A FIRST FOR SOUTH AFRICA

The next generation Plascon Double Velvet Pure drastically

improves indoor air quality by incorporating new air purifying
technology to reduce harmful formaldehyde.

P
lascon Double Velvet has held the title of ‘South Africa’s
preferred indoor paint’ for many years and now.
Thanks to innovative engineering, this industry-leading product will
offer customers even more benefits.

Plascon has taken things one step further by adding pioneering formaldehyde
abatement technology to Plascon Double Velvet Pure
– the first on the South African market!

WHAT IS FORMALDEHYDE?
Formaldehyde is a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) that is used as a binding agent
in many composite building materials like chipboard, textiles and furniture, as well
as several other household products such as cosmetics, detergents and pesticides.
These items are most commonly found in home and office settings where people
spend 90% of their time. Formaldehyde is released into the air from these household
sources and, although it is not the only culprit, it is one of the major contributors to
making indoor air five times more polluted than the air outside.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The formaldehyde abatement technology present in Plascon Double Velvet Pure
absorbs formaldehyde particles emitted from fabrics, woods, building materials and
furniture in the surrounding environment and by reacting with specific compounds
present in the paint, irreversibly converts the formaldehyde compound into harmless
water vapour that is safe for breathing.

PORSCHE PURSUES
E-PERFORMANCE
After initial testing on the proving grounds of the Porsche
Development Centre in Weissach, the all-electric Macan
is ready for the road, with the well camouflaged next-
generation prototypes of the compact SUV now heading
outside Porsche premises for the first time.
By the time the all-electric Macan is launched onto the
market in 2023, it will have covered some three million test
kilometres worldwide in varying conditions. The prototypes
are able to incorporate the experience gained from countless
previous test kilometres driven in a virtual space. Digital
development and testing preserve resources and therefore
enhance sustainability. Instead of real vehicles, the engineers
use digital prototypes – computational models that replicate
the properties, systems and power units of a vehicle to a
high degree of accuracy.
The first physical prototypes of the all-electric Macan were
built based on the data obtained from the simulations which
gets regularly adapted based on the virtual refinement
process. By the same token, the findings from road testing
are fed directly into digital development.
The demanding test programme for the all-electric
Macan, carried out under the extremes of climatic and
topographical conditions, includes disciplines such as the
charging and conditioning of the high-voltage battery, which
has to meet rigorous standards. Like the Taycan, the all-
electric Macan with its 800-volt architecture, will offer typical
Porsche E-Performance, such as long-distance range, high-
performance fast charging and reproducible best-in-class
performance figures.
The market launch of the all-electric Macan, the first Porsche
to be built on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), is planned
for 2023. The new combustion-engined Macan models will
be offered alongside the all-electric Macan in the future.
Until then, however, it still has millions of test kilometres to
cover both in real life and virtually.

SUPERNOVA
Starring Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth
Directed by Harry Macqueen
If you appreciated The Father in theatres recently starring Anthony Hopkins, you might also have
huge respect for the way dementia is handled by this unsentimental and warm film. It might bring
a kind of understanding of what especially the family and friends of sufferers of dementia go
through. In this captivating LGBTQ film, two gay men, who have been together for ages, played
with compassion by Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth, go on a countrywide trip and visit friends and
family. They are actually taking leave of each other as the Tucci character will soon not recognise
anybody around him, not even his husband. It is overwhelming, touching and filled with heartfelt
kindness. Unforgettable, as is also celebrates undying love.

LIKE YOU MEAN IT

Starring Phillip Kamer and Denver Milord
Directed by Phillip Kamer
This LGBTQ-film had potential which isn’t always realised, although the film still strikes some
emotional notes. It is about an out of work actor who suffers from severe mood swings is in
a relationship with a handsome guitar player, Jonah. But he is self-destructive and not even a
counsellor can save this troubled relationship from going off the rails. The film makes brave
statements about moving on once a relationship has taken its course and examines the nature
of true love. It also addresses issues of commitment and the nature of adapting to a lover with a
self-destructive streak. It is, at times, a bit too self-conscious, but still watchable.

END OF THE CENTURY

Starring Juan Barberini and Mia Maestro
Directed by Lucio Castro
Hats off and condoms on for this electrifying new chapter in LGBTQ cinema, not without its faults,
but so refreshing and ordinary that it finds itself in the same company as the classic Weekend (2011).
Two ordinary men (not pretty gym narcissists) meet and indulge in an erotic encounter portrayed
convincingly while avoiding sentiment. One-night stands, mutual attraction, unglamorous though
erotic sex and an attempt at commitment all feature prominently. After a painful separation, the
lovers meet again after twenty years. This love story contains one of the sexiest dance seduction
scenes since Pulp Fiction (1994) and addresses whether gay relationships can be monogamous and
can actually last. It examines what could eventually lead to the termination of a relationship. A virile
and provocative addition to the LGBTQ film movement with amazing chemistry between its leads.

KISS ME KILL ME
Starring Van Hansis and Gale Harrold
Directed by Casper Andreas
You must be in a Rocky Horror Picture Show state of mind to give yourself over to the absolute
awkwardness of this camp, muddled, mawkish mess. Undoubtedly, if you’re with friends at
an outrageous party and want to indulge in a flat, half-hearted, razor-thin movie with glaring
blunders and oversights, this is it. It even indulges in imitating film noir clichés to the extreme.
One of the conditions is: you had to have had a few drinks to survive this clumsy directing and
messy narrative. A young man, Dusty, breaks up with his dubious boyfriend. During a robbery
the ex-lover is killed. Whodunit? The film is weak and lacks coherence apart from being clumsy,
exaggerated and reminiscent of bad 1990s TV. Where is Jessica Fletcher when one needs her?

TRUE HISTORY OF THE KELLY GANG

Starring George MacKay and Nicholas Hoult
Directed by Justin Kurzel
Although this is not strictly speaking an LGBTQ-film, the notorious history of Australia’s Kelly gang
here gets a homo-erotic treatment designed for the gay gaze. Especially George MacKay, that fine
actor whom you might recognise from Sam Mendes’ brilliant one-take 1917, as well as the ever
reliable and credible Nicholas Hoult, are frequently nude and their characters indulge in understated
home-erotic overtures. Be warned, although stunningly and beautiful on the eyes (the Australian
landscape has seldom been depicted as more desolate and deadly) it is excessively violent. Charlie
Hunnam is in fine form with nuanced acting and well-defined characterisation as the lecherous and
frequently nude Sergeant O’Neil. Brutal and disturbing. Please know what you’re letting yourself in
for. This may be about pretty boys, but the subject matter is deadly… and true.

KAREN ZOID | UNDER THE COVERS

I cannot believe the crazy rocker chick that released her debut album in the late ‘90s has turned into
such a mature musician. With a repertoire that really showcases her talent, Karen has continued to
stay relevant in an everchanging music industry. With her new album, Zoid takes on cover songs that
are special to her. The album kicks off with her rendition of the Joni Mitchell classic A Case of You
which is beautifully delivered both musically and vocally. Her cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide
has got nothing to be shy about, but ultimately the best track on the album is where she goes back
to her rock roots and covers Nirvana’s Heart Shaped Box.

JUSTIN BIEBER | JUSTICE

I will not call myself a Justin Bieber fan (Belieber), but everyone now and then he releases something
truly amazing. The last time this happened was with his Purpose album and suddenly there was
THIS. The sentimental R&B drivel that he has released recently is gone and he surprises with an
honest, mature and vulnerable album about his personal struggles with Lyme disease. The lead
single Peaches doesn’t really do his artistry “justice” and the rest of the album is really where
he shows his talent both as singer and songwriter. Lifetime has got to be the perfect love song,
whereas Unstable showcases his emotional battles. Definitely one of the albums of 2021 that is
on repeat in my car!

BRIAN JUSTIN CRUM | BJC:DIVA

Openly gay singer Brian rose to fame after coming fourth on American Idols. After several singles and
club tracks, he releases his first solo album on which he pays tributes to the divas, doing renditions of
some of his favourite songs. The first single is a daring cover of Tell Him originally by Celine Dion and
Barbra Streisand. He is joined on the cover by fellow gay singer Matt Bloyd, telling a beautiful story of
gay love. On the other tracks he pays tribute to Alanis (You Oughta Know), Whitney Houston (I Have
Nothing) and of course Beyonce (Halo). What makes this collection unique other than the gay angle is
the fact that he stayed reasonably true to the original but still doing a completely fresh take on it. Not
just a pretty face (and a good body) but good vocals overall.

SAM SMITH | LOVE GOES: LIVE AT ABBEY ROAD STUDIOS

Hot on the heels of their album Love Goes, gender-neutral Sam follows up with a live album that was
recorded at Abbey Road studios. The album features 12 tracks including earlier hits such as Too Good
at Goodbyes and Lay Me Down. However, the biggest treat on here is their rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s
eighties hit Time After Time. Before performing their upbeat Calvin Harris collaboration Promises, Sam
shouts out “We’re gonna turn Abbey Road into a gay bar right now”. The show is a great mix of upbeat
tracks balanced with typical Sam tear jerkers. The best part of the music is Sam’s amazing vocal ability
and astounding range; not missing a single note!

NORAH JONES | TILL WE MEET AGAIN

With winter upon us, how can we not love a little fireplace cuddle music and who best to serve it than
Norah Jones herself. With her first live album to date, Norah really takes the best songs from her career
and delivers them to perfection. Earlier hits such as Don’t Know Why and Cold, Cold Heart nestle
in nicely with some her newer songs like Just a Little Bit and “falling” and it all just feels like familiar
(though beautiful) territory. She closes the album off with a tribute to the late Chris Cornell singing
Soundgarden’s hit Black Hole Sun in true Norah style. Overall a perfect summation of an artist that is
both consistent and genius in what she does.

DEMI LOVATO | DANCING WITH THE DEVIL: THE ART OF STARTING OVER
After multiple stints into rehab, Demi opens her soul and lays it bare through a collection of songs that
describes her journey over the past few months, recovering as an addict, but also nearly dying from
an overdose. The struggle is probably best echoed in the opening song Anyone where she is literally
begging for help. She also opens up about her bisexuality in the song The Kind of Lover I Am. Met Him
Last Night, a duet with Ariana Grande, has already hit the radio and echoes how we sometimes fall
for the worst possible guy. One of the greatest moments on the album is her cover version of Tears For
Fears’ Mad World. If seven is the holy number, Demi’s seventh album definitely rids itself of the demons
of her past.

Stephen Fry | Michael Joseph | 9780241424582 | R475
The story of Troy speaks to all of us. It is the kidnapping of the beautiful Helen, which sees the Greeks
launch a thousand ships against that great city, to which they will lay siege for ten whole and very
bloody years. It is Zeus, the king of the gods, who triggers war when he asks the Trojan prince Paris to
judge the fairest goddess of them all. It is a terrible, brutal war with casualties on all sides. The Greeks
cannot defeat the Trojans – since Achilles, the Greek’s boldest warrior, is consumed with jealousy over

In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar

astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no
trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of
advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.
In Extraterrestrial, Loeb outlines his controversial theory and its profound implications: for science, for
religion, and for the future of our species and our planet.

The pressure for any gay boy in such environments is high
and they are expected to fit the mould and understand the
importance of marrying young and having children, whilst
supporting their church, family, and congregation. That
applies to all dogmatic beliefs.
I failed to fit into this simplistic view, but being introverted
as a weird little spectacled bibliophilic boy kept me secure in
a world of books, whilst my mother struggled financially as a
single parent to keep the pot cooking.
Despite our differences we relied on each other and my
mother encouraged my entrepreneurial instincts. At the age
of twelve I started a little business supplying milk tarts and
apple tarts to a kind and supportive neighbourhood which
taught me about networking and survival. Our intertwined
lives made it incredibly tough to part when I was conscripted
to the army, but strangely that gave me breathing room to
learn how to deal with a homophobic environment.
Years later, I built a cottage for my mother at my house
where she lived happily for decades until her death. She
prepared us for her inevitable demise, as we never had that
opportunity with my father. Her deterioration over eighteen
months was sad, but we grasped that like most mothers she
bonded us together as siblings.
She passed just before midnight on 14 March 2020,
probably to be with her father, Martin Nel, that she adored Ronnie Nel, Magdalena Nel & Louis Nel
and whose birthday was on 15 March. My sister Joan and I
felt she wanted to celebrate her father’s birthday with him on
the other side.
Attachment theory is fundamental in psychology and
research indicates how we are hotwired to be attached
to others and how it affects our mortality, as in the case
of infants who die at high rates when detached from their
caregivers, irrespective of medical attention or nutrition.
Alan Samons in a dhow in Mozambique
Never underestimate unconditional love that sprouts in so
many shapes and forms in what often starts in unexpected
casual relationships in our lives. It might just be the new
unwanted pavement special that you adopt from the SPCA.
Or the shy geeky guy that you just met or maybe someone
that you meet purely platonically at an art class. Relationships
are complex, but forming new bonds with people we care
about is crucial, especially when going through break ups.
In a society where we break up often whilst generally not
having children, we rely so much more on friendships and
significant others. Life goes on and our innate urge to give
and to love unconditionally is incredibly strong. Recognising
and allowing this drive helps us to find fulfilment, whatever
our age, sex appeal or financial power may be.
Should you be blessed with finding such unconditional
love in romantic love, then hold on for dear life, as such
a catch should never be abandoned! Deep relationships
matter more than we care to admit and are less random
than we anticipate. You can never do enough for those who
love you so unconditionally.

CAFÉ PICOBELLA | Melville, Johannesburg

This modest eatery has been one of our local favourites for
many years. The old house has been given an Italianesque
makeover with stone arches, a massive pizza oven and
simple interior. The north-facing patio is popular year-round
and if your furkids are well-behaved, they are welcome on
the patio. The menu is pretty standard Italian fare, but there
are a few stand-out dishes, like the beef lasagne and the
salmon pasta, but their pizzas are good as well. It’s a great
weekend breakfast spot. The owner, Dayon, is a lovely man
and knows all his regulars by name. If he’s in, there will
be classical Italian opera on the sound system, which adds
immeasurably to the atmosphere. Service is friendly, but
a tad inconsistent. Service notwithstanding, Picobella is a
home-from-home – and office – for many Melvilleans.
