964-0400/0401-OXX-23-08 Sep 30/91 Mod installs firmware which flashes the RDY light
(012-0542-108) during control mode standby. This allows the Data
Loader to still appear active after the data has been
uploaded, and the aircraft computer is verifying the
data sent from the ADL or PDL. The EPROM firm-
ware also corrects a 429 half cell bit shift problem
that causes errors when loading the Rockwell Collins
computers on 747-400 aircraft. C41 through C44 are
removed to improve the rise time on the output of the
ARINC 429 transmit drivers.

If the Data Loader has been configured to automatically upload files, it repeatedly sends
RTS words to the aircraft computer. Once the aircraft computer senses the RTS word,
it may send a Header (HDR) word encoded with the Automatic Mode command to the
Data Loaderto begin uploading the first block of the file. Upon receipt of the HDR word,
the Data Loader sends a headerword to the aircraft computer acknowledging receiptof
the command. The Data Loader then sends a POL word tothe aircraftcomputer and the
download takes place as describedin the preceding paragraph.
B . Control Mode
In the Control Mode, the Data Loader responds to commands fromthe aircraft computer that
instruct the Data Loader to perform several file and data related operations. The Data Loader {a,-)

initializes to Automatic Mode (either upload or download) following insertionof a diskette. The
Data Loader entersthe Control Mode if the ControlMode command is issued during automatic
operations in response to an RTS or POL word. Also, the Control Mode may becommanded
at the termination of a file transfer.
Commands must be setto the Data Loader at leastonce every 30 seconds. If a command is
not received in this timeperiod, the Data Loader turns on the transfer (XFER)
fail indicator and
terminates communication with the aircraft computer.
(1) ControlUploadTransfers
This transfer is basically the same as that of the Automatic Mode, except that it is explicitly
initialized by the aircraft computer. First, the aircraft computer places the Data Loader in
Control Mode. Next, it explicitly commands the Data Loader to read a block of data by
issuing a Read Block command. Then, the aircraft computer must issue a POL word to
initiate the block upload. This sequenceis repeated as desired for allblocks of the file.
(2) ControlDownload Transfers
Download transfers differ from those of Automatic Mode in that the aircraft computer is
responsible for opening and closing the file on the Data Loader’s diskette. Once the file
has been opened, the aircraft computer must first issue a Write Blockcommand to initiate
the block download operation. Then, the Data Loader must send a POL word toinitiate the
block download.
3. Major Components
Major components of the PDL are the Cover Assembly, Panel Assembly, A5 Power Supply, and
ADL. Major components of the ADL are the Interconnect (Al), Power Supply (M),429 Controller
(A3), and Drive Assembly (A4).

I A. Interconnect
CCA (Al)(See Figs. 105,106)
This board translates Airborne Data Loader rear connector pins into4 rows of 15-pin connec-
I tions and a set of 6 connections, E l through E6, for AC power, +28VDC, and ground. It also
provides for interconnection of thePower Supply CCA (A2),the 429 Controller CCA (A3), and
the Disk Drive (A4).
I B . Power SupplyCCA (M),
PN722-3527-XXX (See Fig. 107, Sheet 2)
This board regulates voltages and
monitors power.
(1) InputFilter
The 11WAC, 400Hz input is appliedto the input EM1 filter, which prevents switching noise
generated by U1 from getting backinto the 115VAC line.
(2) PowerConverter
U1 provides +5VDC, +12VDC, and -1 2VDC. C1,an input filter capacitor, provides'holdup'
voltage for 20 milliseconds in the event ofmomentary power loss.
(3) +SVDCSupply
The +5VDC output of U1 is filtered by C2, C8, and C9. R3 provides a load when the Power
Supply board is unloaded. FL4 is an EM1 filter.
(4) +12VDCSupply
The +12VDC output of U1 is filtered by C3, C10, C15, and L5. R4 provides a load when
the Power Supply board is unloaded. FL3is an EM1 filter.
(5) -12vDc Supply
The -12VDC output of U1 is filtered by C4, C1 1, and C13. VR4 provides overvoltage pro-
tection. FL2 is an EM1filter.
(6) -5VDC Supply
U3 is a linear regulator that providesa -5VDC output from the -1 2VDCinput. The input to
U3 is filtered by C6 and the outputis filtered by C17.
(7) PowerMonitor
U2 monitors 3 separate voltage levels. Each voltage to be monitored is scaled to 2.5V and
applied to U2, which compares the voltage with its own 2.5V reference. The allowable error
is set by applying a fixed voltage (2.5VDC)to the lower thresholdinput of U2. This voltage,
determined by R7 and R8, sets the fault window at *lo%. If any of the inputs fall short
of this level, then the /UNDERVOLTAGE (/UV) FAULToutput of U2 goes low and appliesa
reset signal to the CPU reset circuit.
U4 outputs an AC FAIL signal to the 429 controllerboard in the eventof a momentary power
loss. When the voltage acrossC1 drops to approximately 120V, VR2stops conducting. The
infrared LED internal to U4 stops emitting, theinternal transistor stops conducting, and the
voltage at U4-5 is pulled up to +5VDC through R13. This voltage is output as AC FAIL to
the 429 controller board. D l limits the currentthrough U4 to 2 mA.
(8) CPUReset
At power on, C12 chargesin 8-10 milliseconds to trip U5-4 high. If an undervoltage con-
dition occurs, the /UV FAULT pin of U2 goes low. This causes U5-4to golow, which is the
/RESET signal to the 429 controller board.

shown in Fig. 101. Adjust power supply for 115 ± 4VAC.
NOTE: The dash (-) number of the Acceptance Tester Software (ATS) part number rolls to
the next higher dash number whenever the ATS is changed. The current ATS part
number is 998-0415-008 or higher dash number. Subsequent receipt of an A TS disk
with a higher dash number (e.g., -009, etc.) indicates ATS change.
C. The ATS is provided on one diskette. The files on the disk can be copied to a directory on the
hard disk. A separate directory should be created for these files.
EXAMPLE: To name the directory "TESTER" in the root directory, type: md tester and press
ENTER. Insert the ATS program disk into a disk drive. Drive B is used for this
example. Type: copy b:*.* tester\*.* and press ENTER. If a drive other than B is
used, just substitute that drive letter for B. This installs all the files necessary to
run the acceptance test.

Disassemble the unit only to the extent necessary for repair or replacement of parts. Note that
disassembly instructions are in the general or recommended sequence necessary to provide ac-
cess to the next lower assembly or item.
NOTE: Refer to TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING section to establish condition of unit or
most probable cause of its malfunction.
CAUTIONi: TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO UNIT, TURN OFF EXTERNAL POWER TO UNIT, AND RE-
MOVE IT FROM INSTALLATION RACK BEFORE DISASSEMBLING IT.
CAUTION: ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE SENSITIVE (ESDS) DEVICES ARE SUBJECT TO
DAMAGE BY EXCESSIVE LEVELS OF VOLTAGE. REFER TO DOD-HDBK-263 FOR
PROPER HANDLING.
2. General Techniques
A. Label assemblies, subassemblies, parts, and electrical leads to be removed. Note placement
angle and polarity before removal.
CAUTION: USE MINIMUM HEAT AND A HEAT SINK WHEN DESOLDERING PARTS TO
PREVENT DAMAGE TO PARTS AND PRINTED WIRING BOARD.
WARNING: CUTTING AND SCRAPING CONFORMAL COATING MAY CAUSE AIR-
BORNE PARTICLES TO ENTER THE EYES. WEAR GOGGLES TO PRO-
TECT EYES.
B. Remove conformal coating from rework areas with a chisel-tip soldering iron, or by carefully
cutting and scraping in conjunction with either of these procedures:
(1) Oven-heat the assembly to 1600 F to soften the coating.
(2) Remove conformal coating in conjunction with part removal by a vacuum-solder remov-
al device, provided that surrounding encapsulant does not exhibit any evidence of
scorching or burning.
C. Remove parts with clinched leads by clipping the leads as close as possible to the board
surface on the component side, then desoldering and removing the lead remnants from the
circuit side.
D. Screws that were installed with adhesive can be loosened by applying heat from soldering
iron to screw head.
3. Portable Data Loader Pre SB 7 (IPL Fig. 1. Sheet 1)
A. Identification label (5) may be removed with a thin-bladed tool, or new label may be installed
over old label.
B. Unwrap cables (10, 15) from Cover Assembly (20).
C. Lift clip (172) on Panel Assembly and slide strap (35) from under clip. If clip is damaged, drill
out rivets (173) and replace.
D. To disassemble Cover Assembly:
(1) To remove plate (25) or hooks (40), drill out rivets (30, 45). Do not enlarge 0.100-inch
diameter holes by more than 0.003 inch of original diameter.
(2) Remove strap (35) from plate (25).
E. Remove operating instructions label (55) from disk storage cavity.
