A tourist arriving in Kenya from Britain had 9,600 UK Sterling pounds. He converted the pounds to
Kenya shillings at a commission of 5%. While in Kenya, he spent 3/4 of the money. He then changed the
balance to US dollars before leaving. If he was not charged any commission for his last transaction,
calculate the amount of US dollars he received. (3 marks)

9. The masses of two similar building blocks are 2.7 kg and 800 g respectively. Find the surface area of the
larger block if the surface area of the smaller block is 120 cm2. (3 marks)

12. The line segment below represents part of triangle ABC. Using a ruler and a pair of compasses only
locate point C such that <ABC = 1200 and <BAC = 300. By dropping a perpendicular from C to meet
line AB produced at H, measure CH hence find the area of triangle ABC. (4 marks)

13. A hemispherical solid whose radius is 2.8 cm is melted and recast into a cube. Find the length of the
cube correct to 2 decimal places. (Take π = 22/7) (3 marks)

14. Three camps P, Q and R received a total of 370 bags of maize for relief food. The bags were divided in
ratios such that the ratio of camp P:Q was 2:3 while that of R:Q was 4:5. How many more bags did
camp Q receive than camp P? (3 marks)

17. A line L1 passes through point (-2,3) and (-1,6) and is perpendicular to a line L2 at point (-1,6).
a) Find the equation of L1 in the form . (2 marks)

b) Find the equation of L2 in the form . (3 marks)

c) Given that another line L3 is parallel to L1 and passes through point (1,2), find the x and y intercepts
of L3. (2 marks)

d) Given that L3 intersects L2 at point R, find the co-ordinates of point R. (3 marks)

18. A parent has two children whose age difference is 5 years. Twice the sum of the ages of the two children
is equal to the age of the parent.
a) Taking x to be the age of the elder child, write an expression for;
i. The age of the younger child. (1 mark)

ii. The age of the parent. (1 mark)

b) In twenty years’ time, the product of the children’s age will be 15 times the age of their parent’s
i. Form an equation in x and hence determine the present possible ages of the elder child.

ii. Find the present possible ages of the parent. (2 marks)

iii. Determine the possible ages of the younger child in 20 years’ time. (2 marks)

19. A flag post 12 m long is fixed on top of a tower. From a point on horizontal ground, the angles of
elevation of the top and bottom of the flag post are 460 and 330 respectively. Calculate;
a) The horizontal distance from the point on the ground to the base of the tower. (4 marks)

b) The total height of the tower and the flag post. (2 marks)

c) The shortest distance from the point on the ground to;


i. The top of the flag post. (2 marks)

21. A surveyor followed the route PQRS. Q is 250 km on a bearing of 0750 from P. R is on a bearing of S
700E from P and 275 km from Q. S is 300 km on a bearing of 1000 from Q.
Using a scale of 1 cm to represent 50 km:

a) Show the relative position of PQRS. (4 marks)

b) Determine:

(i) The distance PR in km. (2 marks)

(ii) Bearing of Q from R. (1 mark)

(iii) Distance PS in km. (2 marks)

23. Triangle ABC with vertices 𝐴(1,4), 𝐵(1,1) and 𝐶(3,1) is mapped onto triangle A′(5,8), B′(2,8) and
C′(2,6) by rotation. Triangle 𝐴′𝐵′𝐶′ is mapped onto triangle 𝐴′′𝐵′′𝐶′′ by a reflection on the mirror line
