GRADE 12 MATHS LITERACY CHEAT SHEET

MEASUREMENT & GEOMETRY

Area

• Rectangle: Area = Length × Breadth

• Square: Area = Side × Side

• Circle: Area = π × Radius² (π ≈ 3.142)

Volume

• Rectangular Prism (Box): Volume = Length × Width × Height

• Cylinder: Volume = π × Radius² × Height

Circumference

• Circle: Circumference = π × Diameter

Pythagoras' Theorem (Right-angled triangle):

• c² = a² + b² (c is the hypotenuse)

SCALE & MAPS

Scale Ratio:

• Actual Length = Measured Length × Scale Factor

Conversions:

• 10 mm = 1 cm

• 100 cm = 1 m

• cm = inches × 2.54

SPEED, DISTANCE & TIME

• Time = Distance ÷ Speed

• Distance = Speed × Time

• Speed = Distance ÷ Time

PROBABILITY & STATISTICS

Basic Probability:

• Probability = Favourable Outcomes ÷ Total Outcomes

• Convert to Percentage: Percentage = Probability × 100

FINANCE & VAT

• Total Cost (incl. VAT 15%) = Price × 1.15

• VAT Amount only = Price × 0.15

UNIT CONVERSIONS

Unit Conversion

1 inch 2.54 cm

1 foot 0.3048 m

1 m² 10,000 cm²

1 m³ 1,000,000 cm³

1 litre 1,000 ml

1 hectare 10,000 m²

1 ml 1 cm³

COMBINATIONS & COUNTING

• Total Combinations = Choices for Option 1 × Choices for Option 2 (e.g. Wall Colours × Roof
Colours)

TIP: Always write down the formula first. Substitute values correctly. Watch your units!
