8. Using L, M, and T for the dimensions of length, mass, and time, respectively,
show what the dimensions of impulse will be (5.1)

9. Two colliding objects will only experience the same velocity change if they
have the same mass, and the collision occurs in an isolated system. True or
False? (5.4)

10. The work-energy theorem shows that doing work on an object changes it (5.2)

Part B: Calculations [T/I] / 10 Marks (2 marks each)

10. A car travelling at 73.6 km/h has 5.15 X 105 J of kinetic energy. What is the mass
on the car? (4.2)

11. A train is moving along a straight track when the driver suddenly applies the
brakes. The force of friction between the wheels and the tracks is opposite to the
train’s direction of motion and decreases the train speed. Calculate the work done
by a constant frictional force of 2.3 kN over a distance of 5.7 X 107 m. (4.1)

energy and 16 J of gravitational potential energy. The mechanical energy of the

pencil is ___________________________

14. Determine the maximum speed reached by a roller coaster at the bottom of the first
hill, if the vertical drop from the top of the hill is 46.4 m, and the speed at the top of
the hill is approximately zero. Friction and air resistance are negligible. Express
your answer in metres per second and kilometres per hour. (4.5)
