HUMANITIES
the word humanities comes from the Latin word “humanus”
which means “human” who is refined, cultured, and worthy
of dignity of a man.
it is based on the philosophical view of the sophist’s dictum
of the Greek Pythagoras who said that: “Man is the measure
of all things”. The study of Humanities includes the
appreciation of the arts which can strengthen our values
about life and reality.
HUMANITIES
Aeschylus, a fifth century Greek dramatist aptly observed about human beings
“Though they had eyes to see, they saw to avail: they had ears,
but understood not; but like the shape in dreams, throughout
the lengths of days, without purpose they wrought things in
confusion”
-to become totally and truly human, we must therefore learn
how to use and enjoy our senses, or we may become part of
what the Psychologist Rudolp Arnheim observed about a
“generation that has lost touch of it’s sense”
HUMANITIES
Susan Sontag (1996) has this say about our sensual “recovery” throughout
the arts:
“What is important now is to recover our senses. We must learn
to see more, to feel more. The aim of all commentary on art now
should be able to make works of art -and by analogy, our own
experience-more, rather than less, real than us,. his function of
criticism should be to show how it is, even that it is what it is,
rather than to how what it means”
HUMANITIES
Humanities provide general knowledge about the best
accomplishments of human being
Humanities are the stories, the ideas, and the words that
help us make sense in our lives and our world.
Humanities introduce us to the people we have never met,
places we have never visited, and ideas that may have never
crossed our minds.
Humanities help us to face the challenges and decide what
is important in our lives and what can we do to make them
better.
HUMANITIES
The humanities help us address the challenges we face together
in our families, our communities, and as a nation. (Maguigad et
al.,2005)
According to Dr. Francisco Zulueta, (2003), during the
Renaissance, Humanities is defined as the set of disciplines
taught in the universities which include grammar, rhetoric,
history, literature, music and philosophy-a body of knowledge
aimed to make a man, a full human-cultured, refined and well-
rounded. This developed from the concept which recognized
man’s essential worth as a member of society
WHAT IS ART?
The word “art” comes from Latin word “ars”
which means “art, skill or craft”.
There is NO definition of art.
Art can be defined in a variety of ways, but at it’s
most basic, art is a visual medium used to
express ideas and emotions or tell a story, such
as painting, sculpture, or photography.
Art is a form of communication
ARTS
-the term art is often used to describe the
fine arts, which consist of painting, sculpture,
architecture, literature, dance, music, and
film. Works of arts can be classified as verbal
and non-verbal
-it is an expression of our thoughts,
emotions, intuitions, and desires, but it is
even more personal than that
-it is the communication of intimate
concepts that can’t be faithfully portrayed
by words alone
ART HISTORY
Ars in Medieval Latin came to mean something
different. It meant any special form of book-learning,
such as grammar or logic, magic or astrology
It was during the 17th century when the problem and
idea of aesthetics begin to unfold distinctly from the
notion of technical workmanship, which was the
original meaning of art
It was finally in the 18th century when the world has
evolved to distinguish between the fine arts and
useful arts
The fine arts would come to mean not delicate or
highly skilled arts, but beautiful arts
The humanities constitute one of the oldest and most
important means of expression developed by man
which is art
ART HISTORY
It is the study of objects of art
considered within their time period
Art history is the study of objects of art in
their historical development and stylistic
context; that is genre, design, format and
style. The study includes painting,
sculpture, architecture, ceramics,
furniture and other decorates objects.
Iconography is a major part of art history.
It is a way to learn about the civilizations
of the past
