Drone Project (NCS)

The project report outlines the design and development of drones, focusing on indigenous design modifications for a school trade fair. It discusses the scientific principles involved, materials used, and detailed procedures for constructing both a matchbox drone and an AI drone. The report also includes references for further learning and community engagement in drone technology.

AERIAL ROBOTICS: Mapping the future with Drones

I. Nature of work: indigenous design to a problem

II. Rationale:
when we were making a drone for our school trade fair, we realised that we can make
our own drone with some modifications.

III. Scientific Principle(s)/ Concepts:

• Aerodynamics: how weight and shape also external forces like thrust,
weight, air resistance, etc affect the flight of the drone.

• Materials Science: Usage of lightweight materials increases the

performance of the drone’s flight.

• Electronics and Battery Technology: Knowledge of circuits,

microcontrollers and batteries for power management.

• Computer Science and Robotics: Programming for flight control systems

and data processing relies on algorithms and coding skills. Integrating motors and
for automated control and movement requires principles from robotics.

V. Materials Used:

• For matchbox drone:

Matchsticks, toothpicks, matchbox, 4 mini propellers, 4 pencil motors, 3.7V
batter, main board connected with remote controller

• For drone
1. Frame:

o Material: MDF(medium density fibreboard) wood

o Size: 22 x 22 x 10 cm

2. Motors:

o Type: small RC motors (4 for a quadcopter).

3. Propellers:
o Size: 5-6 cm

Direction: 2 clockwise (CW) and 2 counterclockwise (CCW).

4. Battery:

Type: small LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery.

5. Power Distribution Board

Circuit

6. Transmitter and Receiver

7. Sensors for Data Collection:

Camera: For video recording.

8. Data Logger: Example: SD card module for storing data.

VI. Procedure/ Description:

FOR MATCHBOX DRONE

1. Take a large matchbox cut along one of the length.

2. Stick 3 faces of outer box with base box assuring one side open.
3. Make small holes (8) at the edges keeping 0.5 cm distance.
4. Insert 8 toothpicks in each hole.
5. Take hollow pen and cut it into 4 small pieces and insert pencil motors into it and
add propellers.
6. Place the main board and battery inside the matchbox and connect the wires of
the pencil motors to the main board.

FOR AI DRONE (work in progress) Step

1: Build the Frame

Assemble the Frame: Attach the arms to the main body
2:Install the Motors:
oSecure the motors to the arms, ensuring two motors rotate
clockwise (CW) and two counterclockwise (CCW).
3. Mount Propellers:
oAttach propellers to the motors, matching the direction
(CW and CCW).
Step 2: Install the Electronics
1. Mount the circuit
2. Install the Receiver:
o Connect the receiver to the circuit
3. Install Camera:
o Mount the camera to the front or underside of the
frame.
o Connect it to a data logger or transmitter if
realtime video is required.
Step 3: Wiring and Power Distribution
1. Install Battery in remote
