong usage and to protect the people from having reliance on
the ta’weez alone which may harm ones Imaan and Aqeedah in the future.
