WORKSHEET 1 - CURRENT ELECTRICTY (19-03-2023)

1.(a) A potential difference V is applied across a conductor of length l and uniform cross section
area A. How will the (i) electric field E , (ii) drift velocity Vd and (iii) current density J be
affected when (a) V is doubled and (b) l is halved ( keeping other factors constant)?

(b) The following table gives the length of three copper wires, their diameters, and the applied
potential difference across their ends. Arrange the wires in increasing order according to the
following:

(a) The magnitude of the electric field within them,

(b) The drift speed of electrons through them, and

(c) The current density within them.

2. A potential difference of 6V is applied across a conductor of length 0.12m. Calculate the drift
velocity of the electrons, it the electron mobility is 5.6 x 10 -6 m 2v -1s-1
3. A cell of emf E and internal resistance r gives a current of 0.5 A with an external resistance of
12 Ω and a current of 0.25 A with an external resistance of 25 Ω. Calculate the (i) internal
resistance of the cell. (ii) emf of the cell.

4. When a current of 0.2 A is drawn from a battery then the potential difference between its
terminals is 20V and when a current of 2A is drawn, then the potential difference drops to 16V.
The emf of the battery is
(i) 15.1V (ii) 20.4V (iii) 18.9V (iv) 23.3V

5 . A cell of emf 'E' and internal resistance 'r' is connected across a variable load resistor R. Draw the plots
of the terminal voltage V versus (i) R and (ii) the current i.
It is found that when R=4Ω, the current is 1A when R is increased to 9Ω, the current reduces to 0.5 A.
Find the values of the emf E and internal resistance r
6. A cell of emf 'E' and internal resistance r is connected across a variable resistor 'R'. Plot a graph showing
variation of terminal voltage 'V' of the cell versus the current 'I'. Using the plot, show how the emf of the
cell and its internal resistance can be determined.

7. The resistance of a field coil measures 50 Ω at 20 0 C and 65 Ω at 70 0 C. Find the temperature

coefficient of resistance.

8. At room temperature (27 0 C) the resistance of a heating element is 100 Ω. Calculate the
temperature of the element, if the resistance is found to be 117 Ω, given that the temperature
coefficient of the material of the resistor is
1.7x 10 – 4 0 C – 1

9. A silver wire has a resistance of 2.1 Ω at 27.5 0 C and a resistance of 2.7 Ω at 100 0 C.
Determine the temperature of coefficient of resistivity of silver.

10. In a Wheatstone bridge circuit, P = 7Ω, Q =8Ω, R = 12 Ω and S = 7 Ω. Find the additional
resistance to be used in series with S, so that the bridge is balanced
(i) 6.71 Ω (ii) 7.62 Ω (iii) 2.67 Ω (iv) 6.27 Ω
11. A wire when connected to 220V main supply, has power dissipation P1. Now the wire is cut
into two equal pieces which are connected in parallel to the same supply, power dissipation in this
case is P2. Find the ratio P2/ P1

12. Two bulbs are rated (P1, V) and (P2, V). If they are connected (i) in series and (ii) in parallel
across a supply V, find the power dissipated in the two combinations in terms of P1 and P2.
13. Draw a graph showing the variation of resistivity with temperature for (a) nichrome (b)
copper (c) carbon (d) mercury

14. Determine the current drawn from a 12V supply with internal resistance 0.5Ω by the infinite
network shown in Fig. Each resistor has 1Ω resistance.
.

15. A battery of 10V and negligible internal resistance is connected across the diagonally opposite
corners of a cubical network consisting of 12 resistors each of resistance 1 Ω. Determine
equivalent resistance of the network and the current through the battery

16. In the given circuit, the potential drop across the resistor is

(i) V (ii) V/2 (iii) V/3 (iv) 2V/3

17. If percentage change in current through a resistor is 1%, then the change in power through it would be
(i) 1% (ii) 2% (iii) 1.7% (iv) 0.5%
18. The V-I curve for a given metallic wire at two different temperatures T1 and T2 are shown in
the figure. Which temperature is greater and give reason:
