UNDERSTAND
TOPIC: Operational terminology/ definition of Elevations and Sections

Sections

a. Section represents a vertical plane cut through the object. It is a type of drawing which shows
the interior or inside of a building or structure.
b. Eave is the lower portion of a roof which extends beyond the wall.
c. Elevations are the exterior views of the building. It is a view of a building seen from one side,
a flat representation of one façade. It is a horizontal orthographic projection of a building on to
a vertical plane, the vertical plane normally being parallel to one side of the building. The front
view of the building is always referred to as front. The other elevations are named according to
their position in relation to the front, i.e. right elevation, rear or back elevation, and left
elevation. The Interior elevations show the inside of a building while Elevations are the exterior
views of a building.
d. Pitch is applied to the amount of roof slope. It is found by dividing the heights of the span.
e. Sectional elevation is a combination of a cross section, with elevations of other parts of the
building seen beyond the section plane.
f. Cross Section is a type of section where the cutting-plane line is drawn horizontally.
g. Longitudinal section is a type section where the cutting-plane is drawn vertically.
h. Cutting plane line is a heavy line which shows the exact location where the plan is cut.
i. Landscape is a section or expanse of rural scenery, usually extensive that can be seen from a
single viewpoint or a picture representing natural inland or coastal scenery.

j. Perspective (from Latin Perspicere means to see through) in the graphic arts, such as drawing.
It is an approximate representation on a flat surface (such as paper) of an image as it is seen by
the eye.
